This "toy" violin is a great beginning instrument for possible future violinist

I caught my three year old grandson pretending to play music by running a stick across another stick...as though he was playing a violin. Hmmmm I thought...just maybe??? I called our local Suzuki school and they suggested we wait until he was 4 yrs old to give him violin lessons. I saw the electronic toy violin and thought it would give him something a little better than two sticks to get a feel for a true instrument...and that it did. He is learning to properly hold the instrument (his mother played violin and I the viola, as children), and to properly run the bow across the bridge. The programmed tunes are very nice. I really like that the tunes are played based on the child running the bow over the bridge of the violin. The are no real strings, so there is no worry that a 3 yr old will break the strings. My grandson thinks that he is actually playing and making music. I think this little violin shld be a required toy for evry child who plans to take violin/viola lessons. My... 4/5 Laura A. Decent toy, poor customer service from company

I bought this toy for my 4 1/2 year old son who loves music and requested a violin from Santa for Christmas. Upon it's arrival, I was disappointed in how small it was and overall it just seemed a bit "chincy". I tried it out before wrapping it up and you do have to get the bow just right on the strings for the music to keep playing (it sort of cuts in and out). I decided it would be fun for him in spite of my impressions. He did really like it, and the smaller size was actually about right for him. The only problem was that it quit working within the first hour. We tried replacing the batteries and still nothing. I know it was played with gently so this was a big disappointment. There was no return/exchange info on the sales receipt and I have failed in getting a live person at the phone number listed. My messages left have gone totally unanswered. I fear I will have to file a claim with Amazon's A-Z guarantee department as this company (The Planet Shops) is quite lacking in their... 4/5 sportsmom (Fargo, N.D) - See all my reviews = Durability:, December 30, 2009

    "Real" toy violin

My 3 year old daughter who has autism was always fascinated with my violin and enjoyed drawing the bow and pluck the strings. Although there are no strings to pluck on this violin I was amazed at how authenitic it looked and the wonderful sound of the 4 classical music pieces that you could play by simply pushing a button. My most favorite aspect was the ability to draw the bow across what looked like strings which moved the apparatus back and forth and it would play the next note in the song if you held the bow in the position it would hold the note, so she really felt as if she was playing. Although she mostly likes to push the demo buttons to here the song without using the bow, she has enjoyed it as much as when she would want to pluck the strings on my violin. 4/5 R. Munchkin

The best baby toddler toy ever

This was purchased as a gift for my 1 yr old and became the immediate favorite of both my daughter and her 3 yr old brother. This is the first game that they can both play together. It keeps them occupied for hours, and the music, while clearly electronic, closely mimics the sound of real instruments and is not at all irritating- so we don't mind listening to it for hours. It is also exceptionally durable, having now been dropped, kicked, licked, and knocked out the car window. No cracks, no broken pieces, and still plays as well as it did the first day out of the box. 5/5 Erynn Petersen "ebp" (Tacoma, WA United States) - See all my reviews, February 22, 2001

    Fun music with fun play.

I am on my second child and this toy continues to be a favorite. The cube has six buttons. It will play one of six Mozart tunes. One button switches between the tunes while the others turn on and off specific instruments (piano, violin, harp, french horn, flute). The cube has rounded corners with durable rubber bumpers that make it both safe and durable. It is amazing how much abuse this toy can take.My oldest received the toy when she was 13 months and now nearly three years later she is still playing with it as is her younger brother.A little pricey, but very-well made. A toy that will last from one child to another. 5/5 Joshua Koppel (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews, July 1, 2003

Beware: This is not the original toy!

