    Tetrahedral: Isles of Akar

  • Oct 02, 2010 from franklymister(Jayson Elliot )
franklymister Sethwyne looked out into the ocean, at the sunrise. Shiveringknee deepin water, his right hand grips his spear all the more strongly. It was made from twisted wood from a land some to the east and tipped with the small iron point that hadcost him a month of tax equivalent. In his left he held a small sack seeping with the bleeding remains of fresh fish caught that morning.
The water parted quickly as Sethwyne headed into the abandoned island shallows. Around his legs he felt the kelp which would have been harvested had not been the reports. He stoped before the marker string, defining where the crops stop and where the water grows to deep to use in underwater farming. Now he could feel the cold morning water leaking down hismammalian skin water coats.Reflexively he tightened the various ties abound to hold his body heat.Slowly he opened the bleeding bag and emptied its contents into the water before him.
Within minutes Sethwyne sighted the single fin he was waiting for. Immediately he assessed its size and determined that he is dealing with a young. He sighed, knowing that this small kill means little in terms of honor. As the creaturedrewcloser Sethwyne readied his spear, aiming its point at the targets unseen mouth. Impact, Sethwyne stabed his weapon, despite the resistants of water, into the Sharuks mouth and up its soft upper mouth into its cranium. I would be happier with this kill, Sethwyne thought, if I wrist didnt have a tooth shoved into it.
Akar is plane of heroic knights, miserable shivering peasants, dangerous voyages, and the hope of a glorious reward. In this same world an adventurer can live his entire life knowing how to swim, yet still have it end in panicked drowning. For better or for worse, adventures take to the high sees: young warriors for glory, lame peasants for freedom, inspired holy men in their search for their god, or mages who wish to master the skills of water parting.
    The Narwhal Knights
Narwhal knights are the most brave and loyal warriors across the seas of Akar. Each and every knight serves on his lord with care, hoping that one day his lord will see him fit to become a vassal, and trust him with land. By tradition, once a narwhal knight has land, he can legally take a wife. Generally no knight is given charge of more then three islands full of peasants. With more a fair tactician could easily betray his lord and establish his own kingdom, using the ocean as a shield.
Due to the lack ofmetalloid material found around about the islands, narwhal knights rely on more abundant material. Large amounts of fur are layered about for armor, and most weapons are made of wood, which itself is still rather uncommon.
    The Peasant Life
Peasant individuals are rarely people of note, but in mass they are the social backbone of all the kingdoms(with the single exception of the great forest island to the far east). They provide the foodnecessary to feed themselves and their higher ups,as wells as pay for any war that might beoccurringat the time. In these times of great strife ships of war might actually be built and employed; peasants generally loathe the alternate work.

Seasons of growing on Akar aresimilarto most other worlds. Planting of young crops is carried out during the early spring, and harvest is completed in the late fall. These time constrictions are considered more so, as all farming is donehydrologically and planting must be done before the high watered late fall. Because of this most peasant work is done in cold water. tocounteractthis peasants were fur almost universally and work in hour long shifts.
Only the most hopeless peasants ever even consider becoming adventurers. Out of these few, only about half attempt to implement the new lifestyle. Out of that half, none have returned.
    Religion
In a world mostly dominated by oceanic activity, it only stands to reason that people worshippersonificationsof the sea. Of these many, only two have spread in dominance above the rest. These are the cults of Mantary and Whaley, and are female and male deities respectively.
Mantary, Mother of the Sea, Lordess of Calm, was described in Calr Frasai, the well know founder of church of Mantary, in the third volume of the epic titled Water.
She appeared before me glistening eyes like pearls
Hair fell like kelp upon her shoulders
All motion was muted about her
    Finsstretched down her appendages
Seemed to be dry on whilst she stood on the beach
It is saidthat Mantary mothered all peaceful life in the sea, as well as the merfolk, have a more flexible a disposition due to their human halves. Priests of Mantary are chaotic or neutral in nature and never evil.
Whaley, Lord of the Storms, Father of Sharuk, is perhaps the most speculated on deity on Akar. He has few followers, most of which are the violent outcasts of society. There is no defining doctrine imposed on followers of Whaley, which is precisely why Whaley has no lawful followers. He is random and violent, much like the ocean can be. More so...

