Soloist Sol Gabetta in perfect harmony with her Cello

  • May 04, 2010 from kinano(Kinan Faham)
kinano Sol Gabetta is considered one of the most renowned Cellists in the world today. Most of the music I found for her seems to be baroque & her mastery of the 1759 G. B. Guadagnini Cello she currently plays is profound. I would really like to see her live as she seems to have an energy so uplifting while playing!

    Great Recital - Transcriptions Notwithstanding

Yo Yo Ma seems to be popping out CD's faster than Imelda Marcos bought footwear, but, being Yo Yo Ma, these are not "cookie cutter" albums; each is individual and has a lot to say about the music explored. And this is no less true of his latest release, "Vivaldi's Cello", which really could have been called "Simply Baroque 3" as it features his collaborator on those two releases, baroque music master Ton Koopman (with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra). Like those previous albums, it contains pieces actually written for the cello as well as transcriptions of others originally written for other instruments or voice. This was done, as with the "Simply Baroque" duo, to attract a more "crossover" audience, but the transcriptions are expertly done and, as Koopman himself says, this kind of thing was very common in the baroque period. The three main items on the program are the famous g minor concerto for two cellos RV531 (in which... 5/5 Charles Richards (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews, March 30, 2004

    Sometimes the Cello Player Wins...

I am probably more a fan of Vivaldi than I am of the Cello. Attribute this to my being a wind player and most enamored of the toots and squeaks that are our personal domain. But Yo-Yo Ma transcends and musical favoritism. He has certainly lifted the cello out of its undeserved anonymity and brought it into the musical foreground. He has a tremendous control over his sonority and complete loyalty to the sense of his music. In other words, he is much more than another great cellist; he is also an eminent musician. Fifty albums, 15 Grammy awards and a taste that spans genres - that's genius. This quickly becomes obvious in the album at hand. Playing a 1712 Stradivarius specifically reconfigured as a baroque instrument he approaches a variety of Vivaldi's music, both written for the cello or newly transcribed for Ma. You get three cello Concerti (the G Minor for two cellos with Jonathan Manson, the B Flat Major, and the C Minor). All strong, performances that balance an... 5/5 Marc Ruby™ "The Noh Hare™" (Warren, MI USA) - See all my reviews, April 9, 2004

    Vivaldi Boycott Over.

I was shocked and excited this week when I saw an add for a Yo-Yo Ma album of Vivaldi's music. It's a great partnership- one of the greatest cellists of our times pairing up with one of the founding fathers of the cello as a solo vehicle. Being a Vivaldi fan, and also being aware of Ma's previous two baroque CDs, I was begining to think that he intended to boycott recording Vivaldi for his entire career. How can one record two baroque cello CD's without one piece by the the greatest contributer of baroque repitiore? Thankfully that ignorance is over. The CD is somewhat disapointing, however. Ma is an undisputed master of the modern cello, and he seems relatively at home with the baroque fitted instrument, but he does not have mastery over the baroque instrument. The lower pitch and darker, duller tone quality are expected and enjoyable parts of period practice, but Ma and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra have balance problems. Vivaldi's vivacious style contains much rapid figuration... 3/5 Andrew Judkins (Minnesota, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Vivaldi's Cello (Audio CD) I was shocked and excited this week when I saw an add for a Yo-Yo Ma album of Vivaldi's music. A wonderful voyage of musical and personal discovery

When Eric Siblin wandered into a classical musical recital one day in Toronto, he was unaware that the music he would hear would transform his life. On the program were the solo suites for cello by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Siblin, a onetime rock/pop music critic, is blown away by a kind of music he had never heard before, consciously, and might never have deliberately sought out. This book, the chronicle of series of musical and personal journeys of discovery revolving around the Bach cello suites, is the result. It immediately appealed to me because of my own love for the music -- although unlike Siblin, I'm not a musician of any kind and unlike him, 'classical' music has always been a part of my life. But I kept reading because of my own fascination with Siblin's tale and the way he has chosen to tell it: weaving together three separate strands of a narrative in much the same way that Bach might have woven together musical themes to produce the final work. The first of... 5/5 S. McGee (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2010

An enthusiastic and entertaining sermon from a fresh convert

A philosophy lecturer of mine once remarked that the recently converted make the most passionate fundamentalists. Eric Siblin, a professedly retired rock critic (I'm not sure how one "retires" from a pastime) makes a good example. Stumbling across a performance of Bach's Cello Suites some years ago, Siblin was captivated, converted, and has since leapt into the study and exploration of these narrowly (but profoundly) celebrated pieces with great gusto. (Interestingly, I could find none of Siblin's rock criticism online anywhere. I was curious to see how good it was.)Being no more familiar than Siblin was with the Cello Suites, I bought myself a recording () and had it on high rotation while I read. For fellow neophytes, then, these are pieces for an unaccompanied tenor instrument that itself usually (but not... 3/5 O. Buxton "Olly Buxton" (Highgate, UK) - See all my reviews, September 17, 2010

