About this book
From Summer of the Big Bachi to Gasa-Gasa Girl, Naomi Hirahara’s acclaimed novels have featured one of mystery fiction’s most unique heroes: Mas Arai, a curmudgeonly L.A. gardener, Hiroshima survivor, and inveterate gambler. Few things get Mas more excited than gambling, so when he hears about a $500,000 win–from a novelty slot machine!–he’s torn between admiration and derision. But the stakes are quickly raised when the winner, a friend of Mas’s pal G. I. Hasuike, is found stabbed to death just days later. The last thing Mas wants to do is stick his nose in someone else’s business, but at G.I.’s prodding he reluctantly agrees to follow the trail of a battered snakeskin shamisen (a traditional Okinawan musical instrument) left at the scene of the crime…and suddenly finds himself caught up in a dark mystery that reaches from the islands of Okinawa to the streets of L.A.–a world of heartbreaking memories, deception, and murder.

About this book
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The shamisen or samisen (literally three flavor strings), also called sangen (literally three strings) is a three-stringed musical instrument played with a plectrum called a bachi. The pronunciation in Japanese is usually shamisen (in western Japan, and often in Edo-period sources samisen) but sometimes jamisen when used as a suffix (e.g., Tsugaru-jamisen). The shamisen is similar in length to a guitar, but its neck is much much slimmer and does not have any frets. Its drum-like rounded rectangular body, known as the d?, is taut front and back with skin in the manner of a banjo, and amplifies the sound of the strings. The skin is usually from a dog or cat, but in the past a special type of paper was used and recently various types of plastics are being tried. On the skin of some of the best shamisen, the position of the cat's nipples can still be seen.

    Jaw-droppingly amazing;if you like Estadasphere/SC3-GET THIS!!!

First off,I'm not a fan of classical musical traditions that tend to lose integrity when paired by American pop music forms, but for stuff like GOS I can definitely make an exception! Shamisan music interlaced with technical death metal,reggae,electronica,funk,etc.--it must be heard to be believed. Shamisan adds such an interesting contrast to the music, either as background ambiance or at the forefront. The last track especially solidifies it's awesomeness as it builds up and then strides back into the same refrain as in the first song to bring the album full-circle!It's great when you have high expectations for an album and after the first minute of listening you know that the musicians: know their instruments, are having fun playing the music, and know the level that they must perform at in order for the listener to be made into a believer. 5/5 crown of indica "buckethead noir" (saint paul,mn,usa) - See all my reviews, November 15, 2009

    Reptile Records Rules!!!!!!

I picked this up as a recommendation from a friend of mine and he really talked it up and has excellent taste so I had to get it. Reptile Records puts out good stuff, I have one of their others, Hematovore and it stomps. This is a trip, it's instrumental psyche/kraut/improv/rock with the main instrument being the Japanese Shamisen guitar (like a lute). I haven't gotten to dive too far into this album yet, but I like it so far and recommend it to anyone looking for trippy creative stuff, especially fans of avant garde stuff like Circle, most kraut stuff new and old,Japanese underground expt stuff, and on that note Acid Mothers Temple. I'm surprised that AMT hadn't done this yet, but they might have and I just haven't heard it becuase I buy most of their heavy stuff. 5/5 Janet B. Very enjoyable.

Great modern shamisen. The music is very engaging. I was a little surprised it's completely instrumental but after the second listen through I was pretty hooked. It's added a nice mix to my collection of biwa, shakuhachi etc. 4/5 senninmd (TX, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) How is this disc Enhanced?

Great recording, but can someone tell me in what way this disc is Enhanced? When loading in a PC, two tracks seem to have "#" by the title, "Saiun" and "Rising". I saw a video on YouTube for "Rising", so thought these were two videos, but if they're on this disc I can't access them. strong investigative tale

Hiroshima survivor gardener Mas Arai attends a gala honoring his friend attorney George "G.I." Hasuike at Mahalo Hawaiian restaurant in Torrance, California. Meanwhile the party's host Randy Yamashiro informs G.I. that he won $500K on a Spam slot machine during their recent trip to Vegas. Mas meets the fianc?e of G.I. Juanita Gushiken and finds her charming; on the other hand he immediate dislikes Randy. When Randy and G.I. almost come to blows, Mas decides to leave. Not long afterward Juanita asks Mas for help as someone stabbed Randy to death; the prime suspect is G.I. who had plenty of motives, 500,000 of them. Mas hesitantly agrees to investigate, but though he says no to her, Juanita insists on joining him every step of the way. The only clue so far is a five-decade old battered SNAKESKIN SHAMISEN Okinawa musical instrument left near the corpse.Mas' third wonderful appearance (see SUMMER OF THE BIG BACHI and GASA-GASA GIRL) is a delightful look at a... 5/5 Harriet Klausner - See all my reviews, May 6, 2006

    A winning protagonist . . . .

This is the third outing for Los Angeles gardener Mas Arai and Hirahara generally maintains her high standards in delineating the characters of both the people of the Japanese-American subculture and their city. One of Mas's friends has won a half-million dollar jackpot on a slot machine -- which Mas, an inveterate horse and card player, ordinarily considers a sucker bet -- and the celebration thrown by another of his friends ends with the murder of the winner. Mas gets sucked into things against his will and soon is trying to figure out how an antique Okinawan musical instrument became involved, and what the crime might have to do with another death fifty years before. And then the Department of Homeland Security gets into the act. The plot doesn't seem quite as well thought out as in the first two books, but I enjoyed the interplay among the characters, . . . especially Mas's interest in a female African-Okinawan detective. 4/5 Michael K. Best in the Mas Arai Series So Far

The other three reviews have done a good job of summarizing the plot in this book. I would just like to add that I have read all three of the Mas Arai mysteries and felt that this by far was the best. The characters were the most realistic, the writing style has evolved and to me flows the best of the three, and the book itself was pretty intriguing. It had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Having grown up in the area and being a Sansei (third-generation Japanese-American), the book held special interest for me because of the characters, locale, and situations. But even without this, it is a book that is worthwhile reading. I'd recommend it unhesitatingly. 4/5 monkuboy (Temple City, CA United States) - See all my reviews, April 28, 2008

    Music that mesmerizes

I got this CD 4 years ago in a music shop in Istanbul,Turkey. Its my first CD on Japanese chamber music. What captures me is that the CD features music from some of the main musical instruments from Japanese chamber music, namely the shamisen, shakuhachi and the koto, which is quite a good deal. To be truthful, all these instruments actually originated in China, but got to Japan during the Tang Dynasty. One of them, the Shakuhachi (known as 'Chi Ba' in Chinese), is now a lost art in China, and is frequently thought of as being the same as the Chinese bamboo flute. My favourite track is track #4, entitled Hoshun(meaning Spring Time). The music is just hauntingly beautiful. The music of the shakuhachi and the koto do not compete for dominance but just complement and blend with each other so well. The music is simply mesmerizing. I would also like to mention track #2: Tsuru no Sugomori, which means Tenderness of Cranes, a solo performance by the Shakuhachi. The musician actually uses the... 4/5 Caleb Poh (Republic of Singapore) - See all my reviews This review is from: Art of Japanese Koto, Shakuhachi and Shamisen (Audio CD) I got this CD 4 years ago in a music shop in Istanbul,Turkey. Its my first CD on Japanese chamber music.
