ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-WT 10.1-Inch White Netbook

topbook99 ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-WT 10.1-Inch White Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) Review.

Elegant little travel companion2010-02-12By D. BaconThe overall build of this netbook feels very solid and keyboard is firm, no flex. I love this keyboard, touch typing is no problem. This is a very personal preference though; you should try out the keyboard on any netbook before you buy it.
Cover and palm rests have textured finish that hides fingerprints. My husband asked, Is that carbon fiber?, and thought it looked cool. The textured surface also provides a better grip than a shiny surface.
The Synaptics trackpad works great. Two-finger scrolling works smoothly, which is good because the up/down keys on the keyboard are pretty small. I dont use the trackpad rocker button very much, I just use tap gestures to simulate the left and right button clicks.
Im really glad I went for the matte non-glare screen. It is easier to read in less-than-ideal lighting conditions while traveling. The 10.1 screen is clear and sharp, and easy to read at 1024600, no squinting. The screen swings back and down when open, so that it sits low; its good to have a low profile when working on an airplane tray.
Windows 7 starter edition ran without lagging, but I can live without all the extras provided by Asus. So, having an extra upgrade license handy, I promptly did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium on the C: partition, leaving the D: data partition, the ExpressGate partition, and the restore partition intact. I was able to download all necessary drivers and utilities from the Asus support website. Windows 7 Home Premium runs amazingly well with only 1 GB of ram! Im going to wait and see if I really want to upgrade to 2 GB.
I was concerned that the wireless card was only 802.11g, and not 802.11n, but I really dont notice any difference when surfing the web. I was also concerned that the webcam was only 0.3 megapixel (640480), but it looks fine and works well with Skype, as does the built-in microphone.
I agree with others that the connector on the A/C adapter is very thin, but it seems strong enough. Id rather have the pin on the A/C adapter break (which I can replace for a few bucks) than the power receptacle on the motherboard.
When Im working from home via VPN and Remote Desktop, I like to connect my netbook to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, and wired ethernet. The EEE PC 1001p had no trouble with the 12801024 resolution on my monitor. The wired ethernet and USB keyboard work fine. Logitech doesnt provide a Windows 7 driver for my old bluetooth mouse, but I just put the netbook bluetooth into discovery mode and it found my mouse with no problem. Windows 7 had the bluetooth mouse drivers I needed built in.
I inserted a 256 MB SD card into the memory card slot and it was recognized instantly. Im trying out the Windows Ready-Boost feature with this SD card, but since most of the things I do are not memory intensive (surfing the web, remote desktop, VNC), and its a fairly small memory card, I havent noticed much of a difference.
It would have been nice if Asus had included a neoprene slipcase for this netbook. I recommend the Case Logic VLS-110 Sleeve for 7-Inch to 10-Inch Netbooks.
The 1001p has everything I wanted in a netbook: good performance, a reasonable weight, nice screen and keyboard, slick design, and a great price.

Excellent Quality! Surprising Features.2010-01-26By Ron Gonzalez (Boston)I was absolutely surprised by how well fabricated this little netbook is.
The Quality is excellent, the keyboard, takes almost zero getting used to from a full size keyboard. I am typing this review from the unit itself, and I can type to 95% full speed.
    Most surprising in order:
    1. Speed! I wouldnt have imagined with a gig of ram and an N450 ATOM that windows 7 would run this fast. My wireless downloads come in as fast as my athlon multicore desktop. IE launches quickly, as well as other applications. Windows 7 Starter runs superbly. I dont imagine that a CAD CAM or any heavy duty graphical app will run fast on this at all but this is a netbook, and it is surprisingly snappy.
    2. Component Quality: I was so happy to find that the touchpad is a synaptics brand touchpad, everyone knows that the synaptics touchpad is the best and the driver software allows you all the advanced touchpad features.
    3. USB Ports: I can hookup a Smart Card Reader, a USB Logic Analyzer, and a 4gb Sandisk cruzer all at the same time. I imagine that if you owned a bluetooth mouse or a bluetooth smart phone you can also get that up and running simultaneously.
    Overall, an amazingly capable netbook.
One more thing, the aesthetics were just what I was expecting, it is a sharp looking netbook.
    Good Job asus, 5/5!

Eye-Catching, All Day Netbook2010-01-28By Kevin E. JohnsonI really like the Asus 1001p. I am typing this review on it and the non-chiclet keyboard feels big and spacious. Very easy to type on. I...

2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser Offers Trail Teams and Audio Systems

2011 Toyota FJ CruiserNew Trail Teams Special Edition in Army Green
New Audio Systems, Including Available JBL Premium System
    Standard Locking Rear Differential
Improved Visibility and Rear Seat Access
Standard iPod Connectivity and XM Satellite Radio
TORRANCE, Calif. -- The Toyota FJ Cruiser offers a new trail-oriented Trail Teams Special Edition Package each model year; for 2011, the Trail Teams Special Edition is distinguished by a distinct Army Green exterior color, special green fabric trimmed seating and interior trim and a standard Off-Road Package.

