    Excellent "Starter" Upright (String) Bass

Hi readers,I was in the market for a starter string bass for 2-3 months in the spring of 2006, but wasn't serious enough to try to locate a shop that had any that I could try out.I really lucked out by finding this Chinese crafted string bass on Craigslist; at a small music store in Vancouver, Washington, a short drive from my home in Portland, Oregon. As I recall, it was a very hot day (6/24/06) when I went to locate the as advertised: New 3/4 Cremona SB-2 with padded gigbag with 1 yr warranty, for six benjamins. This was an interesting, but strange shopping experience - let me explain. I spent half an hour ear-tuning the bass against the bass guitars hanging up on display - taking a while since I was not familiar with the tension and gear ratio of string bass tuning machines. Once I got this SB-2 roughly in tune, I realized I didn't know how to play it. Even though I played fretted and fretless Fender P and J- basses, the 3/4 double bass... 5/5 Nutty Professor - See all my reviews This review is from: Cremona SB-2 Premier Student Upright String Bass, 3/4 size (Electronics) Hi readers,I was in the market for a starter string bass for 2-3 months in the spring of 2006, but wasn't serious enough to try to locate a shop that had any that I could try out.I really lucked out by finding this Chinese crafted string bass on Craigslist; at a small music store in Vancouver, Washington, a short drive from my home in Portland, Oregon. As I recall, it was a very hot day (6/24/06) when I went to locate the as advertised: New 3/4 Cremona SB-2 with padded gigbag with 1 yr warranty, for six benjamins. This was an interesting, but strange shopping experience - let me explain. I'm quite happy with it actually. It's well designed in every way. It's in bold color with big letters . You can see it clearly on a music stand from across the room. It's a lot of info at a low price. I'll be buying more for students. 5/5 Rickey Noel Mitchell (Fresno ,Ca) - See all my reviews, April 2, 2011

    Nice little ax

I've played my little Palatino for a couple of gigs. It does require a couple of tweaks, but they are easy and any bass player would find them mindless tweaks (replacing strings, etc.). I am a bit concerned about the switch on the pre-amp. It doesn't seem like it will hold up, but we'll see. I get a lot of positive comments about how it looks. That's not all that important to me, but even the band continues to say things like, "man, that thing looks so cool." It gets a surprisingly good sound. I do tweak that too by feeding it through an effects pedal. I'm not trying to sell anything here, but you can get it to fatten things up by running through a Digitec RP 55 or the like. I'm sure any player would have his/her own ideas about how to get to exactly where you want with the sound, and it would depend on what you are playing. Let's just say that at the end of the night, I almost hate to put it down. 5/5 Maj Thom - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Its alright. Pickups aren't great.

I bought this about 6 years ago. I'm not sure if they have updated it since I bought mine in 2005. Mine is sort of a sunburst color. Gigged a few times, generally light use, I don't play much anymore. It works pretty well and has held up to light use.Pros: looks great, easy action, simple use. Heavy solid body. Inexpensive. Neck is dead straight. Machine heads look cool.Cons: Pickup isn't the best. I stuff a towel under the bridge otherwise it vibrates too much. The pickup, which I think is a peizo, is under the bridge, and it picks up any vibration at all in the body, or even on the stage. Kind of cheaply made in some ways. Headphone jack is not loud enough. Difficult to get a pleasing tone out of it, but definitely possible. This can make some very unique tones, and is so-so at making the tones you probably want. Prone to feedback at loud volumes.I never changed the bridge or the strings, but I have a vague memory of doing some filing to my... 3/5 Rich - See all my reviews This review is from: Palatino Electric Upright Bass, Black Finish (Electronics) I bought this about 6 years ago. Couldn't be happier.

