Digg Responds to User Outrage: Upcoming Stories Will Return

  • Aug 27, 2010 from readwriteweb(ReadWriteWeb) in Technology
readwriteweb Digg has had one heck of a week. On Wednesday the social news aggregator decided it was a good time to make the switch to version 4 of it's platform, which sent servers crashing and drove users bonkers. That was followed with overwhelming outrage over the buggy and feature-stripped new site, and today loyal Digg users spammed the site pleading for founder Kevin Rose to "do the right thing." This afternoon, Rose responded to the Digg community on his personal blog, announcing the return of features like "Upcoming Stores."
    Sponsor

    What's Changing?

The Upcoming section, as we noted yesterday, is where many of Digg's most loyal users spent time attempting to influence which stories would make the front page. Many complaints focused around the removal of this section, which Rose says accounts for less than half of a percent of site traffic. " I definitely see the fun behind wanting to see stories just before they jump, so we'll add a view of upcoming popular stories soon," he says.

Another change that angered many users was that the site defaulted to the new "My News" section, which is populated with stories submitted, commented on and dugg by a user's friends and contacts. This caused many long-time Digg users to accuse the site of "becoming too much like Facebook and Twitter." Rose says the default homepage will soon become toggleable between My News and Top News, stating simply, "Makes sense, we'll add this setting."

The social My News section has been the focus of the relaunch and Rose is probably disappointed Digg users weren't more accepting of the feature. While it certainly, "makes sense" to make the default homepage an interchangeable setting, it wasn't what the site wanted, or it would have included it from the start.

    What's NOT Changing

There are a few areas where Rose is refusing to bow to pressure from the site's users. Many were disappointed that the ability to "bury" stories was removed in the latest version, and argue it eliminates their ability to keep bad stories from the front pages of the site. Rose argues that "by removing the bury button we have put a stop to the bury brigades," and notes that users can report malicious content by clicking a "hide" button near each story.

Another change that has irked many users are the up- and down-voting buttons on comments, which were changed to arrows from their previous thumb versions. It's a minor change, but it means a lot in the Digg community, especially when arrows are used on many other sites, including the Reddit community.

Rose seemingly brushed this issue away, making a reference to the popular Old Spice advertisements. "Look at v3, now back again, the arrows are now diamonds!" Nope, they're still arrows. Personally I could care less if they're arrows or thumbs, but the community at large seems to care a great deal, so it seems like a no-brainer.

    Is It Enough?

There are still many lingering concerns for fans of Digg. While many contend that the new Digg plays into the hands of popular mainstream media outlets (the same outlets Digg was originally designed to circumvent), Rose says that all diggers are created equal.

But will these changes be enough to appease the Digg community. Early responses have been mixed, with a leaning toward positive, but time will tell whether the users choose to meet Rose in the middle. Let us know how you feel about the changes and the fixes to the new Digg by leaving us a comment below!

    Musical Instruments

    Rating (44 reviews):

This "toy" violin is a great beginning instrument for possible future violinist

I caught my three year old grandson pretending to play music by running a stick across another stick...as though he was playing a violin. Hmmmm I thought...just maybe??? I called our local Suzuki school and they suggested we wait until he was 4 yrs old to give him violin lessons. I saw the electronic toy violin and thought it would give him something a little better than two sticks to get a feel for a true instrument...and that it did. He is learning to properly hold the instrument (his mother played violin and I the viola, as children), and to properly run the bow across the bridge. The programmed tunes are very nice. I really like that the tunes are played based on the child running the bow over the bridge of the violin. The are no real strings, so there is no worry that a 3 yr old will break the strings. My grandson thinks that he is actually playing and making music. I think this little violin shld be a required toy for evry child who plans to take violin/viola lessons. My... 4/5 Laura A. Decent toy, poor customer service from company

