About this book
In 1720, Antonio Stradivari crafted an exquisite work of art--a cello known as the Piatti. Over the next three centuries of its life, the Piatti cello left its birthplace of Cremona, Italy, and resided in Spain, Ireland, England, Italy, Germany, and the United States. In 1978, the Piatti became the musical soul mate of world-renowned cellist Carlos Prieto, with whom it has given concerts around the world. In this delightful book, Mr. Prieto recounts the adventurous life of his beloved "Cello Prieto," tracing its history through each of its previous owners from Stradivari in 1720 to himself. He then describes his noteworthy experiences of playing the Piatti cello, with which he has premiered some eighty compositions. In this part of their mutual story, Prieto gives a concise summary of his own remarkable career and his relationships with many illustrious personalities, including Igor Stravinsky, Dmitry Shostakovich, Pablo Casals, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriel García Márquez. A new epilogue, in which he describes recent concert tours in Moscow, Siberia, and China and briefer visits to South Korea, Taiwan, and Venezuela, as well as recent recitals with Yo-Yo Ma, brings the story up to 2009.To make the story of his cello complete, Mr. Prieto also provides a brief history of violin making and a succinct review of cello music from Stradivari to the present. He highlights the work of composers from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, for whose music he has long been an advocate and principal performer. This book includes a CD of fourteen recordings by Carlos Prieto, including works by J. S. Bach, Dmitry Shostakovich, Astor Piazzolla, and Eugenio Toussaint.

    Great case for students

I feel I can speak confidently about this case and my experience and hope it will help someone. My son started playing cello in 4th grade. I was nervous because we purchased a nice quality cello for him and wanted to make sure it was protected. Since he could not carry it on and off the bus everyday we arranged for him to keep the cello at school. I wanted a hard case that was light, had wheels, was inexpensive, and would really protect the instrument from other students if they kicked or hit the bag, intentional or not. I love the fact this case has a lock on it. Of course it is a cheap lock and could be picked, but it is a deterent. Anyways, we received the case and there are two wheels and "feet" to allow the case to stand up. One foot was missing and a replcement was never sent even though I contacted the seller. One of the handles came off that allowed you to roll the case easily with light wear. The fabric is easy to puncture in a school atmosphere, but the case has good padding... 4/5 Jessica A. Looks great, has all the right compartments but it is student grade. Within a month's use I had a broken strap and wheel. I suggest the fiberglass case if you need a more sturdy carrier. Travelite TL-20 Deluce cello case

This cello case is a very good value and light but sturdy. It holds the cello perfectly and was delivered in 3 days.Pros: Cost is excellent. I paid $122.00 with free shipping Sturdy and light, holds 2 bows, music Rosin etc... Very nice quality exteriorCons: Tips easily in the vertical position Bow storage seems "upside down" the tip goes up and the frog goes down making it difficult to remove in the vertical position. Bows need removal from the horizontal position so I remove the cello & bows laying the case down.I needed a case for my newest cello and I like this one so much, I purchased a second one for my other cello. If the case was more stable in the vertical position, I would have given it 5 stars. This case is an excellent value and I highly recommend it if you are on a budget. 4/5 D. Perfect Cello Case

This cello case came with my Cremona SC-175 cello which I purchased at Sam Ash last year. It is a wonderful case in all respects. You can wheel this case by either pushing or pulling it using the top handle. I also find it easy to lift the case vertically with my cello inside using the same handle. For carrying vertically, this case sports two side handles. If you prefer to carry this case as you would a violin, grab hold of the large handle on the side. My personal preference is to backpack this case with the back straps. The inside of the case is just as cool as the outside. Inside it is a large compartment for rosin and accessory storage. Two bow holders, and a well padded soft gray interior. The closure and locking setup on this case is very simple. It sports two zippers with separate zipper pulls which upon closing the case zip over the top and under the bottom edges of the case. The two zipper pulls can be hidden under the... 5/5 Edward Balen (Bradenton, Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: Travelite TL-20 Deluxe Case for Bowed Cello (Electronics) This cello case came with my Cremona SC-175 cello which I purchased at Sam Ash last year. Cheaper on Amazon!