I couldn't be happier with the Pace Upright. I received it as a Christmas gift after having been interested in it for some time. It is, as others on various forms have written, a great bridge between modern electric basses and standard uprights. Having been playing fretless nearly exclusively for a couple years, the note-finding was very easy and the playability is easy and smooth. The sound isn't a standard fretless sound, nor is it distinctly an upright sound, but a good melding of the two into a very unique instrument. The piezo pickup is lively and strong, the tuning pegs/keys are solid and it holds tune extremely well. No tone control, but any eq'ing you need is easily done at the amplifier level - plenty of room to work with as far as the bass signal. The stand is much sturdier than I had anticipated as well, very well-done as far as construction and it is very solid. The only complaint is possibly that it is a bridge and bowing is not really an option, but even having... 5/5 Scot Kaeff "Pleiades" (Georgetown, KY) - See all my reviews, January 10, 2010

An unbelievable value, go for it!

Bass is my second instrument, so I wouldn't call myself a pro, but I love playing bass and I only play fretless instruments.I was concerned that I really needed to spend at least two grand to get an electric-only upright that sounded decent and was pleasurable to play, but this has been a really satisfying purchase.I have been lending it to a bass player I'm currently gigging with regularly, a friend who ordinarily only plays a big old acoustic upright, and he has fallen in love with it, too, actually preferring it to his regular axe! 5/5 Mr. "Hawlywood" (Eastern Washington) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dean Upright Fretless Pace Bass, Classic Black, with Case (Electronics) Bass is my second instrument, so I wouldn't call myself a pro, but I love playing bass and I only play fretless instruments.I was concerned that I really needed to spend at least two grand to get an electric-only upright that sounded decent and was pleasurable to play, but this has been a really satisfying purchase.I have been lending it to a bass player I'm currently gigging with regularly, a friend who ordinarily only plays a big old acoustic upright, and he has fallen in love with it, too, actually preferring it to his regular axe! Fun to play, overwhelming pick ups and odd tone

I bought this as a fluke - I wanted to try an electric stand up for a while and this one kept popping up. I have a great time playing it but it has two pretty large issues and one minor thing to note. First off, the pick ups are really hot. I can run through my active in on my amp but it still is screaming hot - in fact running direct to the board through a DI box was overwhelming the board and causing it to distort making the bass unusable. Secondly, the tone is very bright with hardly any low end. Instead of a smooth sound the bass has a very clunky, almost metal sound. I cannot easily switch between this and my other basses because I need to change the EQ settings considerably to roll between the two. The minor issue depends on how you were looking to play - this bass is set up like a guitar bass and not like a standing bass - don't expect to use a bow as the strings are essentially flat.I need to do a lot more tweaking and testing to find the sweet spot for this... 3/5 Eric - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Best Beginning Bass Book I have seen!

"How I wish I had had this book when I was just beginning to teach the bass years ago. It is so clear and straightforward, incorporating everything needed for the beginning bass student. With other bass books I have worked with this is not the case. Now I am relieved that I have this resource and can feel completely comfortable and confident about the material I am using. This is by far the best beginning bass book I have seen!" 5/5 Sally A Cleary (Campton, NH United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: The ABCs of Bass for the Absolute Beginner to the Intermediate Student (Book 1) (Paperback) "How I wish I had had this book when I was just beginning to teach the bass years ago. Easy as Pie!

I've played bass guitar for 6 years and wanted to learn string bass. This book was easy as 1 2 3. All the finger graphs showed me where the notes are. There are 49 songs, alot of familiar, alot of new ones. In the back of the book there are duets, scales, a glossary and practice chart.Worked great for me! It's says there's a book 2 on the back of the book--that's next for me. 5/5 Lenny (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The ABCs of Bass for the Absolute Beginner to the Intermediate Student (Book 1) (Paperback) I've played bass guitar for 6 years and wanted to learn string bass. Something for everyone.

I ordered this book, wondering whether there could indeed be a book that would make true on its promise to be of equal value to both beginning and intermediate students. But working throug it, it turned out to be just that: every bass player, whether just beginning or more advanced, will get pleasure from going over the exercises. And going through it one picks up or revives useful bits of knowledge. A little gem, highly recommended. 4/5 Rolf Wolfswinkel (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, September 9, 2007
