About this book
This resource considers the Baroque cello's revival as part of the period instrument movement from the viewpoints of over forty cellists from three generations and four luthiers who have worked on period cellos. What emerges is a nuanced and detailed picture of the cello in the past and present and the varied instruments now played under the label "Baroque cello." Period instruments played with appropriate techniques have become a major presence in classical music in recent decades. For the cello, which changed substantially between the end of the sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries, it is challenging to describe specific traits for certain time periods, let alone how it was played in those periods. By chronicling the searches of over forty top cellists in England, Europe, and North America, the author goes far in revealing the great variety of forms that exist. This is the first study in which the revival of a single period instrument has been considered in such qualified detail and will be of great interest to musicologists, luthiers, and anyone interested in string history.

About this book
Translated from the French by Florence W. Seder, Dimitry Markevitch concludes his preface, or Prelude as he calls it: "History, fact and personal anecdote blend here to provide a complete story of the instrument. May this book entertain you, help you to know the cello to the fullest, and lead you to love it as I do." Reading the book confirms that he has amply accomplished his aims. His qualifications for doing so are of the highest. Markevitch is a performer of considerable note and a teacher at both the Ecole Normale de Musique and Conservatoire Serge Rachmaninoff in Paris. He also has a keen interest in musicology and has edited many works for publication. The book is divided into three parts: "The Instrument," tracing the history of the cello and cello bow from earliest times, "The Performers," anecdotes of historical cellists plus a long section on Markevitch's friend Piatigorsky, and "Great Moments for the Cello," development of cello repertoire.

    Excellent for the price

Let me start off by saying that I have absolutely no experience playing cello, so I don't have a lot of knowledge of the instrument to compare it to.PROS:That being said, I think this is an amazing cello for the price. Considering that most "beginner" cellos in a music store start out around $1,000, finding a cello that sounds good at all for $200 is great. It did make a weird squeaky sound when I played the G string while holding down on the fret, but I started making sure I kept the rosin residue wiped off the string, switched to rather than the rosin that came with it, and started using the bow like I was taught in ... 5/5 Briana Clark "Brelywi" (Hampton Roads, VA) - See all my reviews, January 13, 2012

    Great-Amazing

This cello I ordered Sunday evening along with a book and it arrived today (Wednesday). I got it out and played, I very enjoyed it and it is well worth your money. I have enjoyed playing and can't wait to play even more on it. I recommend that if you don't want to spend upwards of like 3,000 - 10,000 and don't know where to start, This is a excellent thing to start out on. Also in the future you could always upgrade to something professional. 5/5 Andrew Kaltt - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Just as ordered

This is the book my cello teacher recommended. So I knew the entire product before ordering it. It's aimed at children but at age 65, I find it's an efficient way of getting started! 5/5 Michele Fairfield (Lacolle, Quebec) - See all my reviews, September 22, 2010

    Well set up

This method does a very good job of introducing new techniques one at a time without focusing too strongly on the fact that you're learning a technique. The little folk songs are enjoyable and pleasant to listen to a million times over. As a new Suzuki mother and longtime musician myself, I was a little concerned, but have been very impressed so far. I would definitely suggest this method to parents of younger children. I think that the songs are easy enough for a 5yr old, yet engaging enough for a teenager. 5/5 J. YOU REALLY NEED THE CD TO GO ALONG WITH THE BOOK

If you order the book by itself, I could see where one would be disappointed. However, with the CD the book is excellent. The book starts with a couple of simple exercises on the open A and D, then adds new notes with the fingering labeled. Very helpful for a beginner! Almost immediately one plays, and stick with me here, Twinkle Twinkle, HOWEVER, there are 4 somewhat rapid bowing patterns used, so right away you are learning rhythm and timing and fast bowing - all very useful things! In addition, it gets your ears used to the open string interval. You can tell by ear if those 2 strings are in tune. Starting on the next page, more simple melodies are introduced, and quickly one learns to count the beat and take repeats. Turn the page and you start using dynamics - crescendo, decresendo, ritard, etc. The songs are kind of fast, so you learn right away that you can't drag your feet, you have to keep up. This is real life in an orchestra - you have to count the beat, respect... 5/5 Mufkins (Sunny SoCal) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I am currently learning to play cello on my own.I was surprised at the quality of the cello for the price,(the bow was very cheap and warped). The tone is awesome, when I play a song the tone sounds exactly like the instrument on the instructional C-D.I Would highly recommend thepurchase of: A new bow, better rosin, the strings included with the cello are just fine.Overall I am very happy with my purchase, and wouldrecommend it to anyone.Keep in mind it is a beginner cello,a great start for someone just starting out, without spending alot of money. 5/5 BROTHER RAT FINK - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fantastic value

This cello is perfect for the price I paid. Though I understand one reviewer received no cello rosin at all, my cello came with everything it said it would. I even got a violin tuning pipe, not that it is that much help. I agree that the bow is slightly warped (looking on it straight down)but that has not hindered my playing. A great deal for anyone looking for a first cello of her own, and totally worth it. 5/5 K. Volk - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great buy!

