About this book
The author's stated purpose in writing The Art of Cello Playing is 'to present a progressive sequence of commentary and material as a basis for acquiring a sound technical foundation and basic playing competence to prepare the player for exploring the rich solo, orchestral, and chamber music literature of the instrument.' To that end he has produced a comprehensive textbook and reference manual on beginning to advanced cello technique with emphasis on the vital beginning foundation. Louis Potter Jr., is particularly well qualified to make this contribution from his wide experience in teaching both classes and individuals at Michigan State University and at National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan.

About this book
Cello Playing for Music Lovers provides beginners and intermediate students with an authoritative, step-by-step guide to learning to play the cello. The book includes musical examples from folk, Broadway and classical traditions. It illustrates correct playing positions with twenty photos. Written from the student's viewpoint, it: teaches all the required skills, including reading music, using the bow effectively, analyzing musical structures, improvising, and playing by ear. The book starts from scratch with songs transcribed for beginners and advances gradually to 4th position Included are folk songs, hymns, Broadway standards like "Some Enchanted Evening," and classical selections like a Bach Prelude and Sarabande. Later sections explore some music theory and how to play in chamber music groups. Gifted cellist Erik Friedlander plays the 116 musical figures discussed in the book on the accompanying play along CD. The author, a Ph.D. and experienced teacher, presents this fascinating material in small, logical steps. As cellist Aaron Minsky said, "Your idea that the cello can be enjoyed on a simple level even within a few weeks of study is very true. . . This book will bring the joys of cello playing to many people who would not have believed it possible." Playing the cello will give any music lover unparalleled satisfaction. If you always wished you could do it "in your next life," do it now.

The baroque cello revival, an oral history

Creator: Paul R. Laird | Music - 2004-09-01

When held in an underhand position, it feels like a good light bow for a bass viol, but it seems too light to be an effective cello bow. Scholz's bow number 2 (Smithsonian 1993.0453.027) is of unknown provenance, but estimated to have ...

About this book
This resource considers the Baroque cello's revival as part of the period instrument movement from the viewpoints of over forty cellists from three generations and four luthiers who have worked on period cellos. What emerges is a nuanced and detailed picture of the cello in the past and present and the varied instruments now played under the label "Baroque cello." Period instruments played with appropriate techniques have become a major presence in classical music in recent decades. For the cello, which changed substantially between the end of the sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries, it is challenging to describe specific traits for certain time periods, let alone how it was played in those periods. By chronicling the searches of over forty top cellists in England, Europe, and North America, the author goes far in revealing the great variety of forms that exist. This is the first study in which the revival of a single period instrument has been considered in such qualified detail and will be of great interest to musicologists, luthiers, and anyone interested in string history.

Great product for a fantastic price! I have played cello for 15 years. My last brazil wood bow broke in a dissapoining moving accident and I have since had to use my backup fiber glass bow. Greate Carbon Graphite Bow!

My son's main bow needed a repair and would be out for 2 weeks and decided to purchase this bow instead of cheap loaner bow from the shop. You can tell this bow will last long time and highly reliable. Built with patented Carbon Graphite material, this bow feel very solid but not heavy. It just feels right. My son'e original bow is $450 bow. My son like the black color on this bow. He also said that bow's hair "sticks" better then his original bow. His cello teacher always corrects him to control the bow so that bow doesn't 'slide down' the strings. So, this 'sticking' is better for my son. As for the sound, it is not as ood as the more expensive bow but it is very close. This bow also have very good playability. My son also had Preston carbon-graphite bow but this Glasser X-series is much better over all.** This same bow, Glasser X-series model 4000x44, I paid "ONLY" $52.10 with free shipping from Amazon. I thought this was a mistake. I am not sure how Amazon's price... 5/5 K. Lee - See all my reviews, October 24, 2010

    My Impressions About This Bow

Currently, I am using a 4/4 cello, which came along with Crystalcello MC100 Full Size 4/4 Cello with Carrying Bag + Bow + Accessories package. That means any time this original bow brakes and/or is in repair, I can use the Palatino Brazilwood Cello Bow 4/4.As indicated under the product description, the octagon shape stick leaves the impression that it is stronger than my original bow, because the octagon stick radius is slightly larger than the circled-shaped one. The feel of this bow closely matches my large hand better than the original bow, because I do not have to tight-squeeze my hand to grab this octagon bow. Therefore, I felt very comfortable with the octagon bow. While bowing my cello, I could hear and feel a rounder tone with this octagon bow in comparison to the original bow, whose sound quality production is sometimes unsteady and pointy. Depending on how often I use the octagon-shaped bow, it may need frequent re-hairing, because the hair mesh at the tip does... 4/5 Daniel Tsukamoto (Clinton Township, MI) - See all my reviews, February 10, 2010

    Dusty, sticky, crappy rosin.

