About this book
After listening to the Missionary speakers at Refuge Baptist Church in Red Hill, Alabama; I was so enthralled with their stories of the people of Africa and the hardships they endured daily, I was consumed with the desire to help when I became an adult. Coming home on those inspired Sundays I would tell my mother of the exciting things I learned about Africa and my plan to become a Missionary. Knowing my aspirations to be a writer, she encouraged me to go and write a book about my life there, she would be so proud. I was twelve years old. As children will do, I assured my mother I would write a book about my life in Africa. That promise, having been made before the journey even started, has gone unfulfilled until now. These poems have become my Africa and the lessons I would have tried to teach had I gone so long ago. I am praying this book of poetry will be the bridge to my dreams of writing her that promised book. I did not become a Missionary, never been out of the states, and only short, telling pieces of my life have ended up on paper as prose or poetry. These are not stories of Africa or anywhere far away, but right here, day to day life, personal, and yet universal in so many ways.

Take this to heart. I have been playing for 16 years this Christmas. For the first seven years I experimented with different brands and gauges. These were the strings I settled on after all that experimentation and I have never looked back. Slinky 9's are ALL I have bought for the past nine years. There are two types of electric guitar strings: Expensive and cheap. NEVER buy cheap strings. They sound too bright and about one out of twenty will break when you wind them up. Expensive strings are a little more complicated. The durability factor is much better with expensive strings. About one out of eighty will break. The difference between the expensive brands is in the sound. Some are "tinny" or bright. Some sound like bass strings tuned way up. With that said, Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9's have what I call a "V" voicing. It's like they have a little equalizer built in set to a good rock setting. You know, boost the mids and highs and roll back the mids. THESE... are the only strings... 5/5 B. Stallings "Peanut" (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews, May 29, 2006

    Simple and Effective

I've been playing the guitar for 20 years, and I've tried a lot of different strings. Across all of the different options that are available, I'm convinced that there are really two variables that control 95% of the sound:1) String gauge. Suck it up and buy the 11's. You will *not* get the tone that heavy strings deliver with pedals, rack effects, or other widgets. Yes, you fingers will hurt if you've been playing .009's. No, you will not regret it once you get used to it.2) String age. Change your strings when they start to sound bad. It's a pain, but even good technique and heavy strings can't make up for crusty, stretched-out, worn-out strings. Changing before every show is excessive. Use your ears; when the sparkle and crispness of new strings is gone, and the sound bothers you, then change your strings. That being said, I use Ernie Ball Slinkys pretty much exclusively these days. They're reasonably cheap, sound great, and are found in... 5/5 BeeSee - See all my reviews This review is from: Ernie Ball 2220 Power Slinky String Set (11 - 48) (Electronics) I've been playing the guitar for 20 years, and I've tried a lot of different strings. Love the Super Slinky strings!

My experience with guitar started in the 70s with a beat up acoustic my dad handed down to me. I was enthralled with the sounds of the guitar, but hated that giant hunk of junk. In the early 80s I got myself a job, tossed that pile of warped wood, and bought myself a Gibson electric. A friend quickly turned me on to GHS Boomers, which I used exclusively for probably 7-8 years. I had tried several other brands, but for me, the Boomers were the best.Well, the 90s came around, and my musical taste changed from alt-rock to a heavier sound. My preference transitioned from Gibson guitars through Orange and Mesa/Boogie amps to Jackson guitars through Marshall amps. Due to budgetary constraints, I switched to Carvin strings -- they used to be incredibly affordable -- but "discovered" the Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings when a guitar tech friend of mine restrung one of my super-strats for me, and that was that.So what do 'Slinkies' do?1. Bend forever... 5/5 A. Thomas (Washington DC) - See all my reviews, May 27, 2008

    GUITAR TECH REVIEW

Sorry about using my credentials in the title, but I want to convey how much experience I have with these strings. Sorry if I sound like an ad. I REALLY love these strings.I have strung literally thousands of guitars over my 40 years of repairing stringed instruments. D'Addario EJ16s are IMHO the best string money can buy- it is the standard of the industry for good reason... they're simply the best string available! D'Addario's corrosion-proof sealed bags ensure you get them as fresh as when they left the factory. Lower grade junky stings are shipped in simple paper envelopes and allow the strings to oxidize just sitting on the shelf or in your case. On the other hand, expensive hand made string, like DRs, are wrapped way too tightly, thus, have too much mass, so your intonation and rod will probably need to be readjusted. They also play stiffly. D'Addario uses the best steel and bronze alloy and wraps the wound strings with just the correct tension so the strings breathe... 5/5 Watch Guy "TheoB" (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: D'Addario EJ16-3D Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings, Light, 3 Sets (Electronics) Sorry about using my credentials in the title, but I want to convey how much experience I have with these strings. These strings are perfect for any level or type of Guitarist.