Superb Volume of Vivaldi Cello Concertos

This is Volume 3 in a set of four excellent discs of Vivaldi's fine Cello Concerti. All four of these CDs are very good indeed, but arguably this one is the best of the bunch. The soloist is Raphael Wallfisch, who consistently plays very well. The City of London Sinfonia led by Nicholas Kraemer, is a wonderful partner to the soloist. The Concerto in D minor (RV 407) is one of Vivaldi's most inspired works, performed quite nicely on this recording. Also, the cello is joined by bassoon for good effect in the Concerto in E minor (RV 409). The sound quality is absolutely first rate. The Penguin Guide enthusiastically recommends all four of these Cello Concerti volumes, but reserves their highest praise to this Volume 3, awarding it their coveted "Rosette". Without a doubt, you will not be disappointed in the slightest if you purchase this disc. Any lover of Vivaldi is sure to be satisfied, and the price is easy on the budget. Marvelous Vivaldi Music

I purchased this CD plus the other three that comprise the complete cello concerti of Vivaldi in this set produced by Naxos. The concerts themselves are magnificent and the sound quality, energy and clarity of the CD's are superb. I cannot recommend these CD's enough, especially if you like Baroque music and are already familiar with the music of Vivaldi. If you are not already familiar, these CD's will give you a beautiful introduction. 5/5 John from LA - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Baroque Music for Cello

One of my favorite recordings, and still one of the best baroque cello recordings, even though it was made back in 1969. The Boccherini sonata for cello and bass, played from a recently discovered manuscript, was a revelation at the time. The album was originally titled, "Italian Virtuoso Music for Cello" and indeed there is some fine virtuoso playing from Bylsma. A must-have for any fan of his. These are some of the most interesting baroque sonatas for cello. Great recorded sound, nice acoustic. 5/5 Paul - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The day I received this ring and opened it I wasn't quite sure whatto think of it or if I really liked it. I let it sit for awhile befor I actuallydecided to wear it. The first time I wore it I instantly took to it andthought it was a truly beautiful amber ring. The amber is a muchdarker green than pictured, (at least the one I received was) almostblack, but gorgeous nonetheless. When hit by light the colors changeto reveal a myriad of different green tones that are quite spectacular! This is a very large, very wearable ring. It will stand out whenever itis worn as it is extremelly different than the average and boring peicesof jewelry so common in todays market. I own the exact duplicate of thisring (bought from this same company) in the honey amber version andboth are just as incredible in their own unique way. A feast for the senses--and the spirit!

This film is a feast for the senses--and the spirit. The story is a fictionalized version of the apprenticeship of a famous viol player, Marais, in the 1600's. His teacher, the legendary Sainte Colombe is a man who makes a spiritual discipline of playing music to the exclusion of nearly all else. Sainte Colombe's talent is supposed to be so great that he can imitate any human sound. Yet he does not care about fame and fortune. He shuns the frivolity of the French court of Louis XIV and even refuses to go to court when commanded by the King who wishes to hear him play.Sainte Colombe fires his young disciple Marais despite his considerable talent. Colombe states in essence that Marais' astounding techinical expertise aside that there is no music in what he plays. Marais goes on to become court musician but still yearns to learn from the master. This incredible story was filmed with precision and artistry. Each scene looks looks like a renaissance painting... 5/5 Snowbrocade (Santa Barbara, CA) - See all my reviews, June 20, 2006

    Levels of loving

I first saw this movie during its theatrical run and found it so haunting that I have had to watch it again and again. It seems to me that, like many European movies, there is an overriding idea running behind the incidents of the story. In this case, the overriding idea is that love has different forms and levels. The plot, which is set primarily in the middle years of the 17th century in France (1640-1670), involves the interrelationship between the familiy of Monsieur de St. Colombe, a great, but reclusive virtuoso on the viola da gamba, his two daughters, and Marin Marais, St. Colombe's pupil who becomes a successful player and composer on the viola da gamba. The great contrast is between St.Colombe's intensely passionate interior life (his "vie passione") and Marais' superficial one. St.Colombe's intense love for music and grief for his dead wife excludes everything else, even his own daughters. Marais is unable to love anything or anyone deeply... 5/5 Margaret M. French Baroque Masterpiece

This haunting story is based on the historical relationship between Marain Marais and this teacher St Columbo, two of the most renown gambists of all time (the gamba is a stringed, fretted instrument, popular in the 1700's, which looks something like a cello). St. Columbo (his first name is unknown) is an extremely dark and complex person, "all passion and rage yet mute as a fish". When his beautiful young wife dies unexpectedly he retreats from the world, devoting his life to his instrument and his art. Although recognized as the finest gambist in France, he becomes a recluse, defying even the king's order to play at the royal court. What is the meaning of music? Is it to impress one's rivals? To entertain? For gold? No, says the master, none of these. And one who makes music is not necessarily a musician. The young Marais, who has become his student, struggles to fathom its meaning. . Great attention is paid to details and authenticity. The viewer is given... 5/5 0, July 29, 1999
