    Great Violin for the Price

I just received this outfit today. Here are my first impressions:Looks: The violin has a nice antique finish. The sides and back are nicely flamed. It looks like it is a much more expensive unit. It seems to be built well - I don't have to worry about the back splitting in half at some point.Sound: The strings that come with are satisfactory, but I would recommend replacing them with some Dominants. The original strings sound good once you rosin the bow for about five minutes (see below), but they are still not very responsive. The violin holds its tune well.Accessories: This unit comes with two bows. The product description says they are real wood, but they sure do feel a lot like plastic. You really have to rosin them up forever before they will produce any sound. I would suggest buying a half decent bow for thirty bucks at the local music shop. I would also replace the rosin that comes with, as it seems to be a bit "dried out". The extra bridge... 5/5 MitsyPuppy - See all my reviews This review is from: Cecilio 4/4 CVN-500 Ebony Fitted Solid Wood Flamed Violin with Antique Finish (Electronics) I just received this outfit today. Cecelio cvn-500 3/4 violin

I purchased this violin for my daughter to start orchestra. My local music store showed me what to look for in a quality violin, like having the name inside the violin itself and a serial number which this one did. The satin finish is perfect for hiding finger prints. This violin is every bit just as nice as the $400.00 to $500.00 dollar violins I was looking at in the music store. It came with everything to get started including a chin rest and an extra bow. My daughter has played it in orchestra for about a month and no problems. 5/5 G. Good Violin for the Price

My first problem and I'm not sure if this is just only me but I broke a bridge the third time I tried to tune it and it wasn't that much pressure. Good thing it came with a extra one. I have had it for about 4 days and the G and D strings come out of tune when I tune A and E and I used peg drops. So I figured I would just buy a better bridge since they do look kinda cheap. When adjusting the G string it snapped so I put on the extra and it snapped. With not much pressure.Maybe I just have bad strings.I decided with the price of the violin maybe I should just check into better strings. This could be just a problem with the violin I have. From other reviews it sounds like it might be.If you are new to the violin I recommended getting the korg chromatic tuner and peg drops plus they are pretty cheap to find.Might not hurt to buy extra strings and a better bridge for when the two it comes with go out.It sounds great though for the price.I am just a starter to the... 4/5 0, April 10, 2008

I recommend this for kids of all ages!

This is a great activity for children of many ages. My 10 month old and my 2 year old both love it. Its great for a doctor's office or anytime that you're trying to distract the kids. However, the voice part of it doesnt work. It says the name of a different animal, then makes the noise of the animal you touched- confusing. But if you turn the voice part off & just listen to the sounds it works great! 4/5 kayte18 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Red Violin

A strangely hypnotic soundtrack that travels around the world musically with the movie it portrays. From the beginnings of Red Violin theme in Italy, to its ending in Montreal, the music takes us to each place it travels to. In Italy it is haunting as the Red Violin is created. In Austria the music is graceful (with a unique, lively gypsy tune), in Oxford it is passionate, in China wistful (included in the China section is a piece that has a Chinese song sung by children). At last, in Montreal, where the Red Violin ends its journey through time, the music returns to its roots in Italy, becoming both sad and haunting. The entire soundtrack centers around a single theme; expanding and elaborating it as the Red Violin journeys from one place to another. This is a soundtrack that evokes feelings of a mysterious love, a deep passion, and a haunting power. To truly understand the almost magical grip it has, one must listen to it. 5/5 Bram Janssen (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Red Violin: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD) Corigliano does not consider himself a film-music composer, not even after winning an Academy Award for this score, and tossing high eyes with his score for "Altered States". He is more the type for 'classical music' such as chamber music and concertos. That is perhaps one reason why he's asked to score such films of this calibre. In particular the tale of the cultural, literary and geographical travails of a small, melancholic fourstring. Corigliano's approach is awesome and at the same time the only right one. As the violin passes from culture to culture, the music changes with it. However, at the centre of each of the five 'chapters' is one theme: "Anna's theme". And seeing that - in a certain spiritual approach - Anna herself incorporates the violin, her theme is also the Red Violin's theme. This is beautifully illustrated in the soundtrack's first piece (properly named "Anna's theme") - which is first hummed by a woman's voice and then deftly handed over to solo violin... Great! But...go see the movie first

