WEAVING MEDICAL NARRATIVE AND CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE, DR. MIMI GUARNERI EXPLORES THE FRONTIERS BEYOND THE PHYSICAL HEART.

Publisher: Touchstone Books

About this book
WEAVING MEDICAL NARRATIVE AND CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE, DR. MIMI GUARNERI EXPLORES THE FRONTIERS BEYOND THE PHYSICAL HEART. Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease -- one person every thirty-three seconds. Ten times more women die of heart disease than breast cancer. Despite remarkable interventional and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually. With groundbreaking new research, Dr. Guarneri skillfully blends the science and drama of the heart's unfolding. She reveals the heart as a multilayered, complex organ and explores the new science that indicates the heart acts as a powerhouse of its own, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities that are separate from the mind. When Dr. Guarneri was only eight, her vivacious forty-year-old mother died of a heart attack. To overcome the powerlessness she felt that night in Brooklyn when her mother was taken from her, she became a cardiologist -- healing her own heart by healing the hearts of her patients. Dr. Guarneri spent her early years as an overworked, sleep-deprived medical student, trained to view the heart as a simple mechanical pump. She came to realize through the lives of her patients, her own medical journeys, and breakthroughs in heart research that medicine is not just about stitching up patients and sending them on their way. The heart may be "broken" as much by loneliness and depression as high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure. The lessons of the heart are as much about forgiveness and gratefulness as they are about genetics and nutrition. And healing the heart can have much more to do with healing a mind and soul than we ever knew. From the racing heartbeats of cardiac emergencies to the gentle rhythms of healing touch, Dr. Guarneri draws us into the intimate moments of life and death. She leads us on a riveting exploration of the heart's mysteries, such as why heart transplant recipients may suddenly display unique characteristics of their donor or why someone who has normal coronary arteries may experience a heart attack. For it is only by knowing the whole heart -- the mental heart, affected by hostility, stress, and depression; the emotional heart, able to be crushed by loss; the intelligent heart, with a nervous system all its own; the spiritual heart, which yearns for a higher purpose; and the universal heart, which communicates with others -- that we can truly heal.

Seeing Beyond Metaphor to an Extraordinary New Vision of Health and Healing

The Laws of Health and Healing have been gradually evolving over the last century. Some treatments that worked well at times in the past seem less effective now, while some other methods are becoming more stable and more reproducible. As clinicians and individuals in all walks of life learn more about how to work with these transformations, they also learn about new ways of thinking. We have to move beyond simple dualities, such as ill/not ill, sick/healthy right/wrong; we have to learn that meaning and diseases of meaning are central to much of what ails us, and that it is difficult to maintain wellness without a sense of purpose. We also learn to move beyond a constant need for certainty and to understand the importance of metaphor in our lives.Dr. Guaneri's book is admirable for many reasons. She has embraced many of these principles, and one of the messages from her book is not just a plea to understand the whole person but also to understand metaphor. It is... 5/5 Dr. Richard G. A Personal Path to Healing

A physician that prescribes 'a small dog' for treatment, supports a patient's vision of angels at the bedside and embraces the 'laying on of hands' for healing, has my vote of confidence. Dr. Mimi Guarneri sensitively intertwines her personal path to healing with her patients' experiences in such a way that you instinctively start reflecting on your own life journey. And that is a wonderful gift this book offers everyone. I have often wondered how much damage my own life experiences have had on my personal health. You will enjoy the book, however, if you or a family member suffers from heart disease I highly recommend this easy read. I was left hopeful for a day when more physicians stop pushing pills and start having compassionate interactions with patients who have a unique story to tell. I am grateful my physician already does. 5/5 Jimolly (Coronado, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Heart Speaks: A Cardiologist Reveals the Secret Language of Healing (Hardcover) A physician that prescribes 'a small dog' for treatment, supports a patient's vision of angels at the bedside and embraces the 'laying on of hands' for healing, has my vote of confidence. wonderful book regarding Guarneri violins

I bought this book because there is a little in the Wikipedia regarding Guarneri violins. This book has two chapters dedicated to the best violin maker of this family - Guarneri Del Gesu, who is regarded as comparable to Antonio Stradivari. There are not only black and white photos of the violins of different periods, but also some good color photos of the famous Guarneri violins. The appendices contains dimensional information about the Guarneri violins made in different period. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Guarneri violins and the history of the violin. 5/5 Penny Johnson (California, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Violin-Makers of the Guarneri Family

This is a wonderful comprehensive book about the Guarneri violin-makers. Since I own two Guarneri-labeled violins and wanted to know whether either was made by that family, this book answered my questions. The fate of most genuine Guarneri violins is already known(they were destroyed by fire or other means or are owned by private individuals or are in museums). In the case of my two violins, there is a 'fictictious' label (as the authors describe and show in a photo), in both of my violins. That was disappointing to learn but it enabled me to buy a very nice-sounding violin at minimal cost (my second so-called 'Guarnerius') from the late 1770's even though it was apparently not made by the Guarneri family. If you own a violin with a Guarnerius label, it would be quite useful for you to own a copy of this book to determine its authenticity. The enormous and detailed research done by the Hill family makes this book well worth its reasonable price (at least at Amazon.com) where I... 5/5 Claudia (Central PA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Forget thinking outside the box

