4chan Users Crash MPAA Website in Pro-Piracy Protest

  • Sep 18, 2010 from mashable(Mashable) in *
mashable The 4chan user group Anonymous executed attacks this morning that crashed the websites run by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Indian tech firm Aiplex Software. The attacks were made in response to anti-piracy measures taken by both organizations.4chan users (particularly Anonymous) have been responsible for several attacks against other sites in the past, including Gawker, YouTube and Twitter. This time around, they used Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which overwhelm websites with a flurry of requests that would be harmless if they were coming in reasonable numbers or from just one source. The attacks were made by at least hundreds (and possibly thousands) or users at once, most of them using a simple application called Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) if that doesnt tell you how geeky this crowd is, were not sure what will.Aiplex was the first target. The managing director admitted a couple of weeks ago that the company uses DDoS attacks of its own on piracy websites such as BitTorrent search engines and trackers when they dont comply with takedown notices from content owners. Aiplexs website went down almost immediately after Anonymous began its attacks, so a new, more ambitious target was selected: the MPAA. That too fell to the wrath of the web forum geeks.Internet piracy, particularly that conducted over the BitTorrent protocol on sites like The Pirate Bay, has been an issue of concern for the MPAA, the RIAA and other organizations for years now, but while theyve won small victories along the way, they obviously havent quelled the rebellion just yet.Image courtesy of iStockphoto, Zeffss1Reviews: Internet, Twitter, YouTube, iStockphotoMore About: 4chan, aiplex, anon, anonymous, attack, bittorrent, ddos, distributed denial of service, Film, hack, motion picture association of america, mpaa, piracyFor more Entertainment coverage:Follow Mashable Entertainment on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Entertainment channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

Great for the price ***Useful tips for if you do purchase it***

Like so many others who purchased this, I did so because I have no experience with any musical instruments, but have always been fascinated by the sound of violins. I was very nervous considering some of the reviews, as well as some of the seller feedback. But I tell you what, I am very pleased with my purchase.A few points:Since it is such a well priced instrument it would be great if this seller realized a lot of the purchasers would be very inexperienced users. A small set of instructions would have been very helpful. I.e putting the bridge in, care and maintence, rosining the bow, storage, etc.All and all, when I recieved it, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. It is a beautiful violin. I did too also note the neck is not stained on the back, but that is not a big deal. My co-worker who is a professional violinist said considering what I paid, and where I got it, it is actually a good instrument. My only gripe is there is a piece of paper... 4/5 A. Excellent Beginner's Violin, GREAT Service from this store

I bought this violin for my nephew as a beginner's violin and was quite pleased with the value for the price, and it was an affordable way for him to have his own instrument and not have to rent or use a second-hand one. My sister did not realize that it takes a while to "break in" a new violin, meaning strings sometimes break, you have to be careful tuning, etc. and when she thought the violin was "no good" I thought it was a case of having to break it in but also contacted the store to see what the return policy would be. They were so GREAT that myself as a musician would buy from them for me personally again, I have played many string instruments for over 30 years and was quite impressed with the response (return no problem). Overall the service was superb they shipped super fast, kept me informed via email and followed up on the initial "problem report" which turned out just fine as the violin "broke in" and is turning out quite nicely for my nephew. I have not encountered this... 5/5 Donna Pearlman (New London, CT USA) - See all my reviews, May 2, 2005

    Excellent Beginner's Instrument!

I purchased this violin about a month ago. As a beginning violin student, the previous violin I was playing on was a veritable piece of cardboard with four strings. I wasn't advanced enough for a very fancy violin, and I was tired of renting, so I went online to find a decent violin on a budget. I came across many violins on Amazon, but this one was within my price range and it looked good and came with accessories, like a case, strap, and rosin. I received it about 5 days after I ordered it. The violin looked really good. But it did not come with a bridge attached. I had to put the bridge on myself, which was not all that hard to do. I thought that I would ask my violin teacher to do it, but I managed to do it myself. I started to tune the violin and it seemed okay at first, but the next day when I went to play, the strings were all out of tune again. I had to retune it all over again. I started to get annoyed after doing this a few days in a row. I thought that I had... 5/5 S. Excellent for Adult Beginner!