Any recording involving Joshua Bell almost guarantees that there will be little to criticize. Let me state, first off, that Bell's playing has nothing to do with why this didn't get five stars. As usual, he gives a wonderful performance, full of the lyricism and passion that make music critics smile in spite of themselves and young Bell fans swoon. The music itself is hauntingly beautiful and "Anna's Theme" is as unforgettable and captivating as her violin in the movie. The big BUT comes here: this is a wonderful score BUT it won't seem to make sense unless you go see the movie first. You have to know the plot; there are about five different subplots that fit together to make the movie as a whole. If you don't know it, the CD just sounds like five different soundtracks from seperate movies. At best, it will make you want to go find out what the movie is about. At worst, it will confuse you and you'll think the movie is weird and badly done, which it isn't. BTW I... 4/5 0, July 3, 1999

    Not Blue Ray Source

I purchased this Blue Ray partly on the existing review that gave it 5 stars. Artistically he is right. It is and amazing performence. The problem is that the source video is not done to todays standards. This concert was recorded in 2002. The blue ray seems to be a conversion from a lower definintion recording. Also the audio is not up to speed when compared to more recent recordings. It just isn't up to the quality of the following Blue Ray Concerts.1. Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, Achucarro, London Symphony2. Beethoven Piano Concertos, Barenboim, Staatskapelle Berlin3. Herbert von Karajan Memorial Concert, Ozawa, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Berliner PhilharmonikerI would definately recommend this recording. It is an amazing performance. However, I will only give it 4 stars due to the less than superior video and audio quality. 4/5 Kenneth J. Hakken "Ken" (FL USA) - See all my reviews, June 2, 2011

    Superb!

This is the best classical music video I have ever seen. It was one of those rare occasions where everything went right. These are the finest performances of these great and very familiar works that I've ever heard. Gil Shaham as absolutely amazing in the violin concerto, and Abbado and the orchestra are on top form throughout. The video direction is perfect, the picture is crystal-clear, and, most importantly, the sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a video recording. (Note: the brief travelogue about Palermo, included on the earlier 2005 DVD, is not included here.) This Blu-ray disc is a superb example of what the classical concert experience is all about. Bravo! 5/5 Lance Friedel (Warwick, RI USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011

Abbado's last performance with the Berlin orchestra.

The Berlin Phil is conducted by Italian Abbado in his last performance with them,at the opera house, Teatro Massimo in Palermo. The Egmont overture opens the concert, with speedy tempi. Gil Shaham plays the Brahms violin concerto with passion and at one with Abbado. However, Itzhak Perlman plays with feeling in the same concerto, conducted by Barenboim in a DVD. Being friends they have a great understanding with each other. There is nothing to choose between Perlman and Shaham.Except the sound is better in this blu ray. The symphony no 9, New world by Dvorak, will not disappoint. As an encore Abbado plays the Verdi overture Les Vepres Siciliennes. The orchestra plays with feeling in this bluray. 5/5 Ultrarunner - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Johann Sebastian Bach Poster

johann, sebastian, bach, poster, composers,
Johann Sebastian Bach “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and organist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. J. S. Bach began his musical career play the violin and the harpsichord under the instruction of his father Johann Ambrosius. Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected throughout Europe during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now regarded as the greatest composer of the Baroque, and as one of the greatest of all time. Bach, and many other composers of his time, were experts at improvisation, composing musical pieces at instantly, on the spot - similar to jazz players today. Unfortunately, because Bach improvised so much, most of his pieces were not contained on paper.
