Guilhermina Suggia, cellist

Creator: Anita Mercier | Biography & Autobiography - 2008-09-24

The tone of the cello also sounded less constricted with the endpin. According to a 1900 article on cello technique, "it has been stated that the tail-pin first came into use on the advent of the first lady 'cellist" [ie, ...

About this book
Throughout the 1930s Guilhermina Suggia was one of the most respected musicians in Europe. She partnered on stage with many famous instrumentalists and conductors and completed numerous BBC broadcasts. Mercier's study of Suggia's letters and other writings reveal an intelligent, warm and generous character; an artist who was enormously dedicated, knowledgeable and self-disciplined. Suggia was one of the first women to make a career of playing the cello at a time when prejudice against women playing this traditionally 'masculine' instrument was still strong. A role model for many other musicians, she was herself a fearless pioneer.

The Art of Cello Playing

Creator: Louis Alexander Potter | 1996-01-01

Publisher: SUZUKI

About this book
The author's stated purpose in writing The Art of Cello Playing is 'to present a progressive sequence of commentary and material as a basis for acquiring a sound technical foundation and basic playing competence to prepare the player for exploring the rich solo, orchestral, and chamber music literature of the instrument.' To that end he has produced a comprehensive textbook and reference manual on beginning to advanced cello technique with emphasis on the vital beginning foundation. Louis Potter Jr., is particularly well qualified to make this contribution from his wide experience in teaching both classes and individuals at Michigan State University and at National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan.

NOT FOR ADULTS (unless you're kind of short, I guess)

Wow, this was a very disappointing purchase that is going back.If you are considering this endpin anchor, I would strongly suggest that before ordering it you measure from the back of the front chair leg that you intend to use to the pointy end of the endpin when it is extended to the position you prefer and are holding the cello in the playing position you prefer, and are sitting on the front edge of the chair (assuming that's where you sit when you play.) I extended the strap as far as it will go, and at 32", it is not far enough for me. I am a 5'7" woman and I hold my cello so that the peg for the C string is approximately level with my earlobe, or maybe the middle of my ear. This anchor is a couple of inches too short for me.I wondered how I could be the only person out of 5 reviews (4 others as of this writing) to have this problem, so I looked closely at the other reviewers' other reviews. One reviewer states that the anchor was for a child; another... 2/5 Mufkins (Sunny SoCal) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works well and will fit most chairs

This version of the Xeros End Pin Anchor is well made and is adjustable from 18.5 to 32 inches from the back of the "D" ring to the center of the pin socket. The pin anchor is made of rigid plastic with a non-slip rubber backing and the "D" ring is also made of plastic. The "D" ring is 2-1/4 inches in inside diameter, so is large enough to fit almost any chair leg or piano bench. The nylon web strap is very strong, does not stretch, and the device is very light weight.I own an older version of this anchor I've used for years and wanted an extra one. My "old" one is made with an "indestructible" steel "D" ring and the anchor block is made of cast aluminum. The old one weighs a few grams more but is MUCH stronger. The new one is probably strong enough for most users, but I could imagine the plastic ring breaking if abused. The old "all-metal" one could be used as an automobile tow strap if you ever wanted to do that. 4/5 Lotus-Seven (The mountains of Illinois) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Price, but Stinky

This endpin rest does the job great. It holds my cello endpin completely still when I am on carpet, wood, or linoleum. The value for this product cannot be beat! However, when I opened the package for the first time, I was blown back by how stinky the rubber was. Everyone in the room immediately complained. So I put it outside for a couple days and then brought it back inside and it was fine. 5/5 Mr BoPeep (Georgia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Inexpensive and sticky

Have bought 2 or 3 different endpin stops. Most of them are not sticky on wood floor. If an endpin stop slides on floor, why do we need it? This one stays on floor just fine. Would buy another one if I need to.One suggestion if you use it extensively on wood floor, you should clean its bottom periodically. Remove dust and hair. Always let its rubber exposed completely. 5/5 A worker (Northern California) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Perfect Fit

I love this xeros anchor endpin rest for cello because of these reasons:*it helps me to correct my cello position;*I can always adjust the endpin rest length to get to the correct cello position;*I don't have to worry about the endpin slipping out of its position while playing cello. That's specially true when the floor of stages is carpeted;*it forces me to use 4-legged chairs, which most of the times do not have cushions; and*it looks heavy duty.Thank you for having this product available! 5/5 Daniel Tsukamoto (Clinton Township, MI) - See all my reviews, March 3, 2010

    Endpin Rest for Cello

Started playing the cello again after 20 years and this was one of the first things I purchased with my new cello. It's very different than the round one I used to have as a kid! This one is adjustable and keeps the cello firmly in place...no slipping whatsoever because the loop end goes under your chair leg and keeps the endpin rest stationary. For the price, this is a great product. 5/5 T. M. Galligan (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews, July 31, 2010

    Too much in shipping

I paid 4x what the item was worth to have it shipped. It works great and protects my floor, but I'd have been better off getting one at the music store and paying half the amount of shipping in gas. 4/5 C. Talbott "kid's mom" - See all my reviews, December 17, 2010

I know, this is just an endpin tip, so how great could it be?This was my first time ordering from amazon, so I did not know what to expect. It came in a small box, and inside of that was the product in a tiny plastic bag, just like you would get it at the music store. Artino Rock Stop

Compliments:Stylish, functional piece of equipment. Chair strap helps tremendously on slippery auditorium floors. Finish is durable and beautiful. Tremendous value for the product. As for sound enhancement, I did not notice anything different whilst playing aside from my endpin not slipping away from me with the cello attached.Detriments:Tricky to set up at first, it wasn't obvious to me initially whether to use the black plastic dot or the pre-drilled hole. Rubber padding convenient isolator and slip-stopper; however, it is very unreliable on its own on slippery hardwood floors. Chair strap is removable although I highly recommend its use on every floor without carpeting.Side note:Although I have only played on this rock stop for a few months, it seems hardy enough to withstand years of use, even in college. 4/5 John Q. Nice piece.

It does what it's supposed to and looks a lot better than a piece of black plastic. I can't say I've noticed any difference in resonance with this vs a plain plastic one, but I like the look much better. It is hollow (so not a heavy endpin stop), but it doesn't feel cheap to me.