I have played the Acoustic Guitar for eight years, maybe a little more than that. I started with standard Martin strings which I eventually found my hatred for. When I discovered these strings a few years back ago (most, if not all music stores I have visited have strung their Guitars with the D'Addario brand), I never looked back and have always used D'Addario. Only recently have I begun to use these Bronze Light sets, which I am completely infatuated with. Most of what I play consist of finger style / classical songs, and these strings are quite easy to tap with. I've never had any problems, and the strings themselves come with color coded ball points to indicate which string is which (for a quick and easy string changing). If tapping/finger style isn't your bag, these strings should still satisfy your needs. The Guitarist "Tim Reynolds" uses these very same strings on his Martin Guitars, and I can't emphasize more on how amazing the bottom (thickest) string sounds,... 5/5 Jake L. Outstanding, consistent strings

I've used these strings for maybe 30 years -- and although on occasion I've tried other brands and other types (Martin, Dean Markley, Elixir, D'Addario EXPs) -- I always come back to these. They feel good, sound good, and are easy on the guitar and fingers. I found that they last as long as coated strings like EXPs and Elixirs and sound better. I like the little touches -- the anti-corrosion package, that strings are packaged one at a time (instead of 3 in one coil), colored ball ends, and even the Players Points that allow you to get stuff like T-shirts if you save enough string packages.I usually fingerpick and sometimes strum -- just your typical living room player who's too chicken to perform -- and I've used these with small body and dreadnaught Martins and Gibsons. If you buy these via a 3 pack or a 10 pack, you usually can get these for under $5 a set, and sometimes around $4 a set if there's a good deal running. 5/5 Aaron Bransky - See all my reviews, December 19, 2010

No need for a thousand dollar guitar

I have a 25 year old Yamaha FG-200D(Domestic model, made in Japan) acoustic guitar. When I bought it, it was around 200 - 250 USD. I always liked the way it sounded. It was always loud, bass rich, but a little dull in high tones. Recently I purchased a set of Elixir Nanoweb Light strings. Afterwards, it sounded so great that I won't change it for a thousand dollar worth Martin. I realized that the difference was not in high strings, it was the coated low ones which now sounds crystal clear and still rich. I strongly recommend to any acoustic player. 5/5 O. Oh yes

two things that will make this simple for everyone. First off I will never go back to anything else for acoustic and second the polyweb are great but I HIGHLY recommend the nano. The tone is beautiful, soft and they last forever. If you want a higher sound with more treble go for the polyweb. 5/5 William R. Hoyes "Hoyes" (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews, May 16, 2007

    love Elixir nanoweb

I have been using Elixir Nanoweb strings for almost two years, and won't buy anything else. What they say about long string life is absolutely true. With other strings, I needed to change them after any gig or jam session that went more than a couple hours. If I didn't, the strings sounded really, really dead. I used to change strings at least weekly, and sometimes more often. When I play Elixir strings, they sound great when I put them on, and they still sound pretty good when I change them 3-4 months later. 5/5 Owl "nordic/celtic guitarist" (Minnesota USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Elixir Light Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings (Electronics) I have been using Elixir Nanoweb strings for almost two years, and won't buy anything else. Great sounding strings, not for beginners

These are medium strings, which means they're a heavier gauge than light. Heavier gauges will have fuller sound and sustain longer, but they're more difficult to fret and bend and will hurt your fingers more. So if you're just starting out with a full size dreadnought guitar buy some lights instead. That said, these pair very well with a short scale parlor guitar. The shorter scale means that the string tension is reduced, so medium strings will be more comfortable to use. Parlor guitars are smaller and have less natural power and projection than their larger cousins, so heavier gauge strings like these give them more presence. Just check with the manufacturer to make sure the bracing can handle medium strings. That goes for all acoustic guitars. 4/5 BluesKid (USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great sound, good life span

Most guitarists I know tend to buy the typical 80/20 phosphor bronze strings. These are 92/8 phosphor bronze and it really does make for a nicer sounding string. The unwound E and B strings are bronzed. If you aren't into the nano-webb strings (I'm not)to get long life out of your strings, try these, the do last longer than the 80/20's. I use these on my D style as well as a Martin OOO, sound great on both for bluesy, fingerstyle playing.Keep on pickin'!! 5/5 J. Scott Moore (Longmont, CO USA) - See all my reviews, March 19, 2008

    Great Strings, great price...

I have been playing guitar for a little over 10 years and I really love these strings. I have tried brands such as GHS, Ernie Ball, Dr, and more, but these seem to have one of the best feel. They have a real clarity in tone and are a great match especially for someone starting out playing, it will help their fingers not bleed as much because of the feel. The only brand that I think is a bit better is Dean Markley Blue Steels. They last longer, are brighter, and I am liking the feel a bit better as well. None the less, for the price and over all value, these strings are awesome, and even in my house, you will find a dozen sets ready to string up! 4/5 M. Great Strings

I settled on the D'Addario XLs sometime ago. I use them on a Telecaster (actually 2 of them). Great tone and they bend well with no breaking strings. They sound fantastic when they're first put on, and tend to settle in after about a week of playing. Tone stays nice and consistent until I change them which is every 4 to 6 weeks. Top notch strings for bargain price!