Panasonic Unveils Handheld Hardware Focusing On Mobile MMO Gaming

  • Oct 05, 2010 from lorehound in Gaming
lorehound Panasonic has tried, and failed, to enter the video game sector before. Numerous parties have tried to destroy Nintendos hold on the handheld market, from Sony to Nokia to Bandai. No party with the exception of Sony has managed to stay around, let alone gain any ground. Panasonic is looking to avoid the failures of the past by creating a new market, true mobile MMO gaming.
Forget mobile applications. The Jungle hopes to relegate these small windows in to our MMOG worlds like WoW, Fallen Earth or Guild Wars 2, as pure rubbish. Panasonic will attempt to carve its own niche with The Jungle. The company believes that by developing a piece of hardware capable of playing todays browser-based MMO games it can create the mobile MMOG market.
Hit the jump for the full details.

The Jungle is a mobile device concept designed specifically for online gamers, that resembles a small laptop. The machine has a full QWERTY keyboard and touchpad, in addition to standard gaming equipment like shoulder buttons and a D-pad. 4G/3G and WiFi support werent mentioned, but will likely be a standard feature for a piece of hardware of this type.
The Flash teaser/reveal video (above) showed a micro USB port and headphone and cross-branding with the upcoming Battlestar Galactica MMORPG. Its rumored that the device will run a Linux OS, which means current MMOG will need to be ported to Linux to play. The thousands of browser-based games will reportedly run without issue.
Panasonic hasnt divulged the full juicy details or launch plans, but the company believes it has a winner. All we can say for now is that this mean little machine features a kick-ass display, touch pad, keyboard, and other gaming controls that well be saying more about soon, the company said.
Like the rest of the world, were intrigued, but cautious. Details on system specifications, such as wireless options, size, weight, battery life and screen resolution are non-existent. Panasonics last attempt in the video game industry was a total (expensive) failure. There is also no experienced person leading the charge as far as we know.
Yet, this is something I am highly interested in. What about the Lore Hound Pound? Are you up to do some mobile questing? What if and I wouldnt hold your breath here a Linux port of your favorite game actually happened?

Either in antique nickel or boysenberry color, it is very appealing and attractive. No other bag has integrated studs with metallic leather as perfect as this one. Its like a piece of art which is so delicate and exquisite that I am afraid I would destroy it. The enameled hardware gives the sophisticated satchel silhouette a glamorous dose of tough luxe. Finishing off the bag is the top leather handles with metallic leather loops. Whats more, besides the 6 1/2 top handles, it also has a detachable shoulder strap with 11 1/4 drop for shoulder-carrying or even cross the body.
From outside, this designer bag is nothing short of gorgeous. So is the inside. Open the top zipper and it reveals the large interior. Full of fabric lining, the interior features several pockets: one zip pocket, a cell phone and multifunction pocket, which are convenient for your tiny belongings. In addition, the whole size of the bag is 12 (L) x 11 (H) x 3 (W), providing large enough space to hold as much stuff as you wish. This bag will cost you $598.

    I'm baaaaack. You win!

G'morning, or good evenin', 'Gasmii! It's actually early afternoon for me as I start this, having spent all morning at the gym. I'm hurtin'. I did an hour of strength training, and then an hour of step aerobics. (I love step--I sweat my balls off, but who cares because it's so much FUN.) Then I ran for a bit on the treadmill, and THEN I tried the trick some of you were talking about last week, walking backwards on the treadmill. I did it super-slowly to start but on a wicked incline, and WOW. (I actually broke the treadmill after a while, too. Had to hop off and reset it with the on/off switch. Oops!) I'm definitely doing that again!

Anyway, enough about this asshole. Let's go talk about those assholes!

It's week two with our gang of loveable wannabe TV stars. Remember last week, when we established our baseline workout and got a taste of everyone's personalities. Nikki proved to be a troublemaker, and Joe showed us that he's got that extra special combination of "cockiness" and "low self-esteem". Brian ran stairs with cookie-hands, and Stacy lost "a small puppy". So what are we in for this week?