I bought this toy for my 4 1/2 year old son who loves music and requested a violin from Santa for Christmas. Upon it's arrival, I was disappointed in how small it was and overall it just seemed a bit "chincy". I tried it out before wrapping it up and you do have to get the bow just right on the strings for the music to keep playing (it sort of cuts in and out). I decided it would be fun for him in spite of my impressions. He did really like it, and the smaller size was actually about right for him. The only problem was that it quit working within the first hour. We tried replacing the batteries and still nothing. I know it was played with gently so this was a big disappointment. There was no return/exchange info on the sales receipt and I have failed in getting a live person at the phone number listed. My messages left have gone totally unanswered. I fear I will have to file a claim with Amazon's A-Z guarantee department as this company (The Planet Shops) is quite lacking in their... 4/5 sportsmom (Fargo, N.D) - See all my reviews = Durability:, December 30, 2009

    "Real" toy violin

My 3 year old daughter who has autism was always fascinated with my violin and enjoyed drawing the bow and pluck the strings. Although there are no strings to pluck on this violin I was amazed at how authenitic it looked and the wonderful sound of the 4 classical music pieces that you could play by simply pushing a button. My most favorite aspect was the ability to draw the bow across what looked like strings which moved the apparatus back and forth and it would play the next note in the song if you held the bow in the position it would hold the note, so she really felt as if she was playing. Although she mostly likes to push the demo buttons to here the song without using the bow, she has enjoyed it as much as when she would want to pluck the strings on my violin. 4/5 R. Worth the check

The music on this cd is fun, its interesting, and its instructive. More than that, it is vital music for anyone who wants to understand the musical culture of this country in general, and the history of fiddling, the blues, jazz, and much much more. Black fiddling along with Black banjo playing were vital forces in black music across the scale from classical to delta blues. Now people are surpised there is sucha thing as black fiddling, or blues fiddling. Listen to this music. More than that, the music here is good to listen to. If you think you know the blues, you will recognize familiar names of Lonnie Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy. You get to hear both of them hear playing their first instrument, the fiddle! But all this music is a lot of fun In response to some comment, I have played bluegrass and old timey music for about 40 years, and also play guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle, the first two well enough to play with recording artists since around 1967. This is... 5/5 Tony Thomas (SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FL USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow! Phenomenal!

Well, I completely disagree with the negative review below, and I have a feeling that the gentleman who wrote it, who claims to be a mediocre picker of several instruments, will remain mediocre for his entire life. Fiddle and violin are not the same thing. As the old joke goes, the difference between the two is that you shouldn't spill beer on a violin. To expect rural and traditional black fiddlers from the Depression to play fiddle like classically trained modern fiddlers like Mark O'Connor or Allison Krauss is like expecting your country Grandma to make Hazelnut-crusted filet of Chilean Seabass with a Pomegranate and Wasabi reduction for Sunday dinner, instead of pot roast and mashed potatoes. It's an absurd expectation. This is the music of real people. Many of these musicians undoubtedly farmed or did other backbreaking labor all week, taking their only joy from the music they'd play on the weekend. Their faithful listeners were in the same boat... 5/5 Megan Romer (Lafayette, LA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow! Fabulous set of African-American fiddle music

Another astonishing album from the truly great, tiny independent Old Hat label... This features rare old recordings of fiddle music, some old-timey and some straight blues, made during the height of the Great Depression. There are a few familiar names, such as Peetie Wheatstraw and Peg Leg Howell, but for the most part this is pretty ultra-obscure material (even including one track of music by immigrants from Cape Verde (!) This is high-quality stuff, and comes with generously informative liner note... Highly recommended! 5/5 DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2001

Violin Christmas Ornament

violin, violins, fiddle, fiddles, violinist,
This holiday ornament presents a classical still life of an elegant old violin. This graceful instrument is essentially a hollow wooden box with rounded ends, two graceful f holes and a narrow center. The four sets of strings extend from a string holder at the bottom of the body over a raised bridge to the end of the narrow neck, or fingerboard where the four strings are inserted into a pegbox and are held there with pegs. The pegs are used to tune the violin. When the bow is drawn across the strings on the body of the violin it produces incredible, magical music! The gorgeous golden brown, almost orange tones are set off by graceful black velvet fabric.
