I have heard that when you play you are supposed to tighten so a regular pencil or your pinky can fit through the centermost gap. Is this reasonable?
Also, how loose are you supposed to keep it when you put it away?
thanks. youre right. i dont have a private teacher but Ive been playing for 7 years. its just that ive been told my bows starting to warp. so it doesnt matter how loose when i put it away?
yes, that about how tight you want it. just make sure its not 2 tight, its bad for the bow, and 2 loose will just make you sound sloppy and the bow will not play well. when you put

Full-size 4/4 Pernambuco Nickel/silver Mounted Violin Bow
Musical Instruments (VIO-MUSIC)
List Price: $289.00
Would reccomend this bow to others.
I bought his bow a few days ago and it arrived within two days!! It is a pernambuco bow and I can visibly hear a difference in the tone that it makes vs my Brazilian wood bow! This bow resonates more and has a very warm tone to it. My violin teacher also said the same when I show her the bow in our lesson and she played with it. She will be recommending this to her students and so do I. It a very good bow for its price, I dont' think you can find another pernambuco bow at this price. Most of them on the market are close to a hundred if not more. The bow was not warped and is in very good condition, brand new. This bow is lighter than my brazilian wood bow and I love the warmth of the tone it makes! 5/5 Tzu H. Hsiao (VA USA) - See all my reviews, July 18, 2010Definitely recommend!
I ordered this bow for my son as a replacement, rather than having his current bow re-haired since the price was so reasonable. I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of this bow, in fact I am planning on ordering another as a back-up for myself! The weight feels balanced, and once rosined up, it produces a fine sound. I paid $300 for my current bow from a knowledgeable violinist (I am a 3-yr. adult violin student), and consider this bow comparable in every way. 5/5 Lisa K. Neitzel "music lover" (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews, September 4, 2011Great product, great price
Super deal on this bow! I'm not a musician and my son plays beginner level so I wasn't looking for something extraordinary. Cheap, plastic bows went for the same price at music stores. Palatino Brazilwood Violin Bow 4/4 Size
Musical Instruments (The Music Link (AXL))
List Price: $29.99
decent beginner bow
This is a decent, straight beginner bow. I'm actually surprised at how good it is (I haven't shopped for cheap bows in 15 years, though, and the importers have gotten much better at the quality of instruments they're selling in the US in the past decade). I don't play well enough to have much of a feel for weight or other quality issues, but I know I've seen much worse ones in the past coming out of China etc, and this bow is lighter and better balanced than a comparably priced fiberglass clunker. For $20, I'm quite pleased! 5/5 Maria Alovert (pittsboro NC) - See all my reviews, March 3, 2011Works great
I had been playing with a bow that was my grandfather's and needed a replacement. Since I'm a fairly new player, I decided not to put a lot of money into a new bow. This bow place wonderfully! I highly recommend it for anyone. 5/5 K. Kunkle - See all my reviews, April 13, 2011Awsome Value
A perfect student bow. Frog works great, hair holds rosin nicely, bow has good balance. What more could you ask for at this price? Stop using your warped, decrepit student bows now! 5/5 Eric R. Nelson (Sandy, UT) - See all my reviews, July 13, 2011

Saga LB-12 Full Size Brazilwood Violin Bow
Musical Instruments (Saga Musical Instruments)
List Price: $25.50
Good beginner's bow
I'm just a beginning fiddler, so I didn't want to invest too much in a bow. I know the choice of bow can make a big difference to a pro, but at my level anything that works is good enough. So I can't really say exactly how good this one is; I'm not the one to test a bow; but it seems to look and function fine. I'm sometimes reluctant to go with the cheapest available, but have not been disappointed in my choice this time. 5/5 Peaceful Okie (Norman, OK USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) After going into several music stores and finding ugly fiberglass bows with plastic frogs for sale for $50 or more, it was an extreme pleasure for me to find this bow on Amazon. It arrived in perfect condition. It was just as nice as any other bow I purchased for $100 20 years ago when I was a student. I recommend this to any beginning violinist (like my daughter, who really likes the bow) or as a second bow to any experienced violinist. My friend who is a professional violinist was impressed with the quality of this bow considering the cost, and she is recommending it to her students. 5/5 Stephanie Polster "Stephanie" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Musical Instruments (4/4 FULL SIZE QUALITY WOOD / HORSE HAIR VIOLIN BOW)
List Price: $24.95
A violin bow for 1/3 the cost of a rehair job
