Decolteul este rotund, iar din dreptul bustului (decorat cu o broderie fină și interesantă) este bogat încrețită. Stradivari's Genius, Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection

Creator: Toby Faber | Music - 2012-05-09

In the pages of this book, Faber invites us to share the life, the passion, the intrigue, and the incomparable beauty of the world’s most marvelous stringed instruments. From the Hardcover edition.

About this book
“’Tis God gives skill, but not without men’s hands: He could not make Antonio Stradivari’s violins without Antonio.”–George EliotAntonio Stradivari (1644—1737) was a perfectionist whose single-minded pursuit of excellence changed the world of music. In the course of his long career in the northern Italian city of Cremona, he created more than a thousand stringed instruments; approximately six hundred survive. In this fascinating book, Toby Faber traces the rich, multilayered stories of six of these peerless instruments–five violins and a cello–and the one towering artist who brought them into being.Blending history, biography, meticulous detective work, and an abiding passion for music, Faber embarks on an absorbing journey as he follows some of the most prized instruments of all time. Mysteries and unanswered questions proliferate from the outset–starting with the enigma of Antonio Stradivari himself. What made this apparently unsophisticated craftsman so special? Why were his techniques not maintained by his successors? How is it that even two and a half centuries after his death, no one has succeeded in matching the purity, depth, and delicacy of a Stradivarius? In Faber’s illuminating narrative, each of the six fabled instruments becomes a character in its own right–a living entity cherished by artists, bought and sold by princes and plutocrats, coveted, collected, hidden, lost, copied, and occasionally played by a musician whose skill matches its maker’s.Here is the fabulous Viotti, named for the virtuoso who enchanted all Paris in the 1780s, only to fall foul of the French Revolution. Paganini supposedly made a pact with the devil to transform the art of the violin–and by the end of his life he owned eleven Strads. Then there’s the Davidov cello, fashioned in 1712 and lovingly handed down through a succession of celebrated artists until, in the 1980s, it passed into the capable hands of Yo-Yo Ma. From the salons of Vienna to the concert halls of New York, from the breakthroughs of Beethoven’s last quartets to the first phonographic recordings, Faber unfolds a narrative magnificent in its range and brilliant in its detail. “A great violin is alive,” said Yehudi Menuhin of his own Stradivarius. In the pages of this book, Faber invites us to share the life, the passion, the intrigue, and the incomparable beauty of the world’s most marvelous stringed instruments. From the Hardcover edition.

About this book
For over 200 years, Antonio Stradivari has been universally regarded as the greatest violin maker who ever lived, yet it is not widely known that he made virtually every kind of bowed- and plucked-string instrument popular in the Baroque period, including lutes, viols, mandolins, guitars, and harps. Stradivari provides a fascinating biography of this legendary maker, based on newly discovered material in church and civic archives, alongside technical descriptions and analyses of many of the maker's workshop materials preserved in the Museo Stradivariano in Cremona, particularly as they relate to extant and lost instruments, baroque stringing and instrument adjustment, and early performance practice. There are separate chapters for each type of instrument, allowing the reader to easily locate information. The book contains tables of measurements of Stradivari's forms and patterns, over 100 black and white photographs and drawings, and colour photographs of 16 of Stradivari's most important violins, violas, and cellos.

The baroque cello revival, an oral history

About this book
This resource considers the Baroque cello's revival as part of the period instrument movement from the viewpoints of over forty cellists from three generations and four luthiers who have worked on period cellos. What emerges is a nuanced and detailed picture of the cello in the past and present and the varied instruments now played under the label "Baroque cello." Period instruments played with appropriate techniques have become a major presence in classical music in recent decades. For the cello, which changed substantially between the end of the sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries, it is challenging to describe specific traits for certain time periods, let alone how it was played in those periods. By chronicling the searches of over forty top cellists in England, Europe, and North America, the author goes far in revealing the great variety of forms that exist. This is the first study in which the revival of a single period instrument has been considered in such qualified detail and will be of great interest to musicologists, luthiers, and anyone interested in string history.