The FJ Cruiser uniquely melds the brands off-road performance legacy with distinct heritage design in a modern SUV. Additional changes for 2011 bolster the models off-road bona fides while enhancing interior comfort and convenience. A locking rear differential is now standard with the six-speed manual transmission; it remains available as an option with the automatic transmission.

The 2011 FJ Cruiser offers improved passenger side walk-in, with a front passenger seat that can fold further forward. New folding headrests on the outboard rear seats help to improve rearward visibility, and heater performance is improved. The available 17-inch alloy wheel design is new.

The new standard audio system features an AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, six speakers, XM Radio (includes 90-day trial subscription), auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology. The steering wheel now integrates audio system and Bluetooth controls for added ease of use. A JBL 10-speaker premium audio system, including sub woofer, is newly optional (standard on Trail Teams Special Edition).

    Trail Teams Special Edition
The 2011 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Special Edition projects a tough, slightly menacing look in its Army Green exterior color, accentuated by black bumpers, front grille and door handles. The look is backed up by Trail Teams capability. Under-hood, a cyclone pre-air cleaner (standard on all models) is effective at trapping sand and dirt and is easy to clean. The standard Off-Road Package (optional for the base model) beefs up chassis performance with trail-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, rear differential lock and the active traction control (A-TRAC) system, engine, fuel tank and transfer cases, skid plates, rock rails, plus Toyota Racing Development (TRD) alloy wheels and BFG All-Terrain tires with wheel locks.

The Special Edition also preps the FJ Cruisers body and interior for trail driving. The power side mirrors feature Illumination markers, and the auto-dimming rear-view mirror integrates a backup camera monitor. Green fabric seat inserts and door trim complement the exterior styling. The water resistanct seats and rubber-type floor and rear deck make it easy to clean the trail out of the FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Special Edition, while 12V, 100W and 120V, 400W outlets enable the driver to keep plugged in to civilization when necessary.

In addition to the standard JBL 10-speaker audio system, the Special Edition comes ready for road and trail with a floating ball type multi-information display, remote keyless entry, cruise control; rear privacy glass and rear wiper. The final touch is a Trail Team exterior badge.

    Performance and Efficiency
The FJ Cruiser gained a more powerful and more efficient engine for the 2010 model year, along with a change to regular-grade fuel to help reduce operating costs. The DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine is equipped with dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i -- variable phasing for both the intake and exhaust cams) and produces 260 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The broad torque curve facilitates easy cruising on or off-road. The FJ Cruiser meets the stringent LEV II/Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions certification.

The FJ Cruiser 4x4 offers a choice between a six-speed manual transmission and an electronically shifted five-speed automatic transmission; the 4x2 model is equipped exclusively with the five-speed automatic. The automatic transmission varies the shifting pattern based on road conditions and driver input. A Flex Lock-Up feature allows the clutch in the torque converter to maintain a half-engaged position, enhancing fuel efficiency and increasing the lock-up clutch's operational range. The driver can manually shift the automatic transmission using a console-mounted, gate-type shift lever. The gearshift position is also displayed in the instrument panel.

    Capability, Handling and Ride
The FJ Cruiser's two-speed transfer case provides a 2.566 low range. With the manual transmission, the transfer case uses a TORSEN limited-slip center differential with a locking feature and distributes the engine's...

The Intense Madness Of Your Pop-Culture Devotion [Past Fashion]