Once I got my hands on this book, I discarded all the other "beginner" books I'd purchased. No more having to play juvenile ditties like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.I'm an adult beginner violinist and Essential Elements 2000 for Strings with its accompanying CD & DVD has enabled me to teach myself how to play my violin while thoroughly enjoying the effort and without experiencing the boredom and humiliation of having to learn tunes better geared toward much younger students.I've only been playing since July and I'm already about to graduate to the second book in the series. The curriculum is interesting, playing along with the orchestra on the CD is exciting, and realizing how fast I'm progressing is a dream come true for this 54 year old beginner.I highly recommend this book as well as Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory Complete to anyone seriously interested in learning violin. 5/5 Suzanne Langlois "JOBeth" (Georgia) - See all my reviews, September 18, 2006

    Well thought out series.

"For a real violin study, go with Suzuki." While that might work for a child that is ages 3-4 in a one-on-one or small group setting (which is what the Suzuki Method was intended for), it does not work well in large group learning situation for kids who are twice that age, beginning instruments in fourth and fifth grade. And to be honest, almost everything in the Suzuki method *IS* an arrangement of an original work (like the Bach Bouree from the cello suites set for violin), chosen because even in their simplified form they help teach the fundamental concepts. This is my third year using EE2000 in my school program. I usually have between 30-40 students at each grade level in the orchestra. The books and their accompanying CD/DVD work really well and are of the appropriate complexity for the students ages nine through eleven. As a private instructor myself, I recommend to all my students to seek outside instruction, but EE2000 provides a good balance of technical... 5/5 Gene Wie (Irvine, CA USA) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2007

    excellent violin method

This is an excellent first book for the violin. I have started learning violin again after a 24 year break! This book is aesthetic, has very clear instructions and diagrams and is designed beautifully. The progression of the exercises is completely logical, allowing you to perfect each technique before moving on. Every symbol is explained clearly, no new note or technique is found in exercises that come before their explanation. There are numerous scale and arpeggio exercises that are marked with a different background color, making it easier to find them. There are many orchestra arrangements (mostly duets), and even a duet with piano accompaniment. The accompanying discs are an added attraction. I don't particularly make very much use of them, but they can make practicing more interesting for children who generally have less discipline. This is a much better series than The ABCs of Violin. 5/5 P. Meyer "music lover" (Israel) - See all my reviews, March 11, 2005

    Lighthearted, musical fun

Leila Josefowicz has shown us, through her previous recordings, that she can play all the "heavies" of the violin repertoire with the best of them. Now she's back, with a catchy, fun recording of jazzy American showpieces. Don't let the cover of the cd fool you into thinking this is a pop princess album, it's not. True, the pieces on here are not heavy, they're purely fun, but she still pulls them off with the same flair and panache as she does in her more serious albums. As Leila states in the liner notes, this album WILL bring a smile to your face! Go out and buy this recording--it's wonderful to listen to when your spirits need a lift. 5/5 Jeffrey Lehman (Market Harborough, UK) - See all my reviews, December 12, 2000

    Good clean fun.

I have enjoyed most of Leila Josefowicz's recordings very much, but this is my favorite. The songs are mostly in a style more or less like rag-time, and they are a lot of fun besides being impressive. The most amazing piece on this disc is the delightful Yankee Doodle Variations by Vieuxtemps. A fun and virtuosic set of, you guessed right, variations on the song Yankee Doodle. Her perfomence on this piece in particular makes it worth the cost of the entire disc.Ms. Josefowicz's technique is flawless and her tone is gorgeous. The accompaniment equally good, and the recording quality leaves little to be desired. 5/5 Howard Brown (Salt Lake City, UT USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Americana (Audio CD) Ms. Josefowicz has created an amazing recording. Her style is incredibly spirited and one can tell she is having great fun with the music. These are pieces familiar to many and yet her performance leaves one feeling they are hearing them for the first time. She is to be commended for producing and replicating the enthusiasm of the American musical tradition. The Gershwin pieces are masterpieces in their own right. Affordable Digital Recording. GREAT VALUE!!!

