    Great starter

Experienced ukulele players like to bag on the Lanikai, but it's been a great starter ukulele for me. The stock strings (aquila) have excellent play and once you get past the initial couple of days, hold it in tune very well.It has a classic ukulele sound, but does have a full textured sound (it doesn't sound like a tinny toy). This is a production model, so there won't be much of a sense of individuality. Every Lanikai LU-21 is the same, and since the solid wood top is made from a wood that lacks much grain, that sense is increased (you better put your name on it if you know you're going to be around other beginners). The one thing that I don't like much is the tuning pegs. There's a bit of play in them which can get wearisome when you're close to being tuned but are making some fine adjustments. 4/5 koba22 "koba22" (Meadow Vista, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lanikai LU-21 Soprano Ukulele (Electronics) Experienced ukulele players like to bag on the Lanikai, but it's been a great starter ukulele for me. Wonderful.

I was skeptical on what ukulele I should get as my first, and I consulted plenty of things: uke owners, reviews and various other things. After plenty of searching, I came to the conclusion of getting this one because it was recommended by uke owners and its reviews were good. It was definitely a good choice. The strings are great, but in the beginning it takes a bit to get the strings to stay in tune. It's such a wonderful tone, and the size is just about right. If you're getting your first uke, I recommend this one. 5/5 rogelyosep - See all my reviews This review is from: Lanikai LU-21 Soprano Ukulele (Electronics) I was skeptical on what ukulele I should get as my first, and I consulted plenty of things: uke owners, reviews and various other things. Amazing Soprano Uke

After spending two days using a brandless ukulele from a music store, this little baby came in the mail, much to my delight. With Aquila strings, low action, and beautiful craftsmanship, the quality of this product is apparent before even the first strum. If you're looking to start playing ukulele or are switching from a larger uke, this is the way to go. Great Standard Uke for Beginners

For the price, and the looks, this ukulele delivers 100%. It's beautiful, it sounds great- mine has never once had any tuning problems or fretboard problems, and it's an overall great, great ukulele for beginners. I've had mine for a year and a half and still love it. 5/5 Kayla Salewsky - See all my reviews, May 7, 2010

    Great Ukulele for beginners

I bought 12 of these ukuleles for my high school program. They are excellent Ukuleles for beginners on a budget. They hold their tune well, and are pretty sturdy. These do not have friction tuners, which is a plus! My only recommendation is that you purchase Aquila strings for them. The black strings are ok, but they are not as resonant as when you place Aquilas on them :) 4/5 Lauren C Bowman (Torrance, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Makala MK-S Soprano Ukulele I bought 12 of these ukuleles for my high school program. Excellent starter instrument.

I am new to ukulele, and I researched them thoroughly. This one had consistently good reviews, and it did not disappoint me. It has a very sweet sound, and the strings it came with were not too "bright". It holds its tuning wonderfully, and is a joy to play. I would not hesitate to recommend this little gem to anyone looking to spend under $50. I am really enjoying it. 5/5 P. Jacobson - See all my reviews, July 10, 2010

Good little gig bag with padding, strap, and front pocket

This gig bag was just what I needed to carry around a soprano ukelele. It has a strap for slinging the instrument over your shoulder when in the gig bag, padding, and a pocket in the front for your tuner. Good Cheap Uke

I ordered this uke because I decided I finally wanted one after playing my uncles ukulele for a while. This is a really good ukulele for really cheap. As far as the size goes, it's tiny because it's a Soprano ukulele, it has a brighter sound to it because of this and it's really neat. The other review on here states that the strings that come with the ukulele are plastic but they are actually clear nylon, which is what goes on a uke. The other review also states that the ukulele doesn't stay in tune and this is true at first, as with most ukes you have to keep tuning it for a while because it's new strings and they have to be broken in before they start to keep tune. I know this because as I stated, my uncle plays ukulele as well and he had the same problem at first and now it's fine.In general this is a high quality ukulele, the only thing I would note is that you should buy a tuner with it so you can keep in tune when you play (obviously) and it is a smaller uke because it is... 5/5 Ezekiel W. good classroom instrument

I purchased these ukuleles in rainbow colors for my elementary general music classroom. I would describe them as a good classroom instrument because they are of a quality that young students can experience learning to play, while I am able to relax and let them strum away to their hearts content. The instruments, only a week old in my classroom, are still requiring quite a bit of tuning. I have been playing one I bought at a local music store (for $10 more than Amazon's price), and after 3 weeks of play it is finally holding its tune fairly well. I chose this product because of it's price (fairly easy to replace if disaster occurs), and the colors appeal to the kids, too. The quality has been good for most of the instruments, but a few have some scuffs or discolorations on the body. As with any instrument, some have better sound and tuning than others, but overall I am pleased with the quality of the sound as well. 4/5 Jill from Iowa - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) BEST UKE EVER!!!

