  very nice for the price

  I'm absolutely not an expert on classical instruments, and I'm sure this wouldn't be the choice viola for the serious violist (or possibly even the serious student), I am a musician though(guitar & piano), and have to admit that, for the price, I've been very impressed by the quality of the tone of the instrument. There's no slip to the pegs, and it comes with pitch pipe, extra strings, rosin and instructions for setting up the bridge, which is all very handy. Haven't really noticed any serious de-tuning that you wouldn't expect from any new set of strings. Definitely recommended for anyone interested in playing around with a bowed instrument, but who may not be ready to drop 2-4 hundred dollars, or for a student who's on a serious budget.Basically, its not terribly fancy, but its a solid viola at a very decent price. 5/5 QE (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)   Great Viola for a young beginner to try out

  After renting a viola for 4 years (!!), with my daughter having 5 years left of primary school where I knew she would be playing, I had the ingenious idea to finally buy a viola! I really had no idea how much it would cost so I hopped on Amazon and this one is PERFECT. The price was right, it looks great (viola, case, bow - - everything), my daughter is happy and now I dont have to pay $75 bucks every 3 months for a rental!!! It also came very fast! Great product, would definitely recommend!Update: Unfortunately, my daughter's orchestra teacher didn't see things quite the same and the viola didn't work out (I ended up donating it). SO, turns out that this is a great viola for a young child that is interested in music - - wants to play around and/or check out the concept - - but cannot be used as a serious instrument. 3/5 Laura D.   Excellent, especially for the price

  For the price, you really can't beat this viola. I purchased this to see if playing a bowed instrument would suit me, and it was absolutely the best thing I could have done. After only having played it for a day, I am sure that not only will I continue to play but that this instrument will last me long enough until the day comes when I feel like spending more on a more professional instrument.The bow is straight and plays both the viola and violin nicely.The case is sturdy enough to be protective and has enough features to be useful. There is room for two bows and accessories. There is also a pocket for sheet music.The viola itself is very nice looking. It has a beautiful glossy finish, and although there are some minor imperfections with the finish on mine, they are only noticeable upon close inspection. Again, for the money, you can't beat it.The fine tuners work well and the tuning pegs keep the instrument in tune.   Decent Viola

  This viola is decent for an orchestra student. The strings and bridge are not very durable/strong, after a tuning one bridge cracked, and after a few months of use one string is starting to "peel" The bow itself had many loose hairs (when tightened) when it arrived, and weekly, some strings start to easily fall out. Another con is that the bridge is not cut, so you'll need to send it into a string shop to do so for around $30-$40.   A little disappointed. I received the Viola rather quick and I was impressed with that. It is very attractive as well. The pegs and the box area did not fit properly. The strings were rather cheap. The bridge was not the correct size. I took it to a violin/viola specialty store and the repair person said I would need to invest atleast 250 to repair and made it ready for play.   Peg box made poorly, bridge too large

  When we received the viola and set the strings properly we discovered the bridge was too large for the instrument and the peg box was not made correctly. We took it to our local music shop and they needed to drill the holes to the right size, restring the instrument and set the pegs properly, as well as take down the bridge a bit. After weeks of trying to get the instrument to tune properly, the pegs are still consistently coming out of place because come to find out, the peg box and pegs are warped from possible storage and shopping.   Great bargain starter viola

  I got mine yesterday; 15" in black. It had no serious defects that some of the other reviewers mention.Mine sounds and plays very well. At 90 bucks, it's no Stradivarius, but it has a pleasing tone and can be LOUD if played that way, plus it includes a very nice case, extra strings and bridge, a bow, and rosin; it's almost worth the price just for the case alone.Mine came with the bridge off and strings slack, but the sound post was still in place, and the bridge is easy to put on (there is a front and a back to the bridge; just make sure the downward slope is toward the higher strings, and is positioned between the middle notches of the F holes with the feet square on the viola top. It will need straightening after the strings are tuned). I used a bit of peg oil (sold by Amazon) on each tuning peg before I tuned it as the pegs tend to slip without it.   I still have the Julliard Quartet lp set of the Beethoven middle quartets -- and their much-acclaimed first set of the Bartok quartets among other fine lps -- but this is the first Julliard CD I have acquired. I was persuaded by the Gramophone review, which seemed to indicate that the substitue allegro finale was included after the Grosse Fuga, and all was followed by the Op. 135. Well, not quite. The Grosse Fuga is indeed the (rightful) finale of Op. 130. The disc then moves on to Op.135. I believe their complete set of the Late Quartets does offer the allegro as an encore. Recordings by the Lindsay, Brandis, and Vegh Quartets also offer that arrangement, and all are worth the money.This Julliard disc is also worth it's price, and more. Much, much more. Warmth and depth characterize these performances -- even the cover photo seems to capture the glow of this disc. I have never heard the Julliard Quartet sound so, well, beautiful.