I teach in a program that uses donated instruments for students who have not yet purchased a violin and was in need of bows for a couple fiddles. I looked at these somewhat skeptically because of the price but then went ahead and got a couple. These are amazing for the purchase price. They don't have a cheap feel to them and they work well. Probably you would need a better bow to perfect your flying spicatto, but for getting kids started and interested before parents have to shell out $$ they work great. The five stars are based on reasonable expectations for a very inexpensive bow. 5/5 Carolyn Osborne "co" (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2010Wood/Horse hair Violin Bow

I got this bow about a month ago, and its a decent bow. It seemed to take me 10 times as much rosin as should have for it to play for some reason, could have been something with the hair... but other than that, it's been working good. The sound quality definitely depends on the quality of your instruments, so if your looking for high quality, buy a high quality bow. If you just want music of good enough quality for everything else, this pr\well for me. I purchased this, and one other budget friendly bow on amazon. I like them both, they were both lightweight, nicely balanced, and came in excellent condition.I had a fiberglass bow that came with my violin and that thing is heavy and I don't like the balance point. I also need to crank the tension on it quite a bit, whereas the two wood bows I just purchased I only need to tighten about half as much as the fiberglass. They sound fairly close to each other. That said, I'm a beginner and I'm still learning, but this particular bow, out of the 3 I now own, is my favorite so far. The balance point seems to be the best for my hands and it fits comfortably in the proper playing position without my feeling like I need to move my thumb or pinky too much. I'm able to control this bow better on the strings. The other two have less control, especially the fiberglass. Because it's so heavy and it doesn't like my hand, it goes all over the place. Super Sensitive Light Violin Rosin
Musical Instruments (U.S. Band & Orchestra Supplies Inc.)
List Price: $4.40
For Beginners Only
Super Sensitive Violin Rosin Light is as cheap as they come, to put it lightly. When one rents a violin or a viola from a music store, this is typically the rosin they'll give you with your case. Why? It's affordable. As a more experienced violinist, I'm quick to disparage the use of this rosin. It is low quality, and the bare minimum of what rosin should accomplish. Rosin is an important aspect of playing the violin, as different quality rosins will alter the sound and ease of play. That being said, however, if you are looking to buy rosin for your beginning violinist, there's no harm in beginning with this rosin. I spent my first two years as a violinist with it. When one can only play twinkle twinkle in a slightly off register, it's more important to worry about firmly grasping the basics of violin technique than the quality of ones rosin.Additionally, if we're talking about children, whose to say whether they will stick with the violin for very... 3/5 brandon (green bay, wi, usa) - See all my reviews This review is from: Super Sensitive Light Violin Rosin (Electronics) Super Sensitive Violin Rosin Light is as cheap as they come, to put it lightly. I am a complete newby when it comes to the violin. I purchased a violin online on a whim, that because it was so inexpensive if I give up well, at least I have something pretty to look at. With that in mind, my cheap violin came with even cheaper worthless rosin. It was hard as a rock, and I had to score the crap out of it just to get dust to go on my bow, and it would play for just a few strokes, then I had to vigorously reapply. I found this rosin at a music store and bought it. One easy application and I was FINALY making real violin noises. So for a newby that doesn't know all the details yet, this saved me. If it weren't for this rosin I might have just completely given up. I definately recommend to anybody who is a beginer. 5/5 A. Nelson (utah) - See all my reviews, March 30, 2007Works very well
I am a beginner violinist and I recently bought my first violin. The rosin that was included with my violin purchase is of very poor quality. Thankfully, I had decided to order this rosin from amazon also as a precaution. It works much better than what was shipped with my violin and not much has to be applied in order for the bow to grasp the strings. It's also very inexpensive. You really can't beat the price. I'm sure it's probably worthwhile to purchase an even higher grade rosin if you're an advanced violinist, but for anyone at the beginner or intermediate stage, this will work very well. 5/5 Jesse - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Glasser fiberglass violin bow