You wouldn't figure a movie that spends the entire 90 minutes stuck inside a coffin with just a single actor could be anything but boring, but thanks to a real revelation of a performance from Ryan Reynolds, Buried defies the odds. The premise is simple. A civilian truck driver in Iraq wakes up and finds himself buried alive. Because it's shot in real time, every suffocating minute he fights through, we also share in the agony. I must warn you that patience is required. The movie moves along at a decent pace and there is plenty of suspense, but we as the audience experience nothing other than what this unfortunate character is going through. This includes a couple of minutes along the way of staring at a black screen as his various lights go out. Don't worry too much though, because he has a zippo, flashlight, two glow sticks and the faint light from a cell phone to help us see what is going on. The phone also come in handy for dialogue purposes. Why does he have all of these things... 4/5 Monkdude (Hampton, Virginia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Buried (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) You wouldn't figure a movie that spends the entire 90 minutes stuck inside a coffin with just a single actor could be anything but boring, but thanks to a real revelation of a performance from Ryan Reynolds, Buried defies the odds. Up Close and Personal...

I bought this movie. I'm always looking for different ways of telling a story. This was excellent storytelling. Now I'm extremely claustrophobic. It's difficult getting me inside of an elevator. So everytime there was a shot of this enclosed space, I found myself hyper-ventilating. It's not shot in the 'first person' but still you have no one but the Paul Conroy character to identify with. You begin to see, feel, hear and experience his situation along with him. His sense of helplessness, growing fear and panic is yours as well. I am not a 'spoiler' so this review will be brief. Suffice it to say it was not a waste of money. Kept me enthralled and left me weary and weepy (is that a word?) to the end. Gave me a lot to think about and not easy to shake off. I highly recommend this movie to those who are looking for more entertaining, cerebral cinema viewing. A Great Quartet

This documentary, from the 1980s, is a peek into the world of chamber music and, specifically, the great Guarneri Quartet, whose sound one critic likened to "date nut bread and cream cheese." There's a lot of music here but also the process of four individuals who regularly left their families to play music all over the world for three decades. Dull

This is a dull old (1989) documentary. The film makers obviously didn't have any interesting idea to build the film around: it's all rather loose, wordy but unedifying, mouldering, totally lacking in incisiveness. On the positive side, there's a good amount of music here, so if you're a fan of this group, you will probably like the film somewhat, simply because of the opportunity to see the guys move around, say something, and play music. Another thing that I found annoying was that they were constantly out of tune. 3/5 Ghost(Ghost(M)) - See all my reviews This review is from: High Fidelity: Adventures of the Guarneri String Quartet (DVD) This is a dull old (1989) documentary. What It Means to be a Guarneri

Fans of the Guarneri Quartet will enjoy this chance to go behind the scenes for a glimpse into the world of this fine musical group. However, anyone who loves classical music and has even an inkling of the time, commitment and struggle involved in playing it well will appreciate this film as well. Rather than try to paint a cohesive and tidy picture of the Guarneri, director Allan Miller has wisely chosen to let them emerge as they are - four strong, highly opinionated individuals who are still in the process of evolving with the music they play. The overriding question of the film, of course, is how has the Guarneri managed to stay together for so long? Even the members themselves have no good answer to that one, but as the film follows each of them from home to rehearsals to airports and music halls, some recurring themes emerge. There is humor and passion, and the satisfaction standing before a wildly clapping audience. There is also something vibrant and challenging in the... 4/5 Jena Ball "Jena Ball" (North Carolina, United States) - See all my reviews, March 3, 2002

    A Relationship of High Fidelity

This film is fascinating on several levels. First, the viewer gets an inside look at a highly creative, extremely disciplined, classical music string quartet in rehearsal, in performance, traveling together, and at home with their families.Second, we learn a great deal about the internal dynamics of a `team' with a mission - quality performance of a very demanding musical genre that requires cooperation, dedication, discipline, and the total love of what one is doing.Third, we learn something about the nature of personal relationships, writ large, times four minimally, and more if one includes, as one must, the families of the musicians. We learn what relationships of High Fidelity require, their rewards, and their sometimes all too painful costs. Fascinating

The Guarneri's cellist has now retired - the quartet is in a new phase and I'm sure they'll continue to evolve, in spite of a recent savage review in Strad. They're one of our great quartets, and I recommend any of their recordings. It's a very interesting video and I recommend it, but if its really representative of their lives together, I pity these guys. They were together for 35+ years, and it appears to have been one long argument, due to communication mistakes that they just kept making over and over without ever trying something different, judging by the film. Without commenting on David Solley's musicianship, I think the other three might have been happier with another cellist, one closer to them in age, experience, and communication style. 3/5 M.