The other reviewers wrote some great info about this Microphone. Some drawbacks are the relatively bulkyness of this unit as compared to others. The sound quality is sufficiently clear when recording, but is not sensitive enough to satisfy the most demanding users such as musicians or professional reporters. As the other reviewers have said, you need a relatively loud source as there is no sensitivity switch or zoom feature. It does have the 90-120 degree switch, so you can toggle the range depending on what you are recording. This microphone is very compatible with many different devices. MD is the best though. Here's one MD player recorder that I know has the microphone jack and works great with this microphone:'Sony MZ-NF810CK Net MD MiniDisc Recorder with Car Kit'However, don't be fooled. Not every MD player has the appropriate Mic Jack. Double Check the technical documentation to make sure. Simple setup - excellent price point for recordings

I use the MS-MS907 microphone on a weekly basis. My main use of this microphone is to record lectures and it does a good job of it. Of course microphone placement is the key to a good recording but the MS907 provides a good pickup at this price point. It operates on a single AA battery and is highly efficient with energy consumption. Another feature I like about this microphone is that it provides two pickup pattern (90degrees for an individual speaker and 120degrees to accomodate a chorus).I would recommend investing in either a minidisc recorder or a MP3 recorder. 5/5 Rinaldi Wibowo (City by the Bay, California) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone (Electronics) I use the MS-MS907 microphone on a weekly basis. One of TV's best shows gets even better

Update (1/11/09): MAD MEN just won the Golden Globe for the second straight year for Best Drama. Well deserved.Frankly, I'm pretty despondent about the future of quality TV on the major four networks. The recent cancellation by ABC of the breathtakingly brilliant PUSHING DAISIES was the first major blow. When a show this great can get cancelled for weak (not genuinely bad, merely weak) ratings, you feel that something has gone wrong with commercial television. For one thing, TV history is resplendent with shows that started off weakly and then succeeded a couple of years into their run. THE X-FILES, SEINFELD, THE OFFICE, and 30 ROCK all started off with weak ratings, only to build an audience later. The second horrific piece of news undermining my confidence in commercial TV was NBC's announcement that starting next year Jay Leno will get FIVE HOURS (!) of prime time for a more politically oriented version of his talk show. First, why would we want Leno when we... 5/5 Robert Moore (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2009

    Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)

The second season of this AMC series is in story/character sense a lot like the second season of Sopranos was for itself. This season spends it's thirteen episodes expanding upon what has already been established at the same time as it balances sudden new story devices and taking things to their next logical (or sometimes illiogical based on the character) extensions. I found it very enjoyable and while it may not be a full reflection of life in the sixies it truly shows the aspects that it aspires to quite well and shows flawed characters who are full of unfortunate parallels with people in the world today. This is a show that is telling a specific story while exploring specific character's in an attempt to disect certain issues within our world today. I look at this show as a reflection of recent times, the issue of never being happy with what you have and looking for happiness in the wrong places and feeling lost and unsure of your place in the world is something I see a... 5/5 Reconnecting To My Childhood "Time Won't Let ... - See all my reviews, March 9, 2009

    Great software but...

I love this software. I'm a pretty crappy guitarist who decided to go back to the basics and learn some music theory (which I'm doing via the "absolutely understand guitar" DVD set by Scotty West -- I recommend that product as well -- the presenter has a tendency to ramble and excessively repeat himself but ultimately the material is solid and a lot of things are starting to click so it was worth hanging in there). Anyway, this software is a perfect complement to your music theory studies. I think that unless you're just lucky to be born with a natural talent, you're going to need some dictation of intervals, chords, scales, and rhythm to atune your ear to how they sound. Playing it on your own instrument isn't as effective because you can't help using your eyes and fingers as a crutch. With this software, you have nothing but your ears to find the answer. Some small nits to pick, which I'm writing here hoping that emedia will read this and include in its next upgrade:... 5/5 demago (Singapore) - See all my reviews This review is from: EarMaster 5 (CD-ROM) I love this software. I bought this at the San Francisco Apple Store

I think it says something that Apple sells this music software at their San Francisco Apple store. That indicates EarMaster Pro has gone through some serious vetting, as Apple does not sell junk. Apple's shelf space for selling software is small. Except for those days when there isn't enough time or I'm too busy, I use the EarMaster Pro software every day for about a half hour. I've been using Ear Master Pro for about four months and am nearly half way through the exercises. EarMaster Pro has an online forum which has been helpful and responsive when I've had questions. In a good way, I have found the EarMaster Pro exercises beyond the starting "easy" ones to be brutally hard. I consider EarMaster Pro to be a program for music majors or for serious musical hobbyists such as myself who are highly motivated and have a strong background in musical harmony and musical theory. Flexible, wide ranging exercises and excellent support