I bought this for my son who is just starting to learn violin. He had a similar one when we rented the violin but had recently purchase a new violin. He likes this bow a lot since it is familiar to him and it is brand new. I think the sound achieved using this bow was superior to the older one and I am very happy with the purchase. 4/5 peter lau - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I have previously owned two of these bows, and they're great backup bows with a nice light, nimble feel, which is great for fiddling. My only gripe with them has been the artificial hair, which is a bit slippery and not as grippy as good horsehair. When I saw these advertised as having horsehair, I thought I'd give it a try.My first bow arrived horribly packaged, with absolutely no padding or support and shipped in a flat package. Needless to say, it arrived in two pieces. I immediately returned it and Amazon had a replacement on the way the very next day and I had it two days later, so kudos to Amazon for quick, no-hassle return service. After receiving the second bow just three days after the first, I was a bit disappointed to discover that my bow had artificial hair, and was not the real horsehair as advertised. However, for the price I can't complain, as it's a good bow with great handling characteristics.Since these reviews are about customer... 3/5 K. Harriger "K.R. AB-100 A. Breton Violin Bow
Musical Instruments (Saga Musical Instruments)
List Price: $13.95
pretty good bow for this price
The bow is pretty good considering it's price. It's a little mishapen, and it was hard to turn at first, but i fixed it in a second. It plays well, and is pretty light to handle. Rosin can go on it easily, and it wasn't scratched in any way. It arrived on time, and in a plastic cover, inside some paper, inside a cardboard box. Perfect for a novice. 4/5 Yanni Thai - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: AB-100 A. Well, you will get what you pay for with this one. While I have yet to get this home and try it out, I can safely say that this is a very cheaply made product. The frog was a poor fit and needed adjustment before you could easily tighten the bow. The hairs are poorly seated in the frog, wrapping to vertically up the side of the ferrule. The wire wrapping above the pad came loose just removing the tape (I thought it was there to protect the wire, not hold it down).I'm no concert violinist, heck, if there's a level below lousy amateur, I'm there. I was always last chair in high school, but even I know poor workmanship when I see it. Honestly, this was meant to replace a 25 year old beginner bow in desperate need of a luthier, but I don't know if it does that. While I'll never be able to tell you if this plays well or not (I'll be happy enough if I can make it play), my recommendation is to spend a few extra bucks, get something nicer. 1/5 af7v (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I'm a beginner so can't compare this bow to any but the one that came with my student violin. While this bow looks and feels okay to me, the hair is attached unevenly. That is, some is looser, some is tighter. Also the hair started falling out as soon as I took it out of the package. I've applied a lot of rosin and still can't get a decent sound out of it. I'll be replacing this bow very soon and I'll spend more next time. 2/5 Elizabeth Woods (Vallejo, CA United States) - See all my reviews, January 17, 2012

Saga LB-20 Full Size Carbon Graphite Violin Bow
Musical Instruments (Saga Musical Instruments)
List Price: $109.95
Nice bow, nice price
I got this as a replacement for the rather flimsy bow that came with my fiddle. It feels and sounds great! It also holds the rosin well. It doesn't have the "dead spots" I noticed on my previous bow, and long notes are easy now. 5/5 Matvei - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I have been playing fiddle style for 10 years now. When I picked up a new fiddle off of eBay the bow that came with it was twisted and a little too heavy for me. I purchased this bow and am very pleased with its light weight and quick response. I would recommend for any beginning or intermediate player that wants a carbon graphite bow that won't break the bank. 4/5 Michael Machado (Redlands CA) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2012Great Beginner Setup Replacement Bow.
I am a beginner violinist, and I bought a beginner violin setup because frankly that's all I could afford. The bow that came with the violin is pretty much as basic as the violin, but the main difference between the basic bow I got with my violin and the composite bow I bought on Amazon is how it handles with regard to bounce and tone. This bow is an awesome find considering the cost and the fact that composite bows, so I am told, outperformed the standard fiber glass bows most people get with their beginner violin. This bow does sound so much better than the bow I originally had, it's also much more comfortable, and much more controllable. If you want to just bump up your performance of your beginner violin this bow is well worth the price and effort involved in ordering.PS. My violin instructor notes that it's sort of sparkly oppose to jet black as the picture suggest. It's not a negative, just wanted to call it out. 5/5 T.
