  Fantastic power trio

  Every time I pull out this disc to give it a listen, I'm floored by the guitar pyrotechnics and explosive rhythm section.   Almost Great

  Danish band moved to Britain with British bassist /folk singer Mac Macleod for whom Donovan wrote 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' hence the band's name. MacLeod recorded two songs with Hurdy Gurdy, and moved on.1970 CBS release is hard rocking psych with servicable to good English vocals with excellent psych guitar in tight hard rock songs (Cream, Yardbirds, May Blitz, maybe Hendrix).   A book that stays with you

  I wasn't sure I was going to write until I saw uiop45's review. I as well am originally from Boston and was introduced to Seibles when I was in High School at a writers conference in NH, at Breadloaf. I would be very interested to know if it was at this same conference that we both heard Seibles read and I as well have had his poems stick with me. I have bought all the rest of his books and have waited for a new one to appear (which finally has). Great poems, beautiful, lyrical phrases, honest and clear. Even now, years after having read it I can remember the end of the line quoted by the above reviewer "hearing a name sung quietly behind you all day" Great stuff, sticks with you 5/5 0, April 5, 2000

  Ok, but manual movement

  Its ok, I bought it because I always used to rescue old music box movements and watch them work. Having onepermanently in clear plastic is nice.   Great for kids and music box fans

  Just About the Best, Only, Whatever

  ...example of hurdy gurdy used in serious music composition, in this case, from the Baroque period. I've never heard of the composers before, but no big deal. There are two 'gurdy players alongside a harpsichord and bassoon, and a viola gamba (played between knees like a cello) so it makes for small ensemble sound to highlight the gurdies well. Also, one plays melody while other utilizes the buzzing bridge or chien for rhythm effect. I've heard Mozart's father Leopold, Haydn and others composed pieces for the hurdy gurdy, but where to find them? This is as good as you'll find of a whole disc that gives the instrument the formal treatment it earned hundreds of years ago. 5/5 William B.   The hurdy-gurdy has long been thought of as a folk instrument, and this is a wonderful example of use in baroque music, and was quite popular for a time in that era....(then improvements on the violin and piano-forte et al rendered a lot of the old instruments obsolete). Anyway, this CD has 33 pieces by Dugue, Buterne, Dupuits, Naudot and a few others.   One of the greatest from 1968

  Donovan is an artist of great individuality. His work is superbly imaginative, and I rank him among my favorite artists of all time--any genre. While "progressive" is a word often flippantly tossed about today--describing seemingly anything but the ultra-mundane--Donovan's music has always seemed truly progressive and original to me. He understood the tasteful use of color, and its effect, in both his music and his lyrics. His albums from '66 through '68 are monuments of the psychedelic era--mystical, enchanting...irresistible. There are two that stand out in my mind as being absolutely essential, masterpieces in every respect and worthy of being heralded along with the greatest albums rock has ever produced: SUNSHINE SUPERMAN and this glorious one. (I hope that got your attention.)We begin with the title cut--hushed at first, but when that lead guitar strikes and bends, the drums kick in, and (look out!) Donovan gets heavy.   The Hurdy Gurdy Man comes singing songs of love

  The idea that Donovan Leitch was to Britain what Bob Dylan was to America was always an unfair comparison to make and you have to think if Scottish folk-pop singer's first name had started with any letter other than "D" he might have been saved the analysis. Then again, anybody who cannot listen to the music these two were putting out in the 1960s and not be able to see their music as being opposites is simply not paying attention. Donovan was always the cheerful optimist, while Dylan on a good day was merely being realistic instead of pessimistic. That was just in terms of their lyrics, because once you got to the music Dylan was defined by stark guitar playing sometimes augmented by a harmonica in the style of Woody Guthrie while Donovan was helping to define the psychedelic sound.In 1965 Donovan was a regular on the television music show "Ready, Steady, Go!" and then had his début single, the folk song "Catch the Wind."   Another Fine Donovan Re-Issue!

  "Hurdy Gurdy Man" was Donovan's 1968 album, built up around the strong singles "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Jennifer Juniper". Like Donovan's other Micky Most produced albums this one touches upon a great varity of musical styles and instrumentations, with tasteful and original arrangements by John Cameron. Some of the more rocking tunes were arranged by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin - e.g. the stunningly build-up title track, starting with Donovan's silent humming joined by his acoustic guitar and building up towords its climax with electric guitars and drums. The overall sound-quality of this re-mastered version is great!"Jennifer Juniper" is a beautifully arranged pop-ballad featuring both oboe and harp.The album features a handful catchy free and easy tunes among which "The Entertaining of a Shy Girl"and "The Sun is a very Magic Fellow" stand out!A couple of the droning tunes, combing traditional Eastern sounds with Celtic sounds, may sound a little... 4/5 Morten Vindberg (Denmark) - See all my reviews, October 7, 2005