Was offered this case at a music store but would have to wait for a "week". One week turned into four! Cancelled my order with them when I found the same case on Amazon for LESS THAN HALF of what store was charging! Purchased because they said it was "lighter" than their other hard cases. (My teacher's case is JUST as light, BUT she paid $2000-ish for her case). Her's is suitable for travel, etc. Mine was $120-ish... She was very surprised when I told her my cost. It is more than suitable for me.Glued interior is sloppy in a spot but for the price, I'm OK w/ it... :) 4/5 Sarah "SOS" (Swanton, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) You get what you paid for.

I got this case for my 12yo son, who strongly preferred another one that cost 4+ times the cost of this one. Since his Cello is an inexpensive (but good sounding) hand-me-down, I thought this was good enough. I did not want to buy a case that costs more than the Cello. I expected him to bang this case around a bit, since he has to walk 3/4 mile to school with it sometimes. His last case was a $75 cloth covered styrofoam "hard" case, that did not survive a whole year.Well, I was right, it has only been a couple of months, and he has managed to puncture a hole/crack at the bottom where the end pin sticks down. It was not 100% his fault, since the case was not a very well made one, but probably worth what we paid.FYI: When the case arrived, I immediately noticed one of the clasps did not latch. Also the foam padding above the endpin fell off (the glue did not stick well to the velvet). I did not try to return it for another one since the shipping cost was... 4/5 Joe (Gettysburg, PA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Pretty good buy - especially for the money!

When I bought this case I was sort of worried that it would be a piece of cra* - mostly because it's less than 10% the cost of some hard cases. But don't let the low price fool you - or rather, this case is worth its price, whereas I can't imagine what a 2000 dollar case could have inside that would make it worth the money - solid gold? that would scratch the varnish.SO - the only less-than-perfect aspects of this case are 1) it doesn't close exactly flush unless you sort of wrestle with it a bit - you have to learn which snaps to snap first, and 2) it's a bit heavier than the ultra light 7 pound cases. It's probably about 11 extra pounds. But, as someone who's constantly lugging my cello on the NYC subway and used to have panic attacks watching people swing their laptops into the neck and little kids lean against the bridge, I'm very happy with how safe it keeps my cello. The interior is nicely padded and provides a good suspension (which you can't tell by... 4/5 Caroline "Caroline" (Brooklyn, NY, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Cello case review

I was looking for a travel cello case, something that would protect my cello from the airline baggage people's rough handling and this case looked and is very reliable since I've heard the fiberglass ones can crack if handled roughly. This case is very suitable and does protect my cello the way i expected it to. Even looking at the picture it looks sturdier and a more durable material then it actually is. I expected the outside of it to be some sort of cemetric like material on the outside but it is plastic, but it is still a good case. but it is military grade and it durable. but also lighter then i thought it would be. 4/5 M. Sturdy, Durable Case

I have been looking for a great cello case on a low budget and I ended up sticking with this one after trying several others. This is a great hard case that protects the cello very well. The cello rests on foam padding above the plastic case so that it is never making contact with the case on the back of the cello or top. This SKB case opens and closes easily and is very sturdy when I stand it up. Most cello cases need you to hold them a second to get balanced, but I propped this up on a slope and it didn't even shift. I would trust this case with airline baggage check-in. It seems very durable and SKB has an unconditional lifetime guarantee on this case. If you break it, they will fix it or replace it at no cost to you. There is plenty of storage in this case as well. It holds two bows and in the two pockets I was able to fit in a mute, endpin rest, and two rosins. Though there is no pocket/pouch for a music book, I was able to lay my cello book down in the bottom of the... 5/5 Mr BoPeep (Georgia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Durable, good case, a few issues