I paid a little closer attention to the opening credits this week. (Thank God they're short--my attention span can't handle it anymore. Thanks, 21st century!) There's a lot of buzzwords flashing up, and it's clear that Jackie really wants to be the personal savior to all of these folks. And ya know what? She just can't. I know she's not doing the group therapy herself, but I still don't see her making a transformation to anyone's soul. I'd trust her with my abs and that's about it.

Bryan's chillin' at home with his partner, Miguel. He's nibbling begrudgingly on rice cakes and bitching about the diet he's been on so far. (He's not bitching about the seven pounds he's lost, though!) Miguel's a really supportive partner, encouraging without being crazed and letting Bryan run the show. (But hopefully stepping in if Bryan starts to go off the wagon.) They're cute. Bryan wants turkey tonight, and in the voice-over, he helpfully informs us that he feels unattractive and that this affects his relationship. Ah, the melding of the mundane and the deep. This show.

Shay and Kim are having breakfast--some yogurt, which I thought was against the law! Even if it's fat-free plain Greek yogurt, it's still 9 grams of sugar! (I just checked mine!) Shay, you're a bad person. Just kidding. She's happy to be under 200. And Kim wants her to move her ass so they can get their workout started.

Bravo's caption reads, "Shay enjoying a healthy breakfast." Not according to Jackie, she's not!

Hey, let's all meet at the gym. And then let's just sit there in the lobby for a while. Nikki's been out all night, took a quick nap between parties and this workout. She probably REEKS of alcohol. Like, it's coming out of her pores. A boozy friend of mine helped me move a few years ago, and though he hadn't had a drink yet that day, the stuff he'd imbibed the night before just oozed out of him all morning. It was like a distillery hauling my couch up the stairs. Anyway, Joe's pretty judgmental about Nikki's behaviors, and he's that way because he hates himself. We all know that already, right?

Jackie shows up and is like, "WTF? Get inside and start warming up!" I bet they don't sit around like that again! Assistant trainer Craig is already in there, getting in his own workout before they get started. I can appreciate that he's a handsome guy, but I'm not into blonde men. Especially blonde men with a Spencer-like flesh-beard. (And is it me, or is he a little beady-eyed or cross-eyed?)

Jackie calls everyone around to talk about this week's workout strategy. It's the basics of strength training, working to complete muscle failure. I'm on board with this right now, because it's something I'm doing in my own workouts. You push until you can't. Your muscle fibers tear up a little with the stress of the workout, and it's in their repair of themselves that you get stronger. This is all good, go forth Jackie. (She just thanked me for my blessing. You didn't hear her? See, I need to lose 15 lbs, but I'm the expert here today.)

Jackie's next coaching strategy is to tell them not to stop until they drop. Motivation and mental fortitude are very important things in working out and losing weight. A half-hearted workout isn't going to do a whole lot for you. Sure, it's better than sitting on the couch all night, but still. You have to push yourself. It might be uncomfortable, but you don't get stronger unless you push yourself. However, these folks are still pretty new to what's going on, and I worry that we're going from zero to sixty a little too hardcore. Then again, I think they've been working out all week so far, so I hope...

Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Die

Creator: David Crowder, Mike Hogan | Family & Relationships - 2009-10-30

In this unique and engaging book, Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, but Nobody Wants to Die, musicians David Crowder and Mike Hogan remind readers that a life lived to the fullest inevitably includes pain and grief.

About this book
'Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. And heaven, if we're to believe what was proposed by a man two thousand years ago, is a kingdom coming and a kingdom here and now; something for the present, not reserved entirely for the ever after. Right now we exist somewhere between here and there, and bluegrass carries the high lonesome song of our condition in its soul. None of us are getting out of here alive, but we will conclude that death is not the ultimate calamity.' --David Crowder and Mike Hogan When grief shatters our world and the pain of death and loss consumes us, we not only yearn for comfort, we want answers. Musicians David Crowder and Mike Hogan help us find those answers---and give us a song of hope in the meantime. In this unique book filled with warm, thought-provoking, and often hilarious insights, Crowder and Hogan reveal how bluegrass music can reach our souls like nothing else. Bluegrass was born from pain but has hope at its core; it gives us a song that assures us that death does not win, it is the beginning.