I originally posted this review for EarMaster and not EarMaster Pro. I have the Pro version so I am adding the same review here.I like the flexibility of this training software -- the ability to create my own exercises. I use the Tutor to narrow down issues and then construct my own exercises to further focus drills. Of the software I tried this one also has a fairly complete results report. I think this is important because it allows you to overcome your own sense of where weaknesses are when your own sense is incorrect. The only issue I've found is with some of the rhythm drills that depend on the platform on which the software is running to be properly responsive. I find the responsiveness too unpredictable and therefor some of the drills like the rhythm imitation less useful. I do not think this is the fault of EM 5 or any other training software that tries to drill rhythmic input. It's more a platform issue.Another very positive thing about this... 5/5 L. Well this has to be about one of the best devices out there to strengthen your individual fingers. The `Gripmaster Finger Exerciser' is an excellent piece of equipment that can help a wide range of problems, as well as helping with finger strength in general. This is ergonomically designed so it fits into your hand easily and I have found it doesn't slip or move around, like cheaper copies I have seen. This uses springs for tension and comes in a range of different strengths. I recommend you start off light and build up, I went for the red (medium) grip at first and although it is useable, it was hard work. This comes with a small booklet describing various exercises you can do and after using this for just a few minutes each day you will quickly see results. This is great for accident rehabilitation, climbers, musicians and a whole other range of activities where finger strength is a must. If you like this I also highly recommend a Powerball which is fantastic for wrist and forearm strength and which is addictive to use. All in all, this is a simple but effective piece of exercise... 5/5 Spider Monkey (UK) - See all my reviews This review is from: Gripmaster Hand Exerciser Red, Medium Tension (7-Pounds per Finger) (Sports) The `Gripmaster Finger Exerciser' is an excellent piece of equipment that can help a wide range of problems, as well as helping with finger strength in general. If you like this I also highly recommend a Powerball which is fantastic for wrist and forearm strength and which is addictive to use. All in all, this is a simple but effective piece of exercise... An Excellent Practice Tool

This my second Gripmaster. A set of Ruff Caps completes this to make a excellent practice tool for when you're away from your guitar for any length of time. The Gripmaster/Ruff Caps helps to build and maintain finger strength and callus'. I also have the heavy tension Gripmaster and alternate between tools. I've purchased the X-Light tensions grips for my son to build on. The other adjustable grips just don't do the job or stand up to heavy usage. It can go into your pocket and go anywhere with you. I use it at home and at work without any trouble. This is a very good tool for any beginner or seasoned guitar player. The only reson I didn't give a rating of five stars is you have to purchase the Ruff Caps seperately. 4/5 Working Nights "Working Dude" (South Florida) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Nice, but why is the glue so impossible to get off?

This pan is great, and I made a really nice cake for my husband with it -- used milk duds on toothpicks as the "keys" and combined dark and light chocolate frosting on the body, along with white frosting for the strings. It came out really cute. The only aggravating thing was that there was some glue that was used to hold down a piece of paper inside the bottom of the pan (that showed the guitar fully decorated, and had the barcode/etc). The glue was IMPOSSIBLE to get off. I even tried prying it off with a knife, heating it, etc. It's like cemented onto the pan. Luckily, (and I recommend this for anyone using this pan anyhow), I used parchment paper on the bottom of the pan, so the cake didn't actually end up touching the glue. I don't know if the glue was just really old, or if they used the wrong type of glue, but it was a nuisance. 4/5 M. Curnutt (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews, April 1, 2009

    Fun Pan

This is a great pan... It came with a few pictures of different guitar styles to decorate the cake in and the details were really picked up by the cake. It is not nonstick though so be sure to use grease and flower. Other than that though... great pan. I've make an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar. Everybody loved them. 4/5 Sandra Sovey "ktchn lvr" (SE Michigan) - See all my reviews, August 1, 2006

    Wilton Guitar Cake Pan

I bought this cake pan for my daughter's birthday. It worked out perfect. Make sure you read the instructions included with the pan so that the cake comes out right. My daughter loved the design. 5/5 Albert R. Garafola - See all my reviews, April 24, 2009