  • Jul 12, 2010 from jezebel(Jezebel) in Entertainment
jezebel A few weeks ago, I asked our readers to send in pictures of themselves showing their obsessive devotion to everything from bands to books, and naturally, they delivered. Inside, a roundup of your fellow readers amazing and often hilarious contributions:From commenter Spike49: I wish I could tell you these were actually "past" fashion, but I would be lying. These are of me, my sister and friend less than two years ago at the NKOTB concert in San Jose. The t-shirt I am wearing- I'm the jackass in the hot pink arm warmers- is an original from 6th grade that I never got rid of. My sister got her yellow one off ebay. My friend found a sheet set on ebay and had her designer friend make her a dress out of them. There were 4 others with us, and we all looked ridiculous. We honestly thought a ton of people would have done it up like we had, but we were very, very wrong. NOBODY else embraced the absurdity of it all, they were all totally dolled up like they were waiting for Joey to see them from across the arena and take them home (which let's be honest, is the real absurd behavior). We are not an easily embarrassed bunch so we had a blast and everybody wanted to take our pictures. The real tragedy is that there are no pics of my denim jacket that I wore that night COVERED in NKOTB buttons, tiny ones, giant ones, the works."
From commenter cosmictuesday: "This photo was my submission to the Mad Men photo contest last summer. I didn't win, but I was in the top ten for a coupla days before the winners were announced."
From commenter Bye June: "My friends and I were about 14 when these were taken. We went to Warped Tour mostly for Good Charlotte, and spent a good part of our day waiting around for/stalking the band. It paid off and here's the proof. It doesn't look terribly superfan-ish, I don't think, but when Joel threw a water bottle out into the crowd, we all dove for it. My friend caught it and it sat on her shelf for a couple of years before being thrown out with the recyclables. Oh, and identities have been hidden to protect the innocent/mildly embarrassed."
From reader Nicola: "I have had a few major obsessions in the past and have the photos to prove it, for years in High School I was obsessed with Marilyn Monroe, I read over 30 books on her, saw all the films even "A Ticket to Tomahawk" where she had the illustrious part of "Chorus Girl #4" I had books, bags, and pictures, dear God so many pictures decorating my walls."
From reader Tazzy: "This is a nice little fan tattoo that spans across the back between the shoulder blades. It represents the love of Avenged Sevenfold. The roman numerals inside the bat wings actually spell out A7X. My daughter designed it."
From commenter Bunnya69: "I am a HUGE Linkin Park fan and in 2007 I got to see them for the very first time. As a bonus I got to meet them, where I asked lead singer Chester Bennington to sign my arm below the LP logo that I had tattooed a few months earlier. He did and for the rest of the concert I covered it over with a wrist band I had. The next day I had it permanently inked where I can always look upon it and remember what an awesome time I had."
From reader Helen: "I take a yearly trip to the University of Georgia in Athens with my dad to catch a game. I didn't attend the school, although my dad did, but I'm a huge fan of their football team. In this photo I'm wearing at least 4 pieces of UGA themed clothing, have a pass for the press box, and am sitting on the back of a bulldog sculpture. I have pics like this going back years."
From reader Patricia: "This photograph documents a night in November 2009, when a group of college girls went on a date with Robert Pattinson. A Robert Pattinson life-sized and made out of cardboard. For the opening weekend of the second Twilight movie, my friends and I met up and put body glitter all over faces (so we can sparkle like vampires!) and headed off to the movie theatre, where we got so many picture requests with Robert Pattinson. I'm on the far left here with four of my friends, joined with two preteen Twihards, one very inappropriate little boy, and of course, the one and only Robert Pattinson. Cut to earlier this summer, when Jezebel did a story about the girl brought a Robert Pattinson life-sized cutout as her prom date. I showed it to my friends, and we all agreed that our was much, much better. I mean, we bought him his own ticket, and all."
From reader Hannah: "We put on all our Argentina gear that we'd purchased that day on the street (note my necklace made from a one peso moneda) and were wandering around like complete clowns. At least one of us is actually Argentine. Too bad we were eliminated :("
From commenter AnnVeal: "Once upon a time there was a Jezebel commenter named Ann Veal. Ann Veal loved Avatar: The Last Airbender a little much. So when she heard there was a live-action movie, she rejoiced. She could practically taste the awesome. (It tasted like chocolate frosting and Sokka)."
    "She followed...

The Countess of Stanlein restored

Creator: Nicholas Delbanco | Music - 2001-08-30

Delbanco (English language and literature, U. of Michigan) traces the progression of the repair of the famous Stradivarius cello of 1707 that belongs to cellist Bernard Greenhouse.

Publisher: Verso Books

About this book
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Antonio Stradivari of Cremona (1644'Č ;1737) was the noblest of bowed wooden stringed instrument makers. His work remains the Platonic ideal and template for contemporary 'luthiers'; present day technology may hope to match but not alter the standard of such craftsmanship. Extant examples of the master's instruments are numerous'Č ;but cellos from the 'great period' (1707'Č ;1720) are relatively few. The Countess of Stanlein-ex Paganini Stradivarius violoncello of 1707 is one of the best known in this exalted group. It has been copied often, physically dissected, discovered in a barrow on its way to a municipal dump, owned by Paganini, and applauded in hall after hall. Today the 'Stanlein' belongs to the cellist Bernard Greenhouse. In his eighties and semi-retired, he determined 'to give back something of value to the world of music that had given him so much.' In September 1998 he deposited the cello in the New York atelier of virtuoso luthier Rene Morel. The craft of instrument repair remains rooted in tradition; its practitioners belong to a quasi-mediaeval guild. Morel began a complete restoration of the instrument, a painstaking and meticulous enterprise that took him nearly two years. This book tracks that process'Č ;the intricacies, anxieties and pleasures that precede the cello's triumphal unveiling at the World Cello Congress in June 2000. Its subject is a work of art that must prove nonetheless functional, for the Countess of Stanlein-ex Paganini Stradivarius is only itself when played.

A weird and wonderful new play - an inexpressibly moving theatrical fable about love, loss and the pleasures and pains of memory." - The New York Times"EXHILARATING!!