This is probably the best investment I've made in a long time. I only paid like $21 for it and it is awesome! I've had it for several months and I haven't had to change the strings yet, and I expected them to be awful and only last a short time, but they're still going strong. My friend bought a $40 ukulele from a guitar store and it doesn't even compare. The 'economy' of this soprano Uke means that it's a bit bigger than a normal Soprano Ukulele and it's the perfect size. The green color always attracts the interest of others and it's cheerful sound never ceases to entertain. This is honestly a great investment!!! 5/5 Covered. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Underrated.

I really hate to see people talking bad about this ukulele. It only needs two things. A good set up on the tuners. By tightening the screw on each tuner to a point where it is in tune for that string. That has kept my ukulele in tune for weeks (if no major weather changes are taken). And, two, a new set of strings. That improves intonation 100%. There you will have a great ukulele in that price range. 5/5 Luz L. Pretty Good Ukulele

This Ukulele is outstanding. Me myself have never played an Ukulele before but I do play the guitar and cello. Very easy for ME to pick up and play. The only suggestion I have is that you carry a handy screw driver around in the case. The pegs slip really easily, not a big deal, all you do is screw the nuts in after find the exact note, tighten them as much as you can and you should have no problem. Over a very outstanding ukulele. Also I highly recommend getting new strings. I already order them and they should be here soon. great little instrument

My husband and I started playing ukulele this summer. We wanted small instruments to take camping. I was afraid the soprano would be too small, so I bought a concert size Kala in electric blue (I thought the color was fun). My hubby got a tenor Kala in Mahogany. Within a month I realized my shiny blue concert was too slippery and slid down my belly while playing in a standing position. I put a couple of small velcro squares on the back to prevent slipping but it didn't help much. I decided to get a soprano in Mahogany and ordered a Kala since the first two were well made. When the soprano Kala it arrived I was happy to see it came with Aquila strings which are better quality than the original strings on the other two Kalas. We changed the strings on the other two ukes for Aquilas based on recommendations from seasoned uke players. The soprano size is plenty big enough for me, although my husband says his big fingers have trouble fitting on the smaller neck after... 5/5 Kate Johnson "migrator" (offshore) - See all my reviews, November 20, 2009

    Best Value for my money

I bought this Ukulele from Amazon. I also own a Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele and a Lanikai LU-21C concert Ukulele. But this Mahalo Soprano Ukulele is my favorite Ukulele. The strings stay some what tuned after a few days of stretching. The sound is not great when compared to my Lanikai with Aquila strings but good enough for everyday practicing. The only string that does not sound as good is the C string being the lowest in tone. The geared tuners works well. The finishing is satisfactory. The included bag is good enough for me. This Ukulele is perfect for students for it has good intonation, playable, and cheap. I am very satisfy with this Ukulele. Best Value for my money. 5/5 S. Ooi (FL, USA) - See all my reviews, January 27, 2010

    Worth the money

If you are expecting a concert-grade instrument for this price, you are living in a fool's paradise. However, this was tunable, playable, and the sound is pretty good. The case that mine came with is simple cloth, but since most don't come with any case, it's good enough. If you have never bought an instrument new, or replaced strings on an existing instrument, you should be aware that the strings stretch a lot when first put under tension. This may be what caused many poor reviews. For the first few days, just keep tuning it, maybe a little sharp if you have the mind to, and the strings will be okay. Even an hour after first tuning my unit, the strings stretched so it was several full tones off. (Be patient, it's just a baby!!)Bottom line: If you want a good uke, maybe for taking on a camping trip, or teaching your kids to play (What mine is for), this is a good product. I've had this for about a month and it's exactly what I expected for the price. A nice little instrument perfectly capable of making decent sounds.Don't buy this expecting to start a professional Ukulele band but do buy it if you are curious about the instrument. You'll be able to play enough to decide if you want to go further or not.My only complaint would be that the action is weak the further you travel down the neck and the nice sound disappears. 4/5 J. Get this one if you want to read music, especially notes