The Art of the Luthier Revealed

If you are like me, you have never before heard of the word "luthier." Nicholas Delbanco defines the word as "one who makes and repairs bowed string instruments." It is an old, old word, and much of the craft of the luthier "feels nearly medieval in it hierarchy of apprentice, journeyman, laborer, master craftsman." Delbanco knows that we don't know the word, and we don't know the craft of the luthier, but after reading his book, _The Countess of Stanlein Restored: A History of the Countess of Stanlein Ex Paganini Stradivarius Cello of 1707_ (Verso), we can at least appreciate in small the stratospheric levels of expertise in the luthier's craft. The visit to this world is exhilarating.Delbanco tells of the history of the cello, one of a few dozen that Stradivari built. It eventually came down to Bernard Greenhouse, who has owned the cello for almost forty years. He says, "I've traveled the world with that instrument. It's been my companion for 40 years. It was my career, my... 5/5 R. Hardy "Rob Hardy" (Columbus, Mississippi USA) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2001

    close, but no cigar

It is easy to be excited by the promise of this little book. Its austere but stylish cover displays an old, rare, beautiful instrument. The instrument was created by a sublime craftsman. In recent years it has been played by another, and now it has been restored by a third. The cello has an intriguing name and the cover notes suggest a history to match. Alas, seduced readers will be left unfulfilled. The story is simpler than the promised romance. Ardent admiration is obvious in descriptions of the knowledge and skill of the craftsmen, but little of any depth is revealed. Even the illustrations disappoint. It's a beautiful package and will look well on any shelf. However what might, with more control, have been a delightful article in Vanity Fair is, instead, bloated, swollen and grandiose. 3/5 0, February 6, 2003

    A Legendary Performance

Salvatore Accardo is a dynamic violinist who specializes in both Italian Baroque and Paganini. His performance here is demonstrative on the range of his talents and his mastery of both the Italian Baroque and Romantic styles of violin. His performance on a Stradivarius for this piece simply adds to the resonance and clarity of his playing. The fact that he can play a Stradivarius so well is already the mark of his quality as a performer as many professional musicians often find themselves in slippery territory with this unique instrument. There is also another epic performance that is either equal to or surpasses this one and it is Pina Carmirelli's 1982 performance with I Musici for whom Acardo had also performed various works including 'The Four Seasons' before in the '70s as a soloist. I Musici also uses Stradivarius strings and are equally comparable if not better than the performers here. In either case, both performances are two of maybe no more than twelve epic... 5/5 Octavius (United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Vivaldi: Le Quattro Stagioni; Concerto per 3 Violini; Concerto per 4 Violini (Audio CD) Salvatore Accardo is a dynamic violinist who specializes in both Italian Baroque and Paganini. Shoppers note

Shoppers should note that Anner Bylsma has recorded the Bach Suites twice. The 2 volume set Sony #48047 was recorded in 1992, while Sony #61811 and #61812 are reissues of a 1979 recording. Both are outstanding. The later set, which I own, was recorded on a very large instrument, the "Stradivarius Servais," in a very resonant recording. Some critics prefer the performance on the earlier set, which has a rather dry sound. I have been waiting for it to be reissued so that I can obtain Volume 2. 5/5 David W. A must for Bach cello suite fans

To those of you who are chary of "historically informed" interpretations, you needn't be in this case. Though presumably Bylsma's approach is scholarly and "correct", there is nothing objective about his interpretation. It is sinewy, chocolately, dramatic, as winning and hearfelt an interpretation as any of the great performances on the modern cello by Cassals, Fournier, Rostropovich et al. Bylsma uses an actual period cello, not a reproduction, but manages to bring it alive and to coax out of it the sweetest sounds. Bylsma's tempi are faster than those familiar with modern interpretations might be prepared for, but his musicianship is so keen that the most precise phrasing remains intact and Bach's music never ends up sounding forced or rushed. Do your best to judge from the samples above, but I urge you to take a risk with this. 5/5 John Harrington (anywhere, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Bach: 6 Suites for Cello, BWV 1007-1012 (Audio CD) To those of you who are chary of "historically informed" interpretations, you needn't be in this case. As a baroque cello student...

As a student of baroque cello, studying under one of Bylsma's own students, I find these recordings inspiring. They are always fresh and interesting, with new information to be found. His version here is simply one of the many ways of playing the pieces, and I think that, compared with the Rostropovich, Casals, and Ma recordings (which I also own), his is the only one that shows their flexibility. Using a baroque bow and tuning down to A=415 helps, of course, as does using gut strings and studying the patterns of baroque dance.I met Mr Bylsma recently at a masterclass at my conservatory, and I found him intelligent, insightful, and passionate. These recordings show those exact qualities.I love the tone of both instruments, and I love the way he makes the pieces speak, perhaps even with the same rhetorical ideas that J.S. Bach himself would have been considering. Rhetoric was a huge part of composition in the 17th and 18th centuries; none of the "modern"... 5/5 Alexandra Roedder "expert in training" (between here and there) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2004
