Solid overview of Paycheck's Epic years

It's a shame that Paycheck is mostly remembered for his temper, jail-stints, and the hell-raising 1977 hit, "Take This Job and Shove It." A shame, because there's a lot more to Paycheck, including two separate halves of a successful recording career that yielded a wealth of hard-lived honky-tonk and comeback mainstream country hits.Paycheck found his earliest success as a hard-core honky-tonker on the Little Darlin' label (anthologized on the Country Music Foundation's "The Real Mr. Heartbreak" CD). After splitting with the label's co-founder, and drinking away two years in California, Paycheck mounted a stunning comeback on Epic, spurred throughout the '70s by producer Billy Sherrill. It's these later sides, including hits like "She's All I Got" and "Someone to Give My Love To" that are anthologized here.Paycheck's career with Epic had two distinct phases. This is what country music is truly meant to be

This is country music at its finest. This isn't what is coming out of Nashville today. On this disc every man's emotion is laid bare from happiness, despair, humor to pathos. And, best of all, is the "Old Violin". You can't call yourself a collector of country music until this cd is in your collection. How proud you will be to display this gem! 5/5 Larry W. Best Compilation of Paycheck's Epic Years

Johnny Paycheck rarely gets mentioned with George Jones, Merle Haggard or Lefty Frizzell in Country History as one of the great, influential singers of all time. But he is, and Epic has finally given him a Compilation worth cheering. If it's just the charted hits you want buy, 16 Biggest Hits, which does a nice job. But this digs deeper. Albums cuts mixed with classics make for a better understanding of Paycheck's legacy. This also includes his last Country Top 40 hit, the self-penned "Old Violin" which was released on Mercury records in 1986. Up-to-date liner notes and good sound make this an essential purchase. If this whets your appetite, go for Paycheck's 60's sides which are perfectly captured on CMF's "The Real Mr. Heartache-The Little Darlin' Years". Someday, there'll be a compilation covering Paycheck's entire career. Until then, this CD and the CMF one are all you'll need to remember an unjustly ignored Country legend. 5/5 T. Great insight into the mind and craft of a luthier

Sam Zygmontowicz is one of the great contemporary violinmakers, and John Marchese has more than done him justice in describing the process of his making a violin (for the Emerson String Quartet's first violinist, Gene Drucker). In the process, Marchese takes us not only into Zyg's studio, but also to Cremona, the birthplace of the violin in its modern form (in the 1560s) and the home of the three greatest families of violinmakers--Amati, Stradivari, and Guarneri. In addition, Marchese reports on his meetings with Drucker, who commissioned the violin, and on Drucker's reaction to his new instrument--which complements the Strad on which he had been playing but cannot, in his opinion, fully replace it. 5/5 Richard Conviser (Missoula, MT) - See all my reviews, June 6, 2007

    Enjoyable and generally accurate

The author gets to the heart of violin making by studying the work of a modern master. The trip to Cremona is a nice feature of the book, along with the interview with the customer for whom the featured violin is being crafted. I'd love to see a documentary film that parallels this book, with Marchese directing. The references for further reading will help a reader who's inspired by Marchese's book to pursue the study of violin fact and violin mythology. 4/5 David Fowler (Lincoln, NE USA) - See all my reviews, April 1, 2007

From a father's point of view

My son, now 17 has been playing his Great-Great Grandfather's violin for 8 years. Though I love how he plays, he feels he needs a replacement. I didn't know much about violins, so... my first step was to read about it. I picked up John Marchese's book for many reasons, one of which was to get a feel for what we should be looking for with the replacement. I was thrilled at how the book was written, the information it contained and the "easy read" of it. It gives great credit to Sam Zygmuntowicz along with all of those who work to create the magical boxes. I enjoyed it and it definitely had influence on how we will proceed with my son's next violin. Thank You. 5/5 Ten Acre Woods LLC "Darryl Shann" (Escanaba, Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews, January 1, 2008

The best baby toddler toy ever

This was purchased as a gift for my 1 yr old and became the immediate favorite of both my daughter and her 3 yr old brother. This is the first game that they can both play together. It keeps them occupied for hours, and the music, while clearly electronic, closely mimics the sound of real instruments and is not at all irritating- so we don't mind listening to it for hours. It is also exceptionally durable, having now been dropped, kicked, licked, and knocked out the car window. No cracks, no broken pieces, and still plays as well as it did the first day out of the box. 5/5 Erynn Petersen "ebp" (Tacoma, WA United States) - See all my reviews, February 22, 2001

    Fun music with fun play.

I am on my second child and this toy continues to be a favorite. The cube has six buttons. It will play one of six Mozart tunes. One button switches between the tunes while the others turn on and off specific instruments (piano, violin, harp, french horn, flute). The cube has rounded corners with durable rubber bumpers that make it both safe and durable. It is amazing how much abuse this toy can take.My oldest received the toy when she was 13 months and now nearly three years later she is still playing with it as is her younger brother.A little pricey, but very-well made. A toy that will last from one child to another. 5/5 Joshua Koppel (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews, July 1, 2003

Beware: This is not the original toy!

The MUNCHKIN Mozart Magic Cube is a poor-quality copy of the original EMBRYONICS Mozart Magic Cube.My guess is that Munchkin bought out the rights to this toy from the original manufacturer, which went out of business, then "redesigned" it more cheaply. While keeping the overall shape and function the same, they changed the outside colors, and the inner workings as well.My older son received an Embryonics version in 2004, and we all loved it dearly until its battery cover broke. My younger son received the Munchkin version as a replacement gift, and we have all been sorely disappointed. The sound quality is horrible--the Munchkin cube sounds squeaky, tinny, and ridiculous, especially compared to the Embryonics version (which wasn't perfect, but much, much better). You can still find the older Embryonics version online. It has all yellow sides, the buttons are printed with different colors, the edges and corners are all purple, and it has the name... 5/5 Morgan J. Scholten - See all my reviews, February 13, 2009