Beautiful cello. It sounds great. I got everything I was suppose to get.. stand works great.. Everything was perfect excet for the bow.. It was really warped... And I really hate the case.. it offers little protection... basically it protects from scratches, cosmetic stuff.. which is the least of my worries for a practicing cello for a newbie.. I wouldn't let the crappy bow and cheapo bag be a reason to not buy this.. For the very low price that this is, it's a fantastic deal.. I do have a hard time keeping it tuned, but I don't know if that's my fault or if it's the cello..My story is, I didn't know I needed to put the rosin on the bow.. first time I had ever even held a bow! I was trying to tighten the strings to just see what it basically sounded like.. it was HORRIBLE! So I'd tighten the strings, rub the bow across it. over and over.. until, SNAP!!!!!!!!! The string slapped across my fingers.. I got "b" slapped by my own cello.. cut me and my other finger had a welt... 4/5 J. McDonald "JandB" - See all my reviews, September 15, 2011

    Quality

Overall, I am pleased with my new cello, because it came with strings, end pin protector, cello rosin, cello cover, and French bow. I was surprised I did not find any packaged extra strings. I was also surprised to see that some hair came out from the bow very easily, which almost led me to believe that this bow needed re-hairing. It seems that this instrument can produce a good resonating forward sound, which at times have to control by backing the note dynamics off. I was not able to find a logo indicating where this cello was originally made at. The bridge was slightly too high. Because my original plan was to use the instrument in my church only and not professionally, this full-size instrument works very well with me. Thank you! 4/5 Daniel Tsukamoto (Clinton Township, MI) - See all my reviews, March 4, 2009

    Beautiful Cello--bad strings

What a gorgeous cello! Nice "practice" cello---but it immediately needed new strings, and the pegs won't hold. We're still working on it and after new strings plus some peg dope (thank you Sharmusic.com), the pegs still won't hold the tuned strings. Once we get that settled, tho, it ought to play very nicely. 2/5 Charmaine Mankey (Sunny Southern California) - See all my reviews, June 5, 2010

Review by an owner of two Snark clip-on tuners

"Tunes Tighter So You Sound Better."I'm impressed with the Snark tuners. I own the Blue SN-1 for guitars and the Red SN-2 with extended range and a built in mic for all instruments. Better than I thought they'd be. Least important is the finish, but the finish is beautiful. Much better than any of the company pictures I've seen on websites. The blue and red colors are an intense rare metallic color. The Snark only weighs about 1.5 ounces with a very expertly made clamp with rubber gripping jaws. The lower jaw hinges allowing it to fit any contour. I have an Ovation with the angled head stock. The Snark clips right on and stays there. And with a ball socket on each end of the curved mounting post that connects the clamp to the face we're talking 360 degress maneuvering making the Snark perfectly adjustable for most any situation.Comes complete with a CR2032 Lithium 3 volt battery. This is the same kind that many computers use for the clock battery. They never seem to wear... 5/5 Stanley B. Huggard - See all my reviews, February 11, 2011

Best clip-on tuner I've ever used!

After trying several clip-on tuners for my guitars, banjos, and mandolins, this is definitely the best I've ever used. It works very well on all three instruments. It's accurate, the lighted display is very visible with bright colors for flat, sharp, and right-on. The head of the display swivels easily in any direction for easy viewing. It also allows tuning by both vibration or sound. The red color of the tuner's exterior makes it easy to find in my gig bag but is not obnoxiously bright when placed on the headstock. It's so good I bought two. Delivery came in about two or three days by standard shipping. 5/5 Patrick Murphree (Los Altos, CA, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) My Review

I bought this just to see if it would work as the reviews say. I was surprised that it really does work. I even ordered another one. Just clamp it and forget it. I use it on my ukuleles, from the soprano, concert, tenor to the baritone it works on all of them. I also like the fact that it has a metronome, no sound but just a little heart that flashes, which you can set the tempo also. I like it better that the Lanikai Chromatic & Ukulele LUT-1 Tuner. I like the fact that it is lighted so you can see the screen in low light settings. Try it you will like it.I also wanted to add that by using this you can also learn the fret board. Just choose a fret and strum or pick the string and it will show you what the note is.I will post more later on after I have used it some more and after I see how long it holds up to everyday use.. 5/5 Keithmj "Noodj" (Saint Petersburg, Fl) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great clarity. Easy application.

This rosin has been recommended to me by my violin teacher and I am very happy with the results of using it. The consistency of the rosin is softer then other brands I tried, and thus makes the application onto the bow hair much easier. The rosin stays on the hair for quite a long time, and treated bow produces very clean sound, without any harshness or hisses. Residue fall out onto the violin varnish seems less messy then from some stock rosins I tried. Wrapping the rosin in cloth/sponge is a nice touch - no plastic box to rattle inside your violin case, and your hands stay clean while handling it. 5/5 Boruta Di Lira (NJ, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great product

I tend to use softer rosins in low humidity settings, and lighter rosins in high humidity. Hill dark rosin works wonderfully, especially in winter, when heated rooms are often very low in humidity. The rosin enables the hairs to grip the strings without being sticky, and gives a beautiful clean sound. If you're experiencing problems with playing in a low-humidity setting, this is the first product to try. 5/5 classicalgeek "raising geekiness to an art form!" Not too bad. I was expecting it to be a little softer, but it is way better than the original rosin that I got with my violin. Compact and well built tuner-metronome.

