The Six Strings: Vintage John Juzek Violin

by Tom C

John Juzek was a good maker making instruments in many different grades and finishes. The earliest violin we have seen personally was dated 1901 in Prague. The Stradivarius and Guarneri models are the most frequently encountered. Most older vintage Juzek Violins made in Prague may bring an auction price of $350-$850 on eBay. A Juzek violin depending on age and wood used etc may make it worth in the $1,000's.

I have a John Juzek labelled Violinlaker in Prague with a signature that looks like it could be a printed signature, although I am unsure. The signature looks like it runs over the other printing and the bottom loop of the J in the last name runs off the label itself. Where these labels signed before being pasted it? It also reads Made in Chechoslovakia, a sure sign according to my other research that it was made after WWI. It is in fact not dated on the label at all. What are physical distinctions of Guarneri or Stradivari models? It is 23 inches long. I am not a violinist and I have used it only to create sound samples. But it is has a nice tone, although I find the volume of the highest string to be distractingly louder than the others. That could be of course because I have such terrible bowing technique. Any assistnce in making this provisional assessment of its value would be appreciated

I have a Juzek violin with label dated 1919. I took this violin to a violin shop for insurance appraisal. They said the all black labels were made by other violin makers employed by John Juzek and that his violin labels were multi colored. The label in my violin is multi colored. The violin is in excellent condition with one scratch on the back - original varnish intact - insurance value 5,000$. The tone of the violin is not superior to my other violins so it is doubtful it would actually sell for that price.

i have a john juzek violin also..givin from my grandmothers old friend back when she was in NYC. We had it polished and restored at the violin shop and the lady said she's never seen a violin quite like this one..its pegs are nailed instead of pegs that are just slipped on the instrument..it says violin maker formally in Prague.."made in Germany with the john juzek signature..idk how much its worth but by what the lady told me..the darn thing is so old shes never seen anything like it in her life.

Years John Juzek violinmaker from Prague lived?

Hi lived in the mid 1800 or a little later. His sons started the Metropolitan Musim of Music in New York, I can no longer read the handwriten date inside the violin, as a child I could read it mid to late 1940.

I have a violin made by John Juzek-the paper inside signed by him says made in 1924- no. 80. I live in West Tn. and cannot find any musical instrument appraisers. So, where do I go from here?

    Excellent Information for Violinists

Years ago, I once saw an old copy of this in a public library, and when I went back to borrow it, it had disappeared. Someone walked off with it! It contains good, practical advice for those serious about learning all they can about playing violin. This book is the second volume, and I'm still looking for the first volume. This is a rare book. 4/5 E. Collier (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews, June 1, 2008

    Works great but "non-transferable"

My wife decided that learning violin was something in her bucket list so we got her a cheap instrument off an online bulletin board. The instrument was in OK shape, except the pegs slipped horribly and she struggled because the violin kept falling out of tune. So that's where this product steps in. These pegs are geared down 4:1 so the tuning isn't "twitchy" and it's easy to get your pitch and keep it. As for installing these, you'll probably need to take this to a repair-shop; it is an involved process and it'd be easy to destroy your ax. Also be aware, that the pegs are literally glued into the peg box with epoxy. Once you've gone to planetary tuners you can never go back, period. But that's not an issue because the tuners work fantastically. Here's the exact instructions: Step 1-2 Reaming the peg hole with a 1:30 violin peg taper. Step 3-8 Cut the peg to the proper length. Step 9: Moisten the peg hole with... 5/5 Proaudio55110 (White Bear Lake, MN United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) very nice.

These pegs are a nice alternative to buying a tailpiece with built-in fine tuners. They will slip if you leave them "loose". Gear tension can be adjusted by gently pushing in to tighten or pulling out to loosen, much like friction pegs. I love how smooth they are. They make tuning a breeze! (make sure to get them professionally installed). 4/5 Benjamin Gauss - See all my reviews, April 20, 2010

    Whaddya mean "professional" and "glue"?

I found three different sets of planetary pegs for my 1959 German John Juzek; Grover, Wittner, and Knilling. After reading much discussion, and watching installation instructions on youtube, I decided to order the Perfections. A twelve minute video on Knilling pegs prompted me to order them. I ordered a "Juzek USA" 1:30 peg reamer for $38+$7 handling. During the week that I waited for the reamer I measured my pegs and their holes and realized that they were all in desperate need of reaming and shaping. The included installation instructions suggest glue. (I found another discussion which stated that even if they were glued in, they could subsequently be removed with a soldering gun.) The video says to simply carefully ream the holes so that the threads will have enough wood to grip, and after cutting and polishing the small ends, simply dampen the holes with H2O and a Q-tip and thread them in finger-tight. I have had to shove the pegs tightly to... 5/5 J. D.
