Publisher: For Dummies

About this book
A complete guide to the world of the five-string banjo written for both beginners and more experienced players. Packed with over 120 how-to photos and 130 musical examples. 94 track CD included - hear and play along with every exercise and song. The only book to offer instruction in clawhammer, bluegrass, melodic, single-string, minstrel and classic styles. From Earl Scruggs’ driving bluegrass picking to the genre-busting jazz fusion of Béla Fleck and the multi-million selling movie soundtrack  O Brother Where Are Thou?, the five-string banjo can be heard just about everywhere in American music these days. Banjo For Dummies is the most complete guide to the five-string banjo ever written. It covers everything you need to get into the banjo: including how to choose, tune and care for your instrument, developing a good playing posture, fretting your first chords and getting comfortable with the left and right hand picking patterns used for clawhammer and bluegrass playing techniques. You’ll then add the left hand, spicing up your playing with slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and chokes for an authentic five-string banjo sound. From there, you’ll move on the play 19th century minstrel style, early 20th century classic style as well as try your hand at more advanced examples of bluegrass style. An in-depth chapter on bluegrass music explores Scruggs licks and techniques as well as melodic and single-string styles, with song examples. Also included is a banjo buyer’s guide, a section on music theory as applied to bluegrass and old-time music, an accessories guide (advice on cases, picks, straps, metronomes, computer aids and much more), information on how to find a good teacher, banjo camp or festival, chord charts, bios of twelve influential players, practice tips and much, much more! Banjo For Dummies is accessible and fun to read and it’s easy to locate just what you’re interested in playing. Included are 20 songs including several new compositions written by the author just for this book, including Reno Rag (single-string style), “Winston’s Jig” (Irish three-finger), and “Everyday Breakdown” (Scruggs style). All musical examples are played slowly on the accompanying CD, many with guitar and mandolin accompaniment. Bill Evans is one of the world’s most celebrated banjo players and teachers. He has taught thousands of people to play the five-string banjo in private lessons and group workshops literally all over the world. In addition to leading the Bill Evans String Summit, Bill has performed with Dry Branch Fire Squad, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Tony Trischka and many others and he hosts his own acclaimed banjo camp, the NashCamp Fall Banjo Retreat in the Nashville area. As an American music historian, he has taught at San Francisco State University, the University Virginia and Duke University. He has written a popular instructional column for Banjo Newsletter magazine for the last fifteen years and hosts three popular instructional DVDs for AcuTab Publications. It does the job

This tail piece has great workmanship, looks nice and is also inexpensive. However, the slots in the pins are too shallow to allow use of strings with a bead on the end. I put loops in the strings and put them around the pins to string it. I used this tailpiece on a new banjo ukulele and it works well. I added a picture of this installation to the site. ADDENUM: After catching my wrist on the string endS a couple of times, I decided to deepen the grooves with a hacksaw blade and put the beads on the strings. This worked well. It also looks a lot better (cleaner) than the loops around the pins. If Golden Gate would just make the pin grooves about 1/16" deeper, this would be a perfect little tailpiece. As it is mine will probably rust in time because making the grooves deeper removed the nickel plating in the grooves. 4/5 Lrstaf6 (Southern Wisconsin) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Replacement for Banjo No Knot Tailpiece

I bought this to replace the No Knot on my Gold Tone Banjo. I had broke off one of the metal hooks on the original. A couple of hooks were loose and rotating in the one that came with the banjo after a year of use. These are great. They fit like to original, except, the screw was not long enough. I was able to reuse the old screw in place of the one that came with this. These are stamped with the No Knot 1901 Patent on the face. A nice touch to this classic banjo tailpiece.I am glad that these are made and sold on Amazon. The local music stores are charging twice the price that is listed here. 5/5 M. Saga banjo neck

This old pot belonged to a banjo-mandolin from the 1930's. I replaced the mando neck with the Saga unfinished neck. The old neck was attached with a wooden dowel rod which I replicated and attached to the new neck. It worked great. The neck required very little finish sanding - I added a peg head and heel cover and the hardware. 5/5 Robert T Goodwin (Selma, NC United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This banjo case was better than I expected based on the low cost. Carrion C-2901 Fretted Resonator Banjo Case

I just received this case today and my banjo fits pretty nicely. The banjo measures 39" x 14" x 6" (LxWxH). This case is padded nice and has a compartment to place picks and other small items into and has a set of keys to lock up. I put the banjo inside, shut the lid and then picked it up and shook it. Pretty nice fit. I think it'll survive a ride down the bumpy road. A year ago I paid twenty five for a used case that is unpadded, this one was just a few dollars more. I think this is a good deal for me since I'm just getting started with all of this and hopefully it'll last a few years.I would have liked to known the inside measurements of this case before I bought it. According to my measurements: 39.75" x 13.75" x 5" (LxWxH). Most of the padding is around the resonator and a little bit on the neck when you close the lid. It kinda snugs the banjo when the lid is closed, but doesn't seem to hurt anything. 4/5 OH Log Gal - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very Nice Bag!

This is a great bag- very sturdy, padded like crazy and has a good storage pocket. I usually prefer hard cases but from what I read, open backed banjos do not fit very well in most hard cases. Considering this was made specifically for my Deering banjo, it fits perfectly. Highly recommended, plus it's cheaper on Amazon than from Deering directly. Excellent buy! 5/5 P. Great Strings

I bought these strings to try out because of Gibson's reputation for quality products. I was amazed at how much better these strings sounded than my last $3 special. I usually have to change strings every month(I play alot of banjo) but I have had these on for a month and a half and they still sound great. They also stayed tuned quite well. I have only had to tune it a couple times. You cannot find a better product at this price. It is not worth it to buy cheap strings more frequently. Buy these and you will not be dissapointed. Decent string but the $ 3 ones work and sound just as good!

I thought the name would be worth the price, think again. I don't think they sound or play any better than the GHS and D'Addario strings that cost half the price. I did find that medium Gibson strings is a little deceiving. I ordered a couple of sets from another source and these from Amazon to find substantially different gauges between the two but both were advertised as medium. 4/5 rb1947 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