This tuner/metronome is very well built and has a 12 note refrence. It works very well with my violin and I carry it with me to class and when I practice. The metronome has a loud beat. The tuner is loud so you can hear it over what you are playing. It has a large screen and is very easy to use. I recommend this to anyone that plays a string instrument. 5/5 A. maxon (eastern tn) - See all my reviews, September 1, 2005

Not the best tuner or metronome, but perhaps the best for the price.

I've always had difficulty finding tuners with adequate response, and this one was actually a downgrade from the OT-12 (my favourite pocket-sized tuner), but it surprised me by working better than any previous combined metronome-tuner while not costing much more. The response rate is not adjustable, but sits at about a medium (there has to be at least a second of sustenance, but not more than two if you're steady). The precision is about as good as most will ever need, although it's dubiously delineated between -3 and +3 cents. The rest of the spectrum to fifty is clear-cut (it is fully digital, for better or for worse). The accuracy is also as good as could be asked for at its price-range, but not great - you may want to let it cycle a couple times for the more troublesome notes or if you're of the end-inward school of tuning. There are no temperament settings, but very few musicians will miss that option. There is an input for contact mics, though the impedance choice is... 5/5 Mark Gilbert (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews, November 11, 2006

    Sensitive mic

This tuner has been a wonderful aid in tuning our violins and cellos. I've found the mic to be too sensitive in our setting as it picks up my young children's voices while I'm trying to tune an instrument. I will be purchasing the pick-up mic accessory in hopes that it will insulate against the background noise. If you are able to tune your instrument in private, then this should not be a problem for you. Also, the tiny flip-out stand doesn't seem to provide adequate support when placed vertically on uneven surfaces like, say various surfaces of a cluttered piano. However, the pick-up mic should eliminate the need to position the tuner optimally in front of the instrument. This is less likely to be a legitimate drawback of the tuner design itself, and more likely to be one of my way of using it. In any event, I cannot imagine not using an electronic tuner for these or any other reason. It is truly a gift for those who play strings. 4/5 Ich liebe cello (Seattle area) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great software but...

I love this software. I'm a pretty crappy guitarist who decided to go back to the basics and learn some music theory (which I'm doing via the "absolutely understand guitar" DVD set by Scotty West -- I recommend that product as well -- the presenter has a tendency to ramble and excessively repeat himself but ultimately the material is solid and a lot of things are starting to click so it was worth hanging in there). Anyway, this software is a perfect complement to your music theory studies. I think that unless you're just lucky to be born with a natural talent, you're going to need some dictation of intervals, chords, scales, and rhythm to atune your ear to how they sound. Playing it on your own instrument isn't as effective because you can't help using your eyes and fingers as a crutch. With this software, you have nothing but your ears to find the answer. Some small nits to pick, which I'm writing here hoping that emedia will read this and include in its next upgrade:... 5/5 demago (Singapore) - See all my reviews This review is from: EarMaster 5 (CD-ROM) I love this software. I bought this at the San Francisco Apple Store

I think it says something that Apple sells this music software at their San Francisco Apple store. That indicates EarMaster Pro has gone through some serious vetting, as Apple does not sell junk. Apple's shelf space for selling software is small. Except for those days when there isn't enough time or I'm too busy, I use the EarMaster Pro software every day for about a half hour. I've been using Ear Master Pro for about four months and am nearly half way through the exercises. EarMaster Pro has an online forum which has been helpful and responsive when I've had questions. In a good way, I have found the EarMaster Pro exercises beyond the starting "easy" ones to be brutally hard. I consider EarMaster Pro to be a program for music majors or for serious musical hobbyists such as myself who are highly motivated and have a strong background in musical harmony and musical theory. The more advanced exercises are so subtle that I ended up (with the help of... 5/5 Robert D. Glover Jr. "robert-g-near-nyc" (Linden, NJ USA) - See all my reviews, December 13, 2009

Flexible, wide ranging exercises and excellent support

I originally posted this review for EarMaster and not EarMaster Pro. I have the Pro version so I am adding the same review here.I like the flexibility of this training software -- the ability to create my own exercises. I use the Tutor to narrow down issues and then construct my own exercises to further focus drills. Of the software I tried this one also has a fairly complete results report. I think this is important because it allows you to overcome your own sense of where weaknesses are when your own sense is incorrect. The only issue I've found is with some of the rhythm drills that depend on the platform on which the software is running to be properly responsive. I find the responsiveness too unpredictable and therefor some of the drills like the rhythm imitation less useful. I do not think this is the fault of EM 5 or any other training software that tries to drill rhythmic input. It's more a platform issue.Another very positive thing about this... 5/5 L.