I've been playing guitar for a fairly long time (13 years) and I used to work at Guitar Center, so I've tried most every type of string on the market. Reps would visit our store, and I'd go home with a new brand of strings on a semi-regular basis. Some of the higher-end strings were nice (DR and Blue Steel, for example.) But D'Addario would always run a very close second. And at 1/2-2/3 the price? It simply didn't make any sense to use anything else. In the end, you get a great sounding, long lasting string for a very reasonable price! 5/5 From Detroit (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews I've been playing guitar for a fairly long time (13 years) and I used to work at Guitar Center, so I've tried most every type of string on the market. The best strings around

After trying out a few different types of strings for my Taylor, I decided the Taylor company had the right idea after all- nothing beats Elixirs. I figure the price is reasonable because not only do they last far longer than any other strings, they also feel a lot better on your fingers. I prefer the nanowebs to the polywebs because they're slicker and the top layer on the polywebs shreds/feathers a bit over the soundhole sometimes. Overall, definitely worth it. 5/5 R. Best Strings at this price...

I have over 15 years playing experience and I would not have any other strings on my guitar.I have messed around with many different brands and even the $1/pack I found online (which I wanted to change half way through a set) but there is simply nothing else out there at this price which lasts as long, sounds as good and makes playing such a pleasure as these.I play mostly acoustic guitar in a one man show and play anywhere from 2-5 hours, though the average is around 3 hours. I finger pick but mostly strum with medium thickness picks. I tune frequently to open chords and there never is a problem.I never leave home without a few packs in my case in case a string breaks, but I rarely need them until I decide to change all my strings. They last a long time and never seem to loose their vibrant sound. 5/5 Steven McGowan (Germany) - See all my reviews, December 26, 2008

    A personal favorite

These strings from D'Addario are a personal favorite of mine. I love the EJ16 light gauge for their size and ease of use. I think the light gauge is a nice size that won't hurt your fingers, or put undue stress on your guitar. Not only that, but they sound great. Not too big or not too small! I have plenty of volume and drive for bluegrass. I love how they color code their strings on the "ball ends". To me this makes it much easier when changing strings. You don't have to worry about mixing up your strings. I've also had no problem with the fit; unlike some brands. Give these a try. I think you'll be satisfied. 5/5 Carl - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not only that, but they sound great. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 31, 2009

    I love these strings.

I'm no pro, but these strings sound phenomenal compared to the stock strings that came with my Ibanez guitar. I have already recommended these and would do it again in a heartbeat 5/5 Christopher Fox (Utah) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2010

    I LOVE cool tools!

Dont you love it when a product:-does what it claims-does it well-is a good deal?I used my PlanetWaves Pro for the first time last night. The pin puller works smoothly, and the string winder doesnt come unscrewed constantly like every other one I've owned! The componenet that really made my day was the string cutter. The 'blade' aint that sharp, but easily whacks the end of a low E string. Since there is only a little exposed metal, all of which is smooth and rounded, the risk of scratching your guitar is minimal, and the small cutting head makes it easy to trim the string very close to the peg.The Pro String Winder appears to be well built, and I suspect that it will last me quite a while. Even if if conks out in a year (not that I think it will), its a good bargain, and I'll buy another.Great product! 5/5 M. Cobb (Silicon Valley, USA) - See all my reviews, August 9, 2006

    Great idea that works well

The string winder is larger and more comfortable to hold that any of the 'cheap' winders you buy at music stores. The winder part has smooth motion and the cutter works much better than expected. I thought maybe it would bend the strings rather than cut them. But so far, it snips cleanly through the strings and gets pretty close tot he peg head. If you change strings a lot, I would also recommend to yout he Planet Waves Headstand. 5/5 B. Greenhalgh "endergreen" (UT, USA) - See all my reviews, January 15, 2007

    Very easy to use.

I love the pin puller the most. The bottom of it is very thin so that it slides under the pin very easily. This was something that was not as easy to use on my $2.50 string winder. The cutter was also fun to use. Snips very easily, but the grip is not that easy to maneuver. Still it is a very effective tool. The string winder was also very good. My hands don't move in a perfect circular motion, and no where near it either, but this seems to help me achieve that fairly well, compared to my $2.50 string winder.I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is planning on changing strings. 5/5 Y. Good nylon strings

I bought this as the back-up strings for my classical guitar, soon it founds it job on my 4-years-old daughter's 1/2 size acoustic guitar, since the steel strings on her small guitar press too hard on her little finger tips. Cut the strings shorter and mounted them, wow, the sound quality of her 1/2 size guitar became much better than before! Now I have to buy another set for myself. :) 5/5 Johnny (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