The MUNCHKIN Mozart Magic Cube is a poor-quality copy of the original EMBRYONICS Mozart Magic Cube.My guess is that Munchkin bought out the rights to this toy from the original manufacturer, which went out of business, then "redesigned" it more cheaply. While keeping the overall shape and function the same, they changed the outside colors, and the inner workings as well.My older son received an Embryonics version in 2004, and we all loved it dearly until its battery cover broke. My younger son received the Munchkin version as a replacement gift, and we have all been sorely disappointed. The sound quality is horrible--the Munchkin cube sounds squeaky, tinny, and ridiculous, especially compared to the Embryonics version (which wasn't perfect, but much, much better). You can still find the older Embryonics version online. It has all yellow sides, the buttons are printed with different colors, the edges and corners are all purple, and it has the name... 5/5 Morgan J. Scholten - See all my reviews, February 13, 2009

Classic Bernstein recordings of American music, in best sound

Sony's reissue machine tries to entice us to buy some classic Bernstein performances by giving us mid-price, excellent sound, and a jam-packed CD. As Mr. Richman notes below, the main part of this disc appeared in the Bernstein Century series, but two items have been added, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man and Ives' Unanswered Question, both performed with all of Bernstein's infectious energy and insight.I also give Sony the benefit of the doubt that their current DSD (Direct Stream Digital) technology is a step ahead of the last improvement, 20-bit SBM (Super Bit Mapping) technology. Who knows for sure?Anyway, Bernstein and Stern have never been bettered in their 1964 reading of the Barber Violin Concerto. Their secret is twofold: the superb orchestral playing by the NY Phil. at its height (Harold Gomberg's oboe solo that opens the slow movement couldn't be more tender), and Bernstein's unqiue ability to conduct American rhythms. He was both a jazz baby... 5/5 Santa Fe Listener (Santa Fe, NM USA) - See all my reviews, June 15, 2006

    Same as "Bernstein Century" Title

This recent Sony reissue of the music of American composers Samuel Barber and William Schuman is exactly the same as a CD featured in the "Bernstein Century" series. Included here are Leonard Bernstein and the NYPO's 1971 account of the "Adagio for Strings," 1964 recording of Barber's Violin Concerto, 1968 performance of Schuman's "To Thee Old Cause," and "In Praise of Shahn" from 1970. The music is terrific, but my reason for rewarding only four stars (other than being annoyed at Sony for investing so much energy in a straight reissue with new packaging when so many other classic recordings remain unissued) is this release is obviously aimed at casual fans looking for a good performance of the "Adagio." And boy will they be surprised by the dissonance of the Schuman pieces! This is another Sony reissue that leaves me scratching my head. 4/5 Michael B. Curiously "Romantic" and "Modern" all at once...

The Violin Conccerto by Samuel Barber is a very lovely and passionate piece of music that is curiously "Romantic" and "Modern" all at once. Though it seems to be based on the model of the Brahms concerto, it is also quite interesting on its own terms. Violinist Isaac Stern is in robust form as is conductor Leonard Bernstein who unlocks every morsel of flavor from the fantastic New York Philharmonic. The "Adagio for Strings" by Barber, has, of course, become a standard piece for mourning, and has also been used in several movies such as "Platoon". This illustrates what a fine and melodic composer Mr. Barber truly was.The pieces by William Schuman are OK, but lack Barber's fund of melody and passion."The Unanswered Question" by Charles Ives is a "bonus track" which is quite mysterious and ethereal.Aaron Copland's rousing "Fanfare for the Common Man" is another American Classic dedicated to the citizen soldiers who saved the world from... 5/5 Joe Anthony "Joe Anthony" (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Barber: Adagio for Strings; Violin Concerto / Schuman / Ives / Copland ~ Bernstein / Stern (Audio CD) The Violin Conccerto by Samuel Barber is a very lovely and passionate piece of music that is curiously "Romantic" and "Modern" all at once. Nothing special, just an average power adapter

Does exactly what the description says, however in the long run, it's just a very average AC power adapter that can be replaced by any 12V generic one. The cord is too short, I'd estimate around 5-6 feet, so you may have difficulty playing your piano if it isn't up against the wall. (Additionally, it will serve as a tripping hazard if your piano is positioned 3-4 feet away from the wall.) 3/5 Kevin Schanz (Norco, CA USA) - See all my reviews, March 2, 2009