I wasn't very impressed with this rosin... The wooden holder has a habit of catching some hairs and breaking them... I honestly just ended up using this particular piece of rosin to cake up my pegs so they stick better... It's good for that much at least... All rosin, even good rosin is cheap, I'd recommend buying something better, and in a round cake. 2/5 William M. Mccarter - See all my reviews, December 2, 2009

good rosin (from beg intm adult student) BUT priced high

My suggestions to parents who have kids who play violin:1. as they get older, get them a good quality instrument. Rent one, don't buy one - the rentals are so much better quality than what you'd probably budget for. I am currently renting a better-quality instrument than I played as a teen - as a child I guess it doesn't matter, but as I got older, a better instrument would have been nice.2. get them a good quality rosin. As an adult I have come to appreciate spending alittle more money for things that are worth it - and this rosin is one of them...to a certain point. I got tis exact rosin for $10.86 and although that is about 10x more than I'd have ever expected to pay for rosin, I think the results are well-worth it. (although after I posted my raving review the price hovered at $16-$17 for it, which i think is HORRIBLE. I'm morally opposed to buying more of this rosin until the prices goes back down!!!!3. get them a couple private lessons from a teacher who... 5/5 Lexie Lo. If this is rosin, what the heck have I been using??

After reading the reviews on here I decided to upgrade my rosin since I had been using the good ole' amber brick since childhood. OMG, what have I been using? The bow just glides on the strings now! You can definitely tell the difference right away and I will never go back to the amber brick again. For me personally, I don't think it gives off as much dust as the amber rosin. At about 11 dollars, I'd say it is worth every penny. Show your violin you care! <3<3<3 5/5 E. Alarcon (Vancouver, BC) - See all my reviews, January 29, 2011

    Worth the price

As an amateur player, I figured expensive rosin was only for the pros, and I could get by with the cheap stuff. Then I thought to myself, a cake of rosin lasts me YEARS, so why not try the expensive stuff - I mean whats the real difference between $4 for 2 years or $11 for 2 years? The answer came - nice rosin and a nice sound for 400 times of playing (about the # of times I actually practice in a 2 year time frame). I have noticed much less dust than the cheap cakes that left dust all over my strings, fingerboard, and violin. It is so smooth, has no odor, and makes a great sound. I'm only playing for me, but that doesn't mean I don't want to sound good in my ears. I plan on using this for my children who are just now learning for the same reason. It's more expensive, but it lasts so long, that it's totally worth the price. 5/5 J. Turmel - See all my reviews, October 31, 2010

    Great service; good bow

Needed a second bow as a backup and for playing with my electric cello. This is a great carbon fiber bow. The advantage of a carbon fiber bow is that it is durable and won't warp/bend, which is exactly what I needed as a backup. The bow is relatively heavy, and is a good complement to my electric cello. The design is great. All black other than fitting. The seller (DZ) is also great. I ordered the wrong bow first and the seller was quick to help. 5/5 Clement Chau "amorelane" (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews, December 26, 2011

    Good product. Bad Shipping.

I really like the bow. The person I gifted it to is thrilled about it. But I have to warn that this item does not ship like other items I have bought on Amazon. I ordered it on Sunday and paid about $10 for 3-4 day shipping assuming it would only take till Wednesday to get to me since it was shipped out on Sunday. I was incredibly wrong. I was 5 minutes from leaving my apartment forever when someone from my office came running out to my car to give it to me. I was incredibly stressed due to this because I have never had a problem with shipping before. The horse hair appeared to have black smudges on it however D Z has explained that it is real horse hair and therefor has natural marks on it. That seems believable to me. D Z also offered to repay me the cost of shipping since it didn't arrive on time. Besides the shipping I really don't have any complaints. If you buy this product just don't buy it in a hurry. Excellent for the price

I am an adult beginner so my experience is limited to a total of four cello bows. Of the four, the D X Strad 700 is by far the highest quality and easiest to play. I no longer wonder if I need a better bow. My teacher couldn't believe the price and thought it was excellent.