With regards to the product itself, it's flawless. It's durable, fantastically well built, and lives up to the reputation SKB has for great cases. The only downsides are that it provides no thermal insulation like lined fiberglass cases do, but unless you live in a cold climate it isn't a problem in most weather. Also, the case is not watertight, so you will have to bag your cello if traveling in heavy rain. The reason I didn't give this five stars is because while it's one of the best cello cases I have ever laid eyes and hands on, there is one major flaw: it does not fit larger cellos. My cello fits in a standard fiberglass case, and it's on the larger side of full size cellos, and unfortunately the lower half of the cello is an eighth of an inch too tall. The plastic edge of the case has subtly worn away at the wood on the inside of the seam between front panel and rib, and while it's not an issue now, could prove to be one later. My recommendation is to purchase a... 4/5 Carlen Stillman - See all my reviews This review is from: SKB Cello 4/4 Roto Molded Shell (Electronics) With regards to the product itself, it's flawless. Great for the price but hard to carry

This cello case is very sturdy. The company that makes this case also makes hard band instrument cases and violin cases and this is the same type of material--not fiberglass, not carbon, but a sturdy plastic with a pebble finish. If it was hit I don't think it would dent inwards like a cheap fiberglass case but it may crack with a very hard hit. The case shuts very well-- not like some cheap fiberglass cases that you have to wiggle to get it to fit together correctly. It has a nice wide aluminum edge that fits together without gapping. It has five latches, one of which locks and the case comes with two keys. The inside is well padded. Our 100-year old cello fits very nicely but you should check your instrument's measurements before buying as I've heard of at least one wide cello that wouldn't fit. Tough Exterior, Cheap Interior

I was really hoping that this case was going to be nice. The exterior shell of this case is very hard and looks great. However, I had a buckle that did not work fasten properly when I got mine. The interior of the case is cheaply made. There are two bow holders, but they are nothing more than strips of velcro that have been stapled to the interior. Yes, you can see the staples. The compartment under the neck of the cello (where you would keep your rosin) is covered by a flimsy, plastic lid that could be easily broken off. Without the weight of the cello inside, the case will flip over since. So you can never prop it open and leave it without it flipping over. Lastly, the top lid is only secured by two cloth straps. Should those cloth straps fray, rip, or pulled away over time, then you have a two piece cello case. All in all, I found this disappointing quality for the price. It was cheaply thrown together by SKB and they should lower the price by about $100. 2/5 Mr BoPeep (Georgia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great case. Poor packaging.

It looks like a great case. It came with a broken wheel. Ordered a replacement which also came damaged. Amazon was great shipping out the replacement but I'm not willing to try a third time. 4/5 nana (minnesota) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good Quality, but Not as Slim As Photo

Pros:Very light weight, but strong. Good storage inside and music book pocket outside. Nice quality interior. Wheels are sturdy. Lots of handles and straps.Cons:Photo very misleading. This is a bulky case, not nearly as slim as the picture suggests. Back is almost twice as deep as in the ad, which makes since for a full-size cello. Also, case is black, not gray as the photo appears. Check out this link for actual appearance of case. All in all a good buy and good protection for your student's cello. 4/5 William Tay (My Appalachian Mt Studio, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) SKB Cases

My favorite cello case so far

For context, I've had a full hard case and a gig bag. The hard case had good protection, but the metal edging can be fragile, it was bulky, somewhat heavy, and not practical for everyday use. Mainly, it didn't hold many extras. This meant that rosin, tuner, metronome, etc. had to be carried separately. The gig bag was great, held all my odds and ends, and was lightweight. But, it didn't give much protection. And if you've ever had a couple pegs knocked loose, you know what a pain it can be.Enter the SKB "Soft" case. I am cheap by nature, and hesitant to buy anything instrument-related on the internet. However, the lack of case selection in my area encouraged me to shop on line. I e-mailed SKB and they were extremely helpful in answering all my questions. Finally, I ordered the soft case through Amazon. I first received the Deluxe case which, besides being more expensive, wasn't what I wanted. A quick return later (I had the replacement the day after UPS came to... 4/5 Richard C.