which is exactly what I was looking for. This book starts with the very beginning and covers the basics of music theory and ukulele playing. I think the book is pretty comprehensive and well-written, if very basic. I like the fact that it teaches you how to "tune the instrument to itself" (relative tuning)in the beginning. After preliminaries about the ukulele itself, the reader learns all the basic stuff that everyone has to learn who took band in school or had music lessons--musical notation, rhythm, and so on. This music theory basis is added upon as the student progresses. For example, you will learn what makes up a scale--both major and minor--and what music "keys" are.The strong point of this lesson book lies in it's teaching of the individual notes on the strings. To me, this is very important. You will learn not only how to play chords and strum and sing along, but you will be able to pick out melodies on the strings and read from regular sheet music. The best beginner book.

I have looked at several beginner books for the ukulele and this is the most concise and comprehensive. It begins with the most simple of lessons on each string and quickly has you playing chords and scales while learning fun tunes. The companion CD is perfectly matched and provides extra information. You can't beat the price and the material. A+. 5/5 T. A. Verica (California) - See all my reviews, November 6, 2009

    New Uke player

I am a new Uke player and have only been using this instructional materiel for a short period of time. So far, so good. It explained the basics well and I have made decent progress so far. I recommend this instructional guide to other beginners. 5/5 Robert A. Tylicki (San Diego) - See all my reviews, July 25, 2010

    Hohner/Lanikai Stringed Instruments

Same as LU-21 Model but with less expensive materials and workmanship

I'm a former solid-body guitar builder and also a music teacher of younger children, teenagers and adults. I also play bass, guitar, ukelele and piano.I bought this LU-11 ukelele to experiment with the idea of turning the ukelele into a soprano guitar that is easier for younger children to learn than even a 1/2 size guitar. That way they get all the benefits of the small size, while still learning chords and notes that apply to the top four strings of a guitar. Eventually, they can move onto 6-string guitar, and everything they've learned with the soprano guitar applies. This instrument met all my expectations for playability and sound. It sounded good, was well intonated, and was pretty loud for such a small instrument. I didn't notice a big difference in the sounds between this model, and the more expensive LU-21 model. It was just as easy to play. The finish was pretty good -- a deeper, richer color than the LU-21 model I also own... 4/5 Professor Challenger "The Ideator" (Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lanikai LU-11 Soprano Ukulele (Electronics) I'm a former solid-body guitar builder and also a music teacher of younger children, teenagers and adults. Great Ukulele

I bought this little wonder three months after a trip to Hawaii where I had purchased a lesser quality Leolani ukulele in a music shop on Waikiki. The shop also had some of these Lanikai Ukulele's selling between $80-$100. I was shocked to later find these on Amazon for a buck less than I paid for the Leolani. Upon receiving it I tuned it and could not believe the difference in quality! This little gem really has a nice sound! The Aquilla Nylgut strings sound amazing! and for $39! you simply can't go wrong with it.It comes with a small instruction book with a few tunes , a basic chord chart and tuning instructions. Although I recommend using an on-line tuning site or an electronic tuner for more accuracy. This is a very nice ukulele at an unbelievable price. 5/5 flash (Cumberland, MD. nice sound, good product

We bought this ukelele for our son who has taken an interest in all things somewhat off-beat. He has recently taught himself the basics of the guitar, and wanted something more portable and different from everyone else. This little ukelele has become his constant companion. It has a great sound and has held up surprisingly well, considering it goes with him almost everywhere, neatly tucked away in his backpack. It does need constant tuning, as ALL ukeleles do, but he has found a website with a ukelele tuner on it, thus eliminating the need for us to buy anything additional just yet. It appears to be well made- this thing has survived bike rides, train rides, and large groups of high school boys trying to make music on it. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice it sounds. He also is able to find chords for many songs, again through various websites. It is a bit different than playing a guitar, but we are very happy with this product and definitely recommend it! 5/5 Mother of two (South Holland, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
