The Adventures of a Cello

Creator: Carlos Prieto, Elena C. Murray, Álvaro Mutis | Music - 2011-02-01

The gate agent asked for some identification of Miss Chelo Prieto, and smiled when she saw it was a cello. “How old is she?” she asked. “This year,” I said “ exactly 279 years old.” Her reply was immediate: “ok, then we will give her ...

About this book
In 1720, Antonio Stradivari crafted an exquisite work of art--a cello known as the Piatti. Over the next three centuries of its life, the Piatti cello left its birthplace of Cremona, Italy, and resided in Spain, Ireland, England, Italy, Germany, and the United States. In 1978, the Piatti became the musical soul mate of world-renowned cellist Carlos Prieto, with whom it has given concerts around the world. In this delightful book, Mr. Prieto recounts the adventurous life of his beloved "Cello Prieto," tracing its history through each of its previous owners from Stradivari in 1720 to himself. He then describes his noteworthy experiences of playing the Piatti cello, with which he has premiered some eighty compositions. In this part of their mutual story, Prieto gives a concise summary of his own remarkable career and his relationships with many illustrious personalities, including Igor Stravinsky, Dmitry Shostakovich, Pablo Casals, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriel García Márquez. A new epilogue, in which he describes recent concert tours in Moscow, Siberia, and China and briefer visits to South Korea, Taiwan, and Venezuela, as well as recent recitals with Yo-Yo Ma, brings the story up to 2009.To make the story of his cello complete, Mr. Prieto also provides a brief history of violin making and a succinct review of cello music from Stradivari to the present. He highlights the work of composers from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, for whose music he has long been an advocate and principal performer. This book includes a CD of fourteen recordings by Carlos Prieto, including works by J. S. Bach, Dmitry Shostakovich, Astor Piazzolla, and Eugenio Toussaint.

    The recorded cello:

For the right person this may be a treasure. However I was looking for some cello music for my wife and did not realize this was composed of actual recordings from records complete with very scratchy background like a 1940's victrola. I did not see the listen option when I ordered "The Recorded Cello" The merchant requests that I pay the return shipping which I think is a fair request. 2/5 khousti - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fills an empty niche

CPML is an attempt to bring the complex and daunting task of learning to play the cello down to earth and approachable for adult beginners. Unlike the typical beginning cello book, CPML contain easy-to-read explanatory text matched with simple, short, playable examples that illustrate the point of the text. The target audience for the book is a typical adult non-musician who might feel intimidated by technical-looking cello methods and etude books, but who, through life experience, is already familiar with many of the melodies and fragments of classics that make up the book. The learner can relate the point in the text to the already-familiar example; and then perform the example.I don't know of another book like this one for cellists with this mix of adult-beginner orientation, conversational style, widely-known examples from popular culture, a demonstration CD, and introductory discussions of concepts such as relaxation, dynamics, factors in choice of bowings and... 5/5 Terry "Terry" (SoCal, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cello Playing for Music Lovers: A Self-Teaching Method (Spiral-bound) CPML is an attempt to bring the complex and daunting task of learning to play the cello down to earth and approachable for adult beginners. Good book, but not for everybody

Beware of enthusiastic comments. When I bought the book I expected that some of the comments would be overrated. My fears where a gentle underestimation. After reading a few chapters, I felt that I was "hungry". There was not enough advice inside. In particular, bowing advice is not sufficient. My professor gave me basic bowing advices even in my third lesson, which do not appear in the book. Advice on changing string, like fingers flexion / extension is missing. This IS NOT a book for experienced musicians. Musicians with experience and a good musical background will find it very slow and plenty of already known information. Try this: take out all music theory paragraphs and keep only the cello pertinent ones. You will find that an important part of the book goes away. This IS a book for beginners with nothing else than a cello, enthusiasm and some time. They will find it rewarding, useful and instructive. The quality of the writing is good... 3/5 D. Aguero (France) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2010

Perfect book for beginners or those beginning again...

I don't write reviews often but I had to take the time to praise this book. I've been working with it now for four months (along with a teacher once a week). I played cello as a child but did not continue as a teen and adult. This book is truly the only comprehensive textbook for serious adult students. The author even recommends two etude books (you pick one or both up to you) to go along with her chapters. I'm very impressed at the way she introduces various concepts and how the pieces chosen are exactly what you need to master each concept. If you are picking up the cello as an adult this is the book you need. I recommend hiring yourself a good teacher too who will be happy to use the book with you. 5/5 N. Valentine "nicoleva" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews, March 28, 2008

As I mentioned in a short review of the other Kodaly cello disc from Naxos, this is spectacular music played by one of the finest living cellists. If you have the slightest interest in Kodaly or cello music in general both discs are absolute must buys. 5/5 Kevin Orth - See all my reviews, December 19, 2005

Beautiful recording of music I wasn't familiar with

    Lush, haunting melodies

I first heard Barry Phillips performing Shaker music in Santa Cruz on New Year's Eve. I went up to ask him about cds and Celtic music for cello, and my sister said, "I have his cd, and it's wonderful!" So I had to rush back to her place to hear it. I'm a cellist, and a fan of Celtic music, and it's such a treat to have those two passions combined on this recording. Besides cello, there are many other traditional instruments featured, such as bagpipe, wooden flute, and Celtic harp played by Barry's wife. I highly recommend this cd for fans of traditional Celtic and folk music, and also those eager to hear the rich voice of solo cello. 5/5 Silverdrake (Maryland, United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cello (Audio CD) I first heard Barry Phillips performing Shaker music in Santa Cruz on New Year's Eve. Barry Trivia

This brilliant CD is a collage of music from all over the world. When people pick up this album I think they may be expecting something with more of a Classical flare, but in fact Barry is known for his gifts as an interpreter of world music as well as an arranger/composer. Little Known Barry Facts: #1, He's a student of legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar, and played in Ravi's orchestra at the Concert for George. #2, Barry's first instrument was the drums, and he had a rock band at age ten. #3, His cello features a carving of a lion's head that looks uncannily similar to Teddy Rosevelt. #4, Barry has a degree in composition and has written chamber music inspired by 'Frog and Toad'. #5, He arranged a version of 'Purple Haze' for three cellos and performed it at a Celtic camp ceilidh. Anyway, the trivia could go on forever. I hope you enjoy this wonderful CD!!! 5/5 Jesse Autumn (Santa Cruz, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cello (Audio CD) This brilliant CD is a collage of music from all over the world. Carefully chosen melodies beautifully played

On this CD Barry Phillips has assembled a collection of compelling melodies from a whole range of traditions. The tunes are predominately Celtic, but there are also some lovely Shaker melodies and music from Sweden and Spain. The arrangements are wonderful - original combinations of acoustic instruments including zither, tanpura, oboe, cittern, fiddle and of course cello. It's not for strict traditionalists, but any fan of acoustic music would find this worth a listen. 5/5 0, February 7, 2002

I listed to a lot of classic cello music whilst painting this piece, as well as some Rasputina and Matson Jones, hehe. This is my own original acrylic painting.
